Is there a way to force unlock the HL2 Update community commentary without playing through the whole game twice
map_commentary (mapname) or something like that.
Ok so dont kill me but ive never really played the Half-Life games. i want to now but i have some questions. For Half-Life 1, what good HD mods to you recommend? I mean i dont need them but why not i suppose. Samething goes for Half-life 2. Thanks!

For HL2, the recent Half-Life 2 Update mod released on steam is probably your best bet; it fixes all of the bugs Valve introduced when they moved HL2 over to orangebox.
imo most HL1 mods are utter crap. Your best bet is either just playing the way it is, or play Black Mesa: Source, but the last one doesn't include the last chapters yet.
Alrighty, i will play it with no mods. Thanks! Im guessing the Update doesnt work for EP1 and 2?
map_commentary (mapname) or something like that.
sv_unlockedchapters 99 works as well.
I can't understand why so many people don't know that half life and half life 2 are open source (the game code that is, not the engine).
So far, the only big problem I have with HL2: Update is that the fog/mist/smoke/whatever effect in Water Hazard and Ravenholm totally wrecks the framerate.
I can't understand why so many people don't know that half life and half life 2 are open source (the game code that is, not the engine).
Open source usually means they follow some sort of open source license (GPL, Apache, etc) Half Life 2 nor source fall under most all these models.

Some time ago my friend did TF2 pendants from anodized titanium and people liked them. So now he made some for Portal as well: Reddit post Blog post (There are some for TF2 and Fallout too)
The source code is still public and one can learn quite a few interesting things from digging into it.
Some of the directly game related code is, the maps and models still need to be decompiled; I would not say in almost any sense of the word, that Half Life or Source are open source projects. I think they're copyleft, but not open source. Quake 3 / ID Tech 3 is open source: https://github.com/id-Software/Quake-III-Arena [editline]29th March 2015[/editline]
open source just means the source is open
A very liberal interpretation of Open Source, not to mention there are a good number of pieces in Source still locked down; Source is a proprietary engine.
Decided to make run through Ravenholm a bit more challenging and went through whole chapter without killing any zombies. That was fun :v:
Hey, has anybody here managed to get this half life 1 hack to work? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5VTWEQdVhA I followed through with the advice in the video description but every time I load a game with the custom files installed, I'm booted back to the main menu. I've been told that it's something to do with missing files in the actual game directory. Any pointers?
So, I just came to a cafeteria/dining hall place inside the prison where I fought one of those big antlions, and I just noticed something. You can actually smash the roof support pillar things to pieces with just a few whacks from the crowbar :v: .
open source just means the source is open
Not according to the guys who created the term: http://opensource.org/osd
So as soon as I got HL2:Update, I did pretty much the same thing Xubs did, got some textures off of gamebanana and tried to combine them to suit me best. I didn't really like the colors in the VertThrasher's gravity gun, so I corrected the texture as I saw fit Then I used some of the old FakeFactory character textures and got something vanilla-like, yet still okayish looking, I'm mostly satisfied. Link Currently I'm also playing with Fakefactory's textures from the latest version of the mod, but on HL2:Update's maps, they're used on these screenshots I provided. I haven't played much, but it seems to look pretty good so far. I'd also like to get some of the more technical stuff Fakefactory did, like cooler looking particles, godrays, maybe a little bit of DoF; but it seems he uses modified DLLs to make that work, and I have no idea how to get that working. First I tried doing the whole thing backwards: replacing FF's folders like "maps", "scripts" and "scenes" - but that resulted in visible "TRIGGER" brushes and transparent walls; so I'll try to search around, maybe somebody had the same idea
Hard-Life 1
Man the marines sure loved him :v:
it's not like alyx and eli were rolling it around in filth before they gave it to gordon
I don't recall the scene 100% but wasn't Black Mesa East basically a dump?
it's a hydroplant. they were storing the gun in a special container thing on a wall

That Hard-Life video reminded me of one of the worst possible scenarios in a Half-Life game: Dying as soon as you quicksave
