Does anyone know if valve used a sound library for the door sounds in HL1, and if so, which? I want to hear those big metal doors in glorious HD surround sound
This reminds me about how most of the sounds HL:Source got replaced by miserable hightech shit. Half-Life 1 had the best sound effects that made you feel you are in a heavy industrial area with big chunky machines all around. Even after the alien invasion and millitary reinforcements Black Mesa was still functioning non-stop. You could hear that parts of areas are really old and clunky. Oh and train and elevator sounds. That failing elevator in Blue-Shift had really appropiate sounds to add immersion. Add they utilised the cool reverbs. Soundscapes in Source are more powerful and give you a lot of freedom, but they didn't have as much impact in HL:S as the hardcoded effects in HL.
So, some guy on reddit made a simulation of what the next HL's announcement could look like :v:

Talking about Half Life 3 is so old now thats its almost painful to think about it actually coming out. Its going to go from hype, to skepticim, to begrudging "Oh its okay I guess, not as good as I thought it would be" after 4 years of fan speculation and 4 more of the "lol episode 3" kiddiewinks. If Valve ever does release HL3 anyone who mentions "Half Life 4" ironically should be unconditionally Steam Banned.

Pretty much spot-on. Except there would be some microphone noise clipping, because cheering would be so loud, it would broke recording equipment :v:

The best we can hope for experiencing this kind of excitement would be something like this:
Buy VR goggles.
Got to sleep with VR on your head.
Set the VR game to start when you normally wake up.
VR game is just you waking up and dressing up to go to E3 2018.
See some crappy game announcements.
You are kinda bored and you are still waiting for something interesting.
Gabe Newell walks on the stage.
Blabla steam, blabla value, blabla user created content.
Again not a single word about any new game from Valve.
Suddenly lights out.
You hear laughter and booing of the crowd around you.
Lights slowly turn on back again.
It looks slightly different.
Some orange logo is appearing on the screen.
"Time, Dr. Freeman? Is it really that time again?"
It's HL3 announcement.
Burst of people screaming and cheering.
Some people faint.
You cry out of excitement.
Tears fill up VR goggles spoiling the experience.
You take off the goggles and get out of the bed.
You cry again, but this time out of different reason.
It would've been funnier if it wasn't immediately mentioned to be a VR game.
On a sadder note, I'm concerned that if HL3 is actually announced, it will only be met with excitement but the few HL fans left, that or it's announcement will be a huge laughing stock since most people know HL3 as more of a joke.
It would've been funnier if it wasn't immediately mentioned to be a VR game.
It wasn't supposed to be funny, I wanted to make the most realistic HL3 announcement scenario.

So a lot of people have been asking me to re-up the wasteland_test.bsp map so here it is:

For those of you who don't know this test map was accidentally included in the HL2:EP1 Steampipe update. If you would like to download this version of the HL2:EP1 depot just use DepotDownloader

DepotDownloader.exe -app 380 -username <usernamehere> -password <passwordhere> -depot 380 -manifest 9031984278508656040

Interestingly enough using DepotDownloader you can download any previous version of any game provided you have the manifest id, which you can usually find on https://steamdb.info
I was carry on maintenance duties cleaning up scripts for a cooperative mod when, checking how to solve a new bug that made the Steampipe update only through scripts, I discovered what looks like a cut sequence which apparently no one has seen before (or at least not known at Combine Overwiki):
d2_prison_03
[t]http://i.imgur.com/qPvtYAX.png[/t]
[t]http://i.imgur.com/QdCOIDy.png[/t]
The tau_door_npc entity is actually the npc block brush blocking the door.
Apparently is related (or it could be directly related) to the Tau Cannon detachment scene. We have been always believed that, originally, a Vort would detach the weapon from the buggy and give it to us at the lighthouse. But these remains of outputs would actually indicate it could had happened at Nova Prospekt.
It makes sense when you think about it: The Combine gets our car to study it, then, at the prision, we save a vort that is fighting agaisnt a soldier, and, solving some sort of puzzle, it gives the weapon to us because our car (or whatever remains of it) is there. Of course, the only thing that remains are these mentions at the map, and the vort, well, is fried on these beams at the torture chair.
Pretty interesting, it would finally explain for once why Valve made that Combine Dropship carry our car.
BTW, the prison maps are full of old unused stuff like unused cell rooms that are sealed from entering and other.

