i really fuckin love blue shift
it doesn't have shit on opposing force with all it's new weapons and fancy enemy types but blue shift worked with it's more grounded (relative to the original half-life) approach
something undeniably cool about playing as one of those security guards you saw so much of in the game
I first played HL2 all the way through on the xbox 360, because back then my PC wasn't good enough to play it at a comfortable framerate.
I played begining of HL2 and Episode 1(only first chapter or so) in CyberCafe about 6 times over and over, before actually getting computer in 07 and playing HL2 to end took me about 2 months ( I was consumed by HL2DM )
My dad got Half-Life bundled with a video card back in 1998 and I've been hooked ever since. I'll never forget when I first saw the zombie seizing at that computer monitor.

Post in SH, you'll get more views than a buzzfeed clickbait article
Oh boy, an ARG that involves any game but Half Life, so it must be Half Life 3!111
So I'm having an argument with a friend, and wondering if you guys can clear this up.
What time frame does chell leave aperture after portal 2 exactly.
Isnt it like 10,000 years and the combine are long gone? (Or the humans.)

It's supposed to be long after the events of HL2. Earth doesn't look combine controlled, but there isn't evidence of other people left either.
Though I've heard theories that Chell actually died (Greek mythology) or the field is still within aperture.

Oh yeah I forgot about that theory, that's what I used to believe.
And it actually holds up well with the Latin/mythology.
I believe that now
Thanks.
if it's long after the combine are gone, how come the borealis is still concealed withing aperture's depths?
if it's long after the combine are gone, how come the borealis is still concealed withing aperture's depths?
It isn't though? You can find the drydock if you search, but the actual Borealis is gone.

Looks pretty Borealis-less to me.
Who is cleaning the place from the dust and keeps electricity running? It's hundreds or thousands years we're talking about. [sp]and how come that potato didnt rot down into nothingess[/sp]
No?
Its not even confirmed it takes place after HL2. Its as vague as possible so it doesnt even have to touch the subject.
I mean i'll assume its after HL2 because of the state of the facility, but theres no set amount of years it was stated to be. Just that the place was in disarray and the counter thing was broke.

I would be totally okay with all this Portal 2 weirdness if it wasn't connected to HL2 universe, this underground place irratetes me espeically. It just doesn't make any sense no matter way how you look at it. It couldnt survive so well, it wouldn't be lit up, story-wise test are borderline insane and played with a straight face (MANTISMEN), you just start to question what the fuck Borealis was doing in there, why these 2 games are connected in what seems to be a pivotal plot point for episodes. Underground section of Portal 2 just pissed me off.
The reason they set portal 2 so far away from HL time was the regret of tying them together.
The reason they set portal 2 so far away from HL time was the regret of tying them together.
But then why would they put in a clear mention of Black Mesa and even a reference to the Borealis?
Well, Half-Life 1 is in-between the tone of Half-Life 2 and Portal 2 comedically; there are funny bits, but it's not laugh-out-loud hilarious by any means. Maybe Portal 2 is set in a parallel universe, going in the opposite direction to HL2's realism, by instead focussing on the slightly ludicrous aspects of the original games and amplifying them?
But then why would they put in a clear mention of Black Mesa and even a reference to the Borealis?
Because wink-wink? I mean, I said it a few pages ago already. But there's no reason to completely ditch references, and they're so minor in the grand scheme of things that it doesn't really matter - after all, Aperture Science's primary rival was Black Mesa, so you can't just scrub that out completely and act like it doesn't exist.
Also I almost figured Glados and her machines for the underground maintenance but then I remembered that it's a completely forgotten part of Aperture that Glados knew little about in the first place. Whacky bastards literally just kept building and building ontop of their old crap, makes me wonder why they drilled so damn deep into the earth to create the initial stuff in the first place.
But then why would they put in a clear mention of Black Mesa and even a reference to the Borealis?
Despite them wanting to loosen up the connections between Portal and Half Life people expected them to put at least one or two small references to it.

Aperture was built in a huge old disused salt mine, there's a newspaper clipping on a wall right at the beginning of the 50's section that talks about Johnson purchasing the mine from the state of Michigan.
What should I play with my buddy in Sven Coop? Somethibg that's not the original campaigns.
But then why would they put in a clear mention of Black Mesa and even a reference to the Borealis?
Probably damage control. They already wrote themselves in there, better roll with it and keep it minimal. They'd have to retcon so much to separate them it was probably better to just stick with it.

They must've mined that out miles deep to the point of hollowing out gigantic caverns, then. I can't even imagine what a high-level earthquake would do to Michigan after Aperture was through with it.
Christmas 2009, Oh boy do I remember the 1 am excitement of learning what Steam was and why I needed to register for it and that games can auto-update what I have to wait for hours on my 100kb connection?
Please.
Download HL2 updates with 56K connection, then you know what waiting is.
I remember hearing about Half-Life 2 and watching the trailers for Episode 2 and wondering what the big deal was.
So back then I pirated HL2 (boo!) and remember being blown away by the campaign.
It got me super hyped for Episode 2 and then TF2 and then Portal. Bought the Orange Box as soon as it was available.
Been on Steam ever since.
Valve just crappily taped them together, just like half life one and two storyline wise.
Gameplay and lore are cool though.
So you might heard about new TV show called "Colony" that has some similiarties with HL2 (Aliens occupation for resources, walls, drones, collaborators etc).
But then EP2 had this:

Feels familiar indeed

If you look at Half-Life 2 with an objective and abstract view, it's nothing but cliches and tropes from other futuristic dystopian science fiction.
All these people talking about playing the games as kids and when they first came out...
And I'm sitting over here with my first HL game being HL:S in 2014. :v:
name one thing that isn't a cliché. Hint: it's anything not thought of yet
seesaw puzzles
hl2 was an innovator in dystopian sci-fi seesaw puzzles

I should probably play portal 2 again, I swear I remembered borealis being there
