I think if Valve announced HL3, people would believe them. Companies tend not to lie about that kind of thing.

In theory, all it would take would be a bout of official marketing for it to be legit. Though even then, we all remember the phoney "Guard Dog" Update that was faked by a rather talented chap, so...

...named Robin Walker, who works at a pretty popular games company named "Valve"...
Nah, I forgot the name of the kid. I'm pretty sure his name was on display in the footage I captured, though.
I'll let you guys know what I dig up when I recover the files from the hard drive later this weekend.
Unfortunately I was unable to find any footage of him mentioning Half-Life 3's development, I was only able to find an extremely small snippet of footage claiming his father worked for Valve.
I also logged onto my old tower to see if I backed up any information related to the encounter and I was able to find a screenshot of his Steam profile before it went dark.

"my dad works for valve"
"oh."
No emotion at all.

Can't wait for someone to be mean to him and he replies with "my dad works at valve and he'll ban you"

If that's real, that's a pretty lucky kid.

I found this group which mentions him as being a Valve employee, and this group which references "hobogenic" in Google:

However the only comments on this group are by "Finn", a Valve employee, and I think this might be him just with a new name if I understand google correctly? If not then I'm not sure why hobogenic doesn't show up but shows up on google.
[editline]yep[/editline]
It's him. Check the nicknames. "Hobogenic". He's still a Valve employee. And was VAC Banned. Interesting.
What's the F-Stop feature again? I totally forgot what it was.
People are acting like the zipline leak is something new, but it was found around 3 months ago and posted on reddit. Guess people just forgot.

You can't forget something you never knew, guy. Valve's never talked about how F-Stop worked.

I love how there's a bunch of p2 mods on moddb claiming having the mechanic, and when I called them out on their bullshit they claim they'll "figure it out" later in the process.
In the process of fucking what, isn't the mod/levels supposed to be designed around the mechanic?
F-Stop is exactly like Portal except the maps are fullbright.
That's the mechanic!
no actually f-stop's feature is to make you wonder why valve has not released a game in 3 years
I imagine F-Stop had something to do with light and camera angle. Maybe something like the portal 2 coop map where one of you has to stand in the room with the light and use your portals to give light to the other player?
I like to think F-Stop is a multiple discovery of this

On the sole basis that it would probably be cool enough to make gaben go "FUCK YEAH" and works with the real meaning of F-stop in photography.
Of course we may never know. Either way, I'm very much looking forward to that game.

Thanks. I think the only thing I remember is that it was pretty impressive to anyone at Valve who tried it out. Wasn't it mentioned in the Final Hours of Portal 2?
until marc replies to my email without a "i believe it is nothing" response, valve announces it in the next month, or an ARG pops up, i still refuse to believe this file(s) is hinting at hl3 anywhere in the near future. this happened before and there is no reason that this has a higher chance of hinting anything either.

yes. i believe it said f-stop was the "prototype" for portal 2.

This concept sounds pretty interesting and entertaining ! I would love to play a Portal like game with this mechanics.

There have been many leaks, so why did people assume that anyway? With that attitude, it isn't hard to understand the disappointment they feel each time HL3 fails to get announced post-rumor.

As far as I know Marc only works on story. What would he even know about a txt file from a Dota 2 update?

Game development is an organic process. It's not so static - you don't have the engine development, game designers, story writers and artists all in separate rooms with no communication, instead every department must communicate heavily to ensure a coherent game.
A piece of concept art can shift story development, a piece of story can shift gameplay development, a piece of gameplay can shift engine development, and the engine development can shift artistic direction.
It's not a closed system.

Might be because he's already annoyed from the huge influx of emails regarding it, and people thinking they're entitled for an answer.

what if he just responds with "cake"
I have an idea about how they would do that open-world/rpg Half-Life stuff that's been going around.
Maybe in one point of the game we are supposed to explore an open arctic area and visit some places.
Let's just say in that open world arctic area there is some tasks we should do such as:
1. A Combine weapons storage which Gordon and the rebels have to raid
2. A machine hidden in a cave that prevents the rebels from reaching their objective later in the story that Gordon must destroy.
3. Some kind of communications centre for the combine to call backup which Gordon must destroy
My thought is Gordon can explore the open arctic area and choose which task to do in any order, so he rides his vehicle down to where the mission is supposed to be, and when he reaches there the mission plays in a linear style like the rest of the series. Once we finish that mission, we get back into the open arctic area and we can choose another task. Maybe we can encounter numerous things/people in the open arctic area, such as a lost rebel in the snow asking for a ride to a near rebel station, a hidden suply cache, or some other things similar to the random encounters in GTA.
After all of the 3 tasks are done, the game goes back to proceed with the story in a linear style.

"Upon inspection I have concluded that this is in fact a text document."
