We don't know the cooldown of the abilities, so it may be stupidly long, too long to make it a viable skill to just camp out an item.
Not to mention that it doesn't guarantee you'll get the item or that someone won't just turbo bunnyhop into the item and out of it fast enough to hardly take a tick of damage.
I think it'd be safe to say that the cooldown would reset on death. But yeah, the AoE thing most likely does damage over time thing rather than instant chunk of damage, but it still seems really wonky to me to want to push for a traditional arena shooter and then throw in hero abilities. Especially ones that alter speed because it's safe to say that the slow guys are going to be shat upon to the point where their inclusion is pointless.
I very sincerely doubt it'll have a death reset, that'd make abilities insanely strong.
It's obviously there as a crutch to help players compete without getting eaten alive, and doesn't seem like they're strong enough to put actual skilled players out of balance. If you can pinpoint shoot a guy in the face with a railgun and instagib then, them going a bit faster or spitting acid won't change shit.
So it's just fairly pointless fluff they added for no real reason other than an attempt to try to cash in on both the nostalgia crowd and the recent trend of hero shooters? :v:
Wait and see if there's a classic mode before trashing it.
I know it makes you feel bang tidy jumping the gun like this but seriously, give them a chance.
We're getting classic Doom MP mode so it's hardly impossible for it to occur with Quake as well.
Do we know when we're getting the Doom classic mode? I thought it was supposed to be one of the first modes we'd be getting post-release.

Anybody notice with centered viewmodels, the altfire on the LG pretty much makes it look like Quake 1?

It's kinda hard to reinvent the wheel. The arena shooter formula is kinda, I dunno, great. Fast paced, tactical yet also favoring skill, there's not much you can do without slowing the game down. Character abilities add complexity and makes the playing field uneven. Really the most you can do is map design, different functioning weapons, or different movement mechanics, because the core concept is just rock solid.
I mean, how could you make Quake 3 Arena more fun? I think most fans just want a graphical update rather than tweaking the formula, maybe new maps or weapons. Really, you don't change something that's flawless just to shake things up because you'll just end up making it worse or the same with different paint. If anything it looks like the goal of Quake Champions is to take the arena shooter formula and expand the audience by adding hero abilities to entice players who are into class based/hero based FPS to give it a try. I don't think it will do well with the typical arena shooter crowd unless they actually make a classic mode but with DOOM's lack of a classic MP mode that makes me doubtful. However I think fans of TF2, Overwatch, MNC and other class/hero based FPS games might enjoy it.

I think the problem here is they're stretching too hard to mop up the largest audience possible. 'uh, its competitive we swear, but also there's x/y/z casual components'
which is the classic design by committee failure which just makes a confused game that isn't deep enough to hold people's interest but also can't really compete with overwatch and tf2 in the casual market. it reeks of a game that's just meant to sell preorders and doesn't intend to have any long lasting appeal
All of my expectations where utterly trashed when I found out the "New Quake" was going to be yet another arena shooter.
After the success Wolfenstien and Doom have had, I had expected a return to the original Quake, but no, arena shooter, in an era that already has plenty of multi-player shooters. Such a massive disappointment.
Gotta follow the AAA leader
It might not be horrible, but I'd be surprised if it was any better than Doom's multiplayer
Which y'know, is kinda fun, but it's not something you want to buy an entire game just for

Not that they ruled out making a new single player game, by the way, Tim Willits mentioned it.

I'm a little bit confused by this, I thought Quake WAS an Arena Shooter? Or am I being too literal?

No loadouts, you can carry all the weapons at once, you start moving insanely fast once you start bunny hopping.
Ability cooldown is about 40 to 50 seconds, seems like some characters can shorten the cooldown further, but it does not reset upon death. All the abilities showcased seem like they're balanced and designed to supplement your playstyle rather than override it.
Honestly looks pretty fun.

Well they better start working on it if they want Quake to live. By now it should be apparent that people enjoyed Quake for more than it's multiplayer, but also for it's single player. People like killing hordes of monsters, they like enemy variety. Having it be just a multiplayer arena shooter alienates a lot of people who wanted to just fight AI instead.

I could be wrong, but Quake 3's MP was the most popular of the games AFAIK.

Is there a map ID?
also does this look like an outdoor area

The success of TNO and Doom 4. The new Wolfenstein didn't have multiplayer and it was just fine, and Doom's single player was clearly the best part. Quake is different, as multiplayer is a huge component, but people want games that have more than that. You gotta admit, just fighting other people would be kinda boring if that's all you can do.
Single player campaigns are important in regards to those who want to experience game mechanics, but without the need to feel competitive. Multiplayer is important to the Quake franchise, but as it stands we don't really have much content to go on with Quake Champions.
I'm sure that as this game continues to be developed we'll find out more, but for right now I'm not seeing anything that interests me too much.

So this is where all the cheeto dust ends up after you throw the bag away.
I was going to go for something along the lines of "it's like a duststorm on Mars", rather appropriate considering where half the game takes place, but it's also appropriate to use the Wotsits powder analogy.
Were it not for the grim truth that it ends up under your fingernails, stuck in your beard (which is why I don't eat Wotsits too often), and all over the insides of one's keyboard. Assuming you don't wash your hands, in which case it just goes back into the water system.

I'm gonna be totally honest, I just lost almost any, if not all faith in Quake Champions.
The stuff like Ranger's teleporter didn't bother me that much, but the fact that each character has individual health, armor, and even has differing speed and air control is just pants on head retarded.
This isn't Quake. And I don't even mean that in the puritan "Muh classic Quake" fashion, I mean that in that it's literally the furthest you can get from Quake conceptually.
This kind of stuff works well in team FPS games like TF2 and Overwatch, but not in arena shooters where there will be modes like FFA and 1v1.
In FFA, certain players are almost guaranteed to be stomped by players who chose characters that are good counters to theirs, regardless of "skill" level.
In fact, I bet 1v1 isn't even going to fucking work in this game because if one player chooses a hard counter to the other player, it's pretty much a guaranteed win for them.

What you want =/= what the community wants. Because you're not interested in it does not mean that Quake "isn't going to live".
Whether you like it or not Quake is a series that's mostly known for its Multiplayer mode, not for its singleplayer stuff. The first game's MP was hugely influential, moreso than Doom's, it started entirely different games (Team Fortress comes to mind) and Quake 3 being a solely multiplayer game is still the most popular one. Even Quake Live, the admittedly inferior and less popular version sports one thousand players right now on Steam.
Literally all of your arguments regarding whether SP is important compared to MP are interchangeable. What's important is what the series is known for, and Quake is known for the Multiplayer. Wolfenstein was known for its singleplayer and therefore a SP-only game wasn't shocking, nor was it a bad decision.

Should probably wait to actually be able to play the game before claiming it'll be imbalanced and "not quake".
