On the topic of zombies, I'm on the process of creating an hl2 mod where you're able to play as a combine modified headcrab. I would go into detail, but I haven't created a lot of story so far. The name is Half-Life 2: Genetic Variation.
Are you just coming up with ideas or do you actually have anything to show

Unfortunately, no, I do not have anything to show. I've worked on concepts for about a month, though. I will show something eventually.

GFL, unless you're working on CS:GO stuff, Source is basically dead, the last titles we'll see from it are going to be Portal 2 mods, and Infra.
I mean seriously, no static lit props with normalmaps, this is basic, people.

Okay well do you have any experience making stuff in source?
Like is this actualy going to be made?

Yes, I do, but I'm mostly a story writer, so I'm not too good with source. I've talked to my modeler and animator buddy and he said he'd gladly do what I previously said. As for coders, I have nothing. If it sounds like shit, thats fine. I'll actually start on the mod, hopefully after I get moved in and settled.

It's not just the game, but the new engine, assets & mod-tools will bring back the modding community.

Even "if" source is dead, source 2 mods probably won't exist for a quite some time. I mean, people have to learn something new, just like source 2 hammer. None of this, however, will stop me from what I've been writing. Source should go out with a bang.

I really wish I was there for the golden age of Source, around the start of the Orange Box era. I only got into it in like 2011 when things were starting to die down

In concept this could be fun. You're super vulnerable alone, but you can hop from enemy to enemy, forcing people to shoot their own soldiers while you make use of their faster movement speeds and ability to duck behind cover. Doubt anything will come of this though tbh.

I know personally that im waiting for Source 2 (And subsequently Half life 3) to start a project, My biggest problem with source is all the anachronistic bullshit you have to deal with. I really hope that Source 2 will get as good of a golden age as Source did.
EDIT
Then again to be fair I would say source has a bit of a resurgence with great looking mods on the way like Guard Duty, OBM, They Hunger Again, Nightmare House 2 Update, Tons of Portal projects, copious amounts of mods "Trying to recreate the feeling, story, and atmosphere of the HL2 Beta" and Opposing Force 2 (please don't die on me) just to name a few. It might not be fair to call the engine dead, However all of these mods have been in development for some time now and it might be a little late to start some thing now

Well, like I said earlier, you're a combine modified headcrab. Due to the combine fucking around with you, it causes an entirely new transformation called, the Overnome (Yeah, yeah, I mixed Overwatch and Gonome together. I couldn't find a better name.) The transformation is actually almost very instant and it further mutates the host.
I've been having an itch for play some.hl 1 and 2 mods. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Unfortunately Most of the really good half life 2 mods are dead at the moment due to steam pipe, However these Half Life mods should keep you entertained for a bit.

Man, I remember playing a bunch of HL2 mods back a bit and searching them up and seeing new releases pretty constantly. It wasn't quite the golden age but it was close to it and it was still really nice to try out so many different mods with their own ideas.

I don't think it will, most talent either create small free projects (Look at all the awesome maps on Planet Phillip) or get Unity/UE4 and create a commercial project. The modding boom turned into the Indie scene boom we're seeing.

I see your point, but the source engine has this charm about it that also seems to be transitioning over to source 2 (or what little we have seen of it) as well. I think the thing is that most game engines have pros and cons based of who was creating them and the source engine base always felt perfect in my opinion despite its other problems. If Source 2 can capture that same feeling, I believe it will gain a lot of traction. Plus There is zero royalty charges if you publish on steam.

HL1: They Hunger, Sven Co-op, Brutal Half-Life.
HL2: Minerva: Metastasis, Transmissions - Element 120.

Honestly from what I can tell a lot of the mod teams that moved to indie games either fell apart or just outright vanished from the face of the earth. I guess developing a mod in your free time for fun doesn't teach you much about running a for profit team depending on how you approach it.

For HL1, check out Sweet Half-life, Visitors,Rainfall Uplink demo, and Peaces like us.
USS Darkstar, Night at the Office, and Paranoia are all pretty good. There are a rather substantial amount of good HL1 mods.
Absolute Redemption, too. A fan sequel to Half-Life released only a year after the game.
Maybe the first singleplayer mod I ever played. It was included on the game disc, which was a really smart move by Valve. Being 9 or 10 back then I would have had no idea how to go online and find mods, or that mods were even a thing.
Instead Valve snared me in by bundling them with the games. And here I am, almost a decade and a half later and still caring about Half-Life mods.

I for one, have played all of these and can second them as recommendations.
There would be more active mods on Source if Valve would had care with not breaking the tools and more. I mean, by removing the Source SDK launcher, they broke the way the tools are launched, so you need to deal with scripts and bats to run it. And even with it, they become unstable (Hammer literally crashes randomly everytime you press a button/place an entity).
And don't get me started about the mess is the source code, and how nothing works as it should be.
*cough* steampipe *cough*
I remember waiting for the episodes of Minerva to come out, good times.
I find Valve very lazy when it comes to polishing games and fixing bugs. Left 4 Dead 2 is a prime example of laziness and rushed development.
If you're gonna play Minerva, I recommend you play Someplace Else too, Minerva is actually the sequel to it.

Redemption was so fucking awesome, that and Wanted are prob my most favourite HL1 mods.

That was the point, though? It was an experiment to see if they could make a full game in a year.
