Half-Life and Portal series, general discussion (v6)

Since you found my post so funny I guess I should go into more detail about my points.
I'll start with the grenade and melee buttons. Although you can scroll to grenades fairly quickly, having just one button for instant throw seems much more comfortable. I also think it would make players use them more. The game has boxes with infinite supply of them yet you rarely need couple of them. The melee is less important to me and I could see it as the shove from L4D AKA non-lethal/very little damage to give you breathing space when swarmed by zombies (happens rarely but close encounters in general). Crowbar would remain Gordon's melee weapon. Thinking about it more though with the crowbar and gravity gun the melee button is probably unnecessary. I'm not trying to turn HL into FEAR.
Now the climbing. I'm not sure if it sounded like that but I don't want Gordon to become Spider-man. Think Crysis 2 without enhanced jumping or Dishonored. In my head I see it as replacing crouch-jumping with a more automated movement. I don't have issues with crouch-jumping but the animation when my character actually pulls himself up or climbs over obstacles allow me to immerse myself better. Just refer to Dishonored without using Blink or other powers.
Again, in the next HL game my main wish is graphics and physics worthy of 2015+. Everything else looks okay in my brain but it would definitely need testing.
If Half-Life 3 ever comes out, I hope we see Barney again, not seeing him in ep2 made me kinda worried.
His voice was in ep2 if it's any consolation
I missed that then, where was his voice?
Right after the Strider assault when everyone is congratulating you.
I still wonder why Valve didn't put aiming down sights in any of the HL games, and if we'll see it in HL3
I hope we see it in HL3. Their gameplay motto is dated, IMO. I don't think it'd be a wise decision to carry it over to future titles.
Half-Life 3 should also impose a two weapon limit and a lot of QTEs for a more cinematic expience.
[sp]That was sacasm, Half-Life is set in older shooter traditions and shouldn't try to be like modern FPS games[/sp]
(for the record I'm not saying Valve should add ironsights, I'm saying that it's perfectly possible for a game to have ironsights without also having weapon limits and quick-time events and feel like an old school shooter - I couldn't care less if they do ironsights)
I feel like Wolfenstein only has ironsights because it was also designed for consoles, instead of being made for PC only.
This is pretty evident in the fact that dual wielding is almost always the best option.
It doesn't matter why it has ironsights. No matter the reason, the game still has ironsights. It neither suffers nor benefits from it. If people want to use it, they can. If not, then it's not required and there's no penalty for not using it.
Minus the dual wielding, I think the gunplay in Wolfenstein TNO would work great in Half-Life. Hotkeys for melee and grenades, but both can still be used like other weapons by switching to them. Ironsights that are entirely optional, so you can use them if they make you comfortable. Even has secondary fire. Everyone wins.
Unless the FPS has realistic gun mechanics, such as actually firing projectiles with bullet drop rather than hitscan lazers, iron sights achieve nothing but blocking 40 percent of the player's screen with a shitty texture and obscuring the rest with an obstructive muzzle flash. A simple reticule is more accurate, more responsive and makes for smoother gameplay for "arcade" style shooters which HL definitely is besides its relatively gritty sci-fi style.
why can't half-life have dual wielding? i would love to see gordon storm into a room full of cp with akimbo smg's and slaughter the fuck out of them.

I wouldn't mind if ADS was default bound to Z or whatever key zoom is in HL2.
There's also an alternative for iron sight where it would just slow you down, zoom a little bit and give more accuracy.
For example AUG from CS
Quick question. Is the current steam version of Half-Life 1 only supposed to have 2 renderers, one of which crashes the game quite consistently when it is set to fullscreen (the software renderer)? Its like this in both the "regular" and "beta" versions of HL1 on steam.

Not that it was really good for anything, but what happened to Direct 3D?

Wolfenstein TNO felt kind of slow though, even if HL2 is probably the slowest pace HL game it was still faster paced than TNO. I'm actually interested in how Doom 4 handles gunplay, supposedly is more faithful and fast than Doom 3 was. Hopefully they show something on Doom 4 soon.

When they did the update to support Mac/Linux, they had to remove Direct3D since that's Windows only. Not sure if that came out around the same time as the Steampipe update.
Could they not have just kept it in the windows version only?
Im sorry for enacting Poes law with the Wolfenstein gag, but nah Half Life 2 is an encarnation of the Quake style of gameplay; adding Ironsights would only be beneficial as a creature comfort for the COD generation simular to how Searious Sam 3 handled them. However, judging by the lack of ironsights in CS:GO I would be surprized if they added them in Half Life, where the hardcore fanbase doesnt want them at all.
I say Steambox and Dota 2 tournament stuff.
They are presenting GLnext, now, considering it took them a year to port source to good old OpenGL I'm pretty sure the demo will be on the new engine (just like the physics demo from last year was in source 2).
Right after the Strider assault when everyone is congratulating you.
I think someone confirmed that that was a mistake :c
However, when coming back into White Forest after the Strider battle, he can be heard saying "Good job, Gordon", but is not among the Rebels cheering in the garage. The subtitle appears with Barney's midnight green subtitle color, and uses the Episode One subtitle file, as it cannot be found in the Episode Two file. Marc Laidlaw stated that it was an accident.[7]

May ask what physics demo? I don't keep up with gaming news at all so I didn't even know they published a demo of Source 2.

I did overreact but I just don't see the point
The guns in Half-Life already are accurate and looking down sights wouldn't really do anything other than take up the screen.
Could they not have just kept it in the windows version only?
Why do they still have Software mode?
Even on my shitty netbook I could run HL1 flawlessly with DirectX and OpenGL.

Well that sucks. Thanks for the info. I recently felt like running through HL1 again and when I was messing with the settings I noticed Direct 3D was missing. Also, my previous self apparently liked to play while using a great deal of custom content.

There's even some pretty neat new and redone sound effects to go with it all. Most of the new weapon models have custom sounds too.

But you see, that looks bad because the hd models look way too out of place compared to the blocky blurry geometry of the levels.

As far as I'm concerned that's entirely subjective. Besides, I have the WON version of HL1 installed if I want to do a purist run.

My first complete playthrough of Half-Life was on HL:S, with like 1.1 gb of most invasive HD skins, models, and textures gamebanana could produce
to this very day when I think of half-life thats the version that comes to my mind first, in it's full glory
half-life dreamcast is best half-life
Also change the crosshair/allow us to pick one.
I'll never forget my first experience with Half Life, the guard walked up to the tram and dropped dead. I'll never know how or why.

Personally, I like to believe he was hiding in a crate.