It sucks overall that the Tau Cannon had to be cut from the second game proper and reduced to only a turret weapon on the Scout Car.
Hopefully the HL2 Enhancement team gets the right idea to add it back in somehow without breaking gameplay that much, Valve following suit with it's possible inclusion in 3.

Waitwaitwait, they are still alive?! I thought it died long ago.

Yep still alive, only inbetween the developers though and not the public.
Last heard they were waiting for Source 2 to finally release before anything else.

Oh snap, that's cool they haven't given up on their work. I really hope they are gonna be able to truly start making progress once Source 2 is out.

I don't know about the Tau script, but I know there was to be a Vortigaunt in a cell (http://i.imgur.com/tDjXyeE.png). There are also animations of Vortigaunt shooting the Tau Cannon.
David Speyrer: In the original Half-Life 2 there's a dead Vortigaunt in the prison who looks like he's been tortured to death. Well, in late Half-Life 2 development, he was alive. He was just sitting in his cell: you would let him out and he'd start running around fighting Antlions with you. Everyone thought it was really cool, but it was too late to bite off all that work; making him an ally, making him play the game alongside you. We bookmarked it as something we should be doing, as we will in Episode Two. We always thought the Vortigaunt would be a fruitful character to develop.

they did though?
Last heard they were waiting for Source 2 to finally release before anything else.
Yup, we're waiting for Source 2. The scope of the project is probably going to change, since we're going from an overhaul, to a complete remake in Source 2. The team also learned a lot that should make the development process much smoother next time.

All source games have dev commentary
*most

They did something much cooler. I wish every major Valve game had a book like that.

I remember Gabe saying in an interview around 2012 that they were working on developer commentary for Half-Life 2.

Thet's impressive. I remember trying to help when it was still starting out and there was still a lot of work to be done, and there was always some doubt that they could do it. It's super cool to see that it moved up from a pretty typical rag-tag graphics mod team to actually planning on a Source 2 port (I'm assuming something between HL:S and Black Mesa?)
Does anyone else think this sounds like something straight out of the episodes if it didn't have vocals?

Does waiting for Source 2 mean an actual release, or does it mean once an FPS gets ported? Cause apparently CSGO is up next for the Source 2 treatment.
Regarding HL3, even if it wasn't announced 5 years from now it's probably still be the game that everyone hopes for the most. The game currently has crazy anticipation and hype behind it, arguably the most hype for any game ever. Whenever it is announced, may it be months or years from now, shit is going to hit the fan, and I hope it's on a live conference so I can see Gabe with a big smile on his face and all the people going ballistic.

To clarify, most of the core devs are still in contact (Porky, Ken, Stiffy360, etc) but we haven't drafted project goals yet. So since we're going from a simple content overhaul, to a remake, it's going to be different process; it requires a lot of commitment, and a more structured team.
We're waiting for really anything we can use to come out for Source 2, I've looked very close at it and it's very promising; It just needs to be fully fledged, there's no source code / mod code out for it yet, it's only used in DotA 2 so far.

You are remaking everything, including level geometry? The mesh editing in Dota 2 Reborn's Hammer is pretty much functional, so you can get a good head start from starting from there. Even if you can't test the map as an FPS, it will help you guys to get the hang of the editor or even to make some early progress. Hell, your mappers and modelers can even work in Maya/3DS Max and import the .OBJ to Hammer and convert it to editable level mesh instantly. It's pretty fucking cool.
You are remaking everything, including level geometry?
I can only speak for what I think we'll do, as there hasn't been an official decision yet.
The levels will probably be imported, since the current Source 2 tools have the ability to do that, I don't know what yet for the models and materials, since they'd need to be batch decompiled and recompiled.
The other big issue is that we don't know what the best-practices are going to be for the engine, there's nothing in the way of optimization recommendations, etc, etc. Any work that was made for Dota 2 S2 will probably be a waste once a "full" version of the engine comes out.

maybe it'll be used as the soundtrack for half-life 3 :v:
It's disappointing that nobody has ever made a mod that lets you use Deathmatch Classic's weapons in HL1SP. I'd love to Super Nailgun, Rocket Launcher, and Lighting Gun my way through Black Mesa.

I think I'd rather see Quake brought up to goldsource. I know it sounds incredibly stupid considering how close they are, but I want to see it. But really, consider how similar some of the enemies already are.
