When L4D3 comes out, I really hope singleplayer isn't just playing Co-op with bots again
Huh, apparently, HL2 has auto crouch-jump.
Use ent_bbox command on player and switch to third person, you'll see that player's hull becomes crouched when you jump. This also explains why player model teleports up when you jump and why you can easily get on top of obstacles.
EDIT: Confirming, found it in the code. Lasts 510 ms which is the duration of the standard 21 units jump.

according to them though a storyboard has been finished and they have a "skeleton crew" working on it. They try to argue that means nothing will ever happen, I argue that means they are working on it (derp.)

Auto crouch jump only lasts for a short time so manual crouch jumping does make a difference when jumping long distances.

the thing about half-life 3 that worries me is that now valve are too "sure" of themselves. you can compare how portal 2 was presented (i'm not saying it was a bad game by any means, it was great) to how half-life 2 was presented. when they developed hl2 it seems to me they took risks and didn't really know what they were doing, but by the time portal 2 was made valve knew pretty much exactly how to approach it.
my point is that half-life 2 felt ambiguous yet very immersive and believable and portal 2 had its universe explicitly set in stone. ambiguity is the way to go when you're dealing with half-life. this is another reason why i stopped liking tf2. it feels to me when the game didn't have absolutely everything about it explained it had a more convincing atmosphere.
When people point to the rumour that the HL team has been downsized since 2009, that doesn't mean that's a bad thing for the franchise; the original version of HL1 that was terrible and subsequently entirely scrapped had its team wiped completely.
Less developers working on a project may mean it takes longer, but also has the effect of making it more of a passion project.
As Marc mentioned, they're probably figuring out a way to make HL3 as groundbreaking in terms of technology as 1 and 2 were; VR does provide a platform for that, but so do multiple other recently-developed new technologies in the game development sphere.
HL3 will probably resemble HL2 about as much as HL2 resembled HL1, and that kind of change is definitely going to upset some people. Valve are probably holding off until they can be sure that what they're doing will be popular even though it will be considerably different.

Seriously, I'd reinstall Portal and play it several more times if those get released; literally my only disappointment about the game was the portals weren't like in the trailer.

There was guy here, who were learning mapping through recreating Portal 1 beta/alpha. I think he nailed it pretty good.

It's Project Beta/Alpha. The portals [I]are[/I] from Valve, because a Valve employee gave them the content (I assume). There's some additional stuff, like a few textures and some legacy code and old map files.
Really just email Gabe and be [I]really[/I] abusive and bossy and he'll do whatever you want (don't actually do this).
