"HOW NOT TO MAKE VIEWMODELS: VOLUME 1"
I always knew about the one handed thing, I am more of baffled at how what that thing that looks like a rectangular ejection port got turned into a parallelogram 50% of the way through texturing
it looks like wrapping paper, little did we know that the AR2 is actually made of paper-mache
Reminds me of those HL1 vehicle textures except gone horribly wrong.

Little did the rebels know that the combine were origami masters.
Little did the US know their origami skills were outmatched. They lost using the only thing they knew how to make out of paper.

Well we all know the weapon's a remnant of shit from the beta, it wouldn't surprise me if it was something mixed up at the last minute with as little effort as possible from an old model. The OICW NPC animations, the texture work and mangled state of the model in its derivation from the old beta flare gun, and basically being a stronger SMG as a left over from when the beta had too many weapons fulfilling the same role..
The reason the AR2's textures look so horribly messed up from the side is that it's texture is being projected from where the player's eyes would be on to the model. If you look at the AR2's texture, it isn't a side view of the gun like you would expect, but instead looks basically like a screenshot of the view model.

Also, the reason why the ar2 uses those cylinders with the red glowy bits as magazines is that originally the model for the ar2 was used for the i-rifle. In the i-rifle they were supposed to be individual rounds.
Secretly they lost the original files and pieced it together from screenshots.

The fuck
Who designs viewmodels like this
Honestly a lot of the gun design in the half life series isn't realistic, nor does a lot of it make much sense.
My personal favourite is how the SMG1 magically fires grenades even though it doesn't have a grenade launcher of any kind. Instead it just has two barrels of equal size.

Honestly it'd make more sense if at some point in the game, Freeman acquires a grenade launcher attachment that visibly changes the look of the weapon, like he takes off the foregrip and replaces it with a grenade launcher.

Where does the ammo even go?

For the longest time I thought it went in the grip in the front but actually its through the bottom of the trigger handle
you just don't see shit

imo that's a pretty neat idea they had. Instead of making most of the model + textures and fiddling around with the positions until it looked right, they painted how they wanted it to look to the player.

What's annoying is that this is one of those textures that has double resolution in the leak compared to retail. It's 1024x1024 in the leak and 512x512 in the final game.

doesnt work with moving light sources and loses the perspective illusion as soon as you move the model around

probably because the leak was before they had to worry about packaging the game

Still, this is VERY noticable with some models, like buggy.
EDIT: I've dug some more and it appears that Valve has halved the texture size on a lot of models.

Where does the ammo even go?
Not to mention Valve forgot a lot of stuff with the .357, namely shell ejection pre-EP2 and no speed reloader.

Everyone knows that Gorden throws the grenade which explains why it has such awful range.
I also despise the default firing sounds for the pistol and shotgun
whenever a sequel rolls around I pray that they give every gun a complete rework

When i was a fucking kid i noticed this immediately and it really pissed me off

I honestly think that Half Life 2's guns are some of the least satisfying weapons I've ever used in a game. Everything feels so plonky and boring. The sounds are so drab and dull, and the animations just plain suck. The pistol feels and sounds like an airsoft gun.
the leak is pretty much where i got mossmans higher res facemap
Someone should just compile a pack for HL2 containing HD leak textures for the models.

I actually have one put together somewhat. I'll try to get it together this week and release it. Interestingly enough, the weapon textures in both the 2003 leak and some in the original 2004 disk set have higher resolutions than current retail. Also the leak world model of the AR2 looks much nicer.

Wait, what? I have HL2 extracted from the original 5 CD release and all weapon textures have the same size as modern HL2.
Does anyone have suggestions for weapon model replacers ? I'm honestly real fuckin tired of the original nonsensical weapons and I kind of want some fresh air, especially with Update having just released.

I used to have a collection, but most I can't find anymore :c

I'd like to see an SMG1 that looks a lot more similar to the mp7 in csgo, except with a grenade launcher attachment at the bottom.
Well Their is this.

The only thing that I don't like about this gun is its funky stock.
Its also animated like shit...
You know what on second thought its just kinda crap.
I just love how Gordon pulls the pin off the grenade and puts it back in his pocket.
off topic: I can't help but notice how similar the headcrab in the pipe at the end of surface tension is to the fast zombie in the pipe right before nova prospekt. homage?

Of course.
Honestly the piss poor weapon selection in HL2 is the one reason why I don't bother going back to it. It really sad how much of an afterthought weapons were in this game, and even worse that they never bothered fixing it even with opportunities like Episode 1 and 2.
It's also why I've played more of SMOD Tactical than I've played Vanilla Half-Life 2. Kinda wish Tactical still worked.
Half-Life as a whole is a forgotten husk that's only asking for love and it's really disheartening.
