Ok, I'm losing my mind and I need some help to figure out why exactly I hated DooM(4) so much to refund it. All I can figure out is enemies are non-threatening, weapons sound flat and weak, soundtrack is meh, the glory kills are meh, and there's little to no feedback on anything that happens in the game (taking damage, shooting, hitting something, picking up stuff, ect). And a super ultra minor disappointment was the lack of Vulkan patch yet (meaning my CPU forced me to run at the lowest settings (with compute shaders on) cause of the extreme OpenGL overhead AMD drivers have for some reason) But even though I can list those off, it feels like something else much bigger was so off-putting I refunded it an hour in. It's bothering me to the point of tearing my hair out!
Sounds like a mix of impatience and overthinking.
Honestly, now that I've finished the game and calmed down from the excitement, I feel like the soundtrack was one of the least interesting parts of the game. It just didn't sound like Doom. Doom is more 80's and 90's thrash and hard rock, not industrial metal. The coolest parts of the soundtrack were the parts when it covered the original soundtrack, and to me that just feels like it failed to stand up on it's own. There should have been more music that sounded like this: Instead of this: It isn't bad music, it just isn't Doom's music.
I thought we got past the whole "it isn't the REAL DOOM EXPERIENCE" argument when the game actually came out.

Beyond that I think one hour is a very short time to give a game (and I realize Steam gives a 2 hour window) its like, what could I or anyone possibly add? How could I help you figure out why you hate this game's guts? I love this game, I love it so much I played 40 hours on my 460gtx at 1024x768 minimum settings at mostly 20-30fps. But you know, I don't post about it, because its not very interesting and its not really a discussion. What is there to discuss here? I can only assume that you hate this game because of everything you said, along with I'd assume disliking it for not being a "good doom game" but you know its like, I can't make those judgement calls for you. I think what bums me out too is "non-threatening enemies" you played an hour, more than likely got into perhaps the second level at best and I have no clue what difficulty you played on. Nightmare mode? Oh yeah those imps will rip you up in one or two shots if you fuck up, now I think that is pretty intense and makes for combat that is a dance of death.

BFG Division however is hands down one of the most balls to the wall raw metal tracks in the game (with some classic Doom stuff thrown in to boot) so I honestly have no idea what you really want from it.
I thought we got past the whole "it isn't the REAL DOOM EXPERIENCE" argument when the game actually came out.
Not even close to what I said, try reading it again I said the music specifically doesn't sound right, everything else is fine, I just wish it was less industrial since Doom's soundtrack was never meant to emulate that genre
So, I been trying to play the latest doom. However the FPS is inconsistent to hell. Sometimes I'll boot it up to play and it runs fucking buttery smooth. 40FPS or so, other times the map and menus will lag to fuck but in-game is smooth, other times the menus run like ass and the in-game runs randomly between 10fps if I sit still it'll go back to like 30-40 and then change once again to 10 without me moving or touching anything and will keep doing so at its own leisure. any idea what the fuck this is about? I got like a 1/3 chance everytime I try and boot the game that it'll even run at a decent and consistent FPS.

What do you mean Doom was never meant to? Who made you or I the authority on that? Do you mean Doom 1 and 2? Of course, they had their own soundtracks consisting of rip offs of actual songs and a few ambient beats with some strangely soothing elevator jazz free style. But neither of us worked on Doom 2k16 and neither of us can say if it was "never meant to". I hate when people say that cause quite frankly, neither of us are an authority on the subject matter.

It had calmer tracks like Suspense, but for the most part it was based off stuff like Pantera or Slayer. Doom 2's soundtrack is prety different from that, and if Doom 2016's soundtrack had element's of Doom 2's creepier/less energetic vibes, I wouldn't mind, but my main point is that iD went for the wrong genre of music with Doom 2016, Industrial metal instead of older sounding thrash/hard rock (I'm bad with genres so I might have the exact names of the genres wrong, maybe that could be part of the confusion). Obviously I didn't expect them to rip off old rock bands, but they emulated a different style of music and I feel it was the wrong desicion. What we got in Doom 2016 was far from bad. It's all very well composed music that's energetic and exciting. Just to me, it doesn't sound like Doom's music. I don't mean to sound like I'm an authority on this at all, I'm just saying personally, they went for the wrong style.
I think the industrial style suited Doom 4's atmosphere pretty well.

Like I said I have no problem with you or your opinion and while I don't agree, I entirely see your logic. For me, its just very easy to separate this game from the ones before it, infact I think a good chunk of people here and on other old game forums would be pissed that I don't revere doom :pudge:
The thing is... ive been playing the original doom, and there isn't even a hint of metal in there. It's almost more jazzy
Doom music was never "super metal as fuck" like most people think. Most metal covers of it are really cringy. Except for Andrew Hulshult. This man is a fucking genius.
I think the change in musical style is welcome because of the change in artstyle. Doom 1's aesthetic is very vibrant and in-your-face, reflecting id's late 80s/early 90s pop culture influences and matching perfectly with the loud, fast, and aggressive sound of thrash metal. Doom 2016's aesthetic is much closer to dark sci-fi like Alien or Event Horizon, but still violent and actiony. A deeper, heavier, industrial/melodeath soundtrack is more suited to this kind of look in my opinion.

If you felt enemies weren't threatening then bump it up a difficulty level. I'd disagree with the feedback comment heavily though. Take damage = health bar goes down, minor shake and screen flash Pick up ammo/health = health or ammo goes up Shoot enemy = hit reaction based on type of enemy, where you hit, how much dmg you do AKA imps stun easily, hellknights not so much Unless you want the game to stop, flash big lights everywhere and have a booming voice describing in detail what you just did I'm not sure what more could be done to improve feedback.
Is there a damage arrow element in the world? I swear sometimes I'll get hit and some red blob flashes on the ground in that general direction.
One of my favorite tracks is the one that plays in the Foundry and there's still like, no rips of it anywhere. I love that funky guitar riff that kicks in half way through.

There's a lot thrash metal in D²²M's OST, but it's also full of bluesy, grungy shit. I mean, fuck, they took straight outta Alice in Chain's and midied it up: That being said, I'm not the best in tagging shit up. [editline]4th June 2016[/editline] Also, new FP's coming up, and I see there's already a subforum dedicated to Classic FPSes, do we even have enough people to make the split worth it?
Also, new FP's coming up, and I see there's already a subforum dedicated to Classic FPSes, do we even have enough people to make the split worth it?
Wouldn't be bad, within the classic fps forum we could divide up into dedicated threads, Doom thread, Quake thread, System Shock thread, Duke thread. I imagine that the Doom thread would be the only popular one though.

Does anyone use the Threat Detector? I score countless meaty kills with around-the-corner tracking shots.
Still the best.
The snap map puzzle challenges are kinda fun, nothing too challenging but just a nice break from the regular game
When I sad jazz... it's more the melodies really and the harmonies sometimes. for example the tri-tones in e1m1
I just wish it had more of a thrash or hard rock sound instead of industrial metal, personally.
See, I love the soundtrack, but I would have loved a thrash soundtrack even more. They should have gotten Andrew Hulshult imo. Still, that doesn't stop me from using my old music playlist.
