Too right. I'm not disappointed because of the abilities thing. I AM, however, disappointed that this is gonna be multiplayer only. I'm hungry for another hearty campaign akin to Doom 4 and Machinegames Wolfenstein, and I was briefly hopeful that Quake Champions would have at least some kind of singleplayer content. Hell at this point I'd settle for them doing a co-op campaign later on down the line, but for now I'll have to settle for whatever New Colossus is. (presumably it's an upcoming expansion to Wolf: TNO)
I doubt it is an expansion to TNO, it is probably a full blown sequel.
Even better, in that case.
also suggesting that characters are a natural evolution of the fps genre is just insulting
It kinda is now though? With all these character based FPS games in the last few years. [editline]17th June 2016[/editline]
Even better, in that case.
Hopefully on idTech 6. Doom 4 runs away better then TNO If it is still idTech 5, I hope they've figured out how to optimize it more.
It kinda is now though? With all these character based FPS games in the last few years.
evolution implies it's better, being popular doesn't make something good anyway I'm not saying the game will be shit; just that it's perfectly justified for people to be sceptical or annoyed about the questionable direction a beloved franchise is taking it will take a lot more than the words and promises they're putting out to convince me to look forward to the game
I still say wait until we have more information to make any sort of judgement. They'll probably show something at Quakecon, just like they'll probably show something for the new Wolfenstein there as well.
are they using 'its a moba' as a strawman to deflect actual criticisms of the character shooter shit? q3 was a competitive shooter, and characters are simply not a "competitive" feature. the hallmark of competitive shooters like quake, ut, cs is that everyone starts the match exactly the same. selecting a character kind of pulls some of the strategy away from the match and into the meta also suggesting that characters are a natural evolution of the fps genre is just insulting
Everyone should play fox in smash or ryu and street fighter so they are on the same level!!! Having characters doesn't make something not competitive. I love quake 3 (and pretty much any arena shooter) and quake live still exists and you can go play it. Why would they make the same game again??
Why would they make the same game again?
Because people keep mewling that its' what they want any time someone doesn't make a 1:1 QIIIA remake, even if the new UT is kinda quietly skating around? Least I certainly heard enough of that when Doom 4's MP wasn't a reskin of QIIIA.
Finally sat down and beat the first level on UV Nightmare. Weirdly the secret classic room was harder than most of the level, since it just warps in a bunch of possessed soldiers. Ended up dying in the next level to a possessed I didn't see mid-fight, but at least I got an actual death animation and not a "catch on fire, fall over" one. I'm mostly not interested in the new Quake because I'm not really interested in PVP anymore. Coop I'll do, but I don't have the time or patience for PVP as I've gotten older.
I had too much fun with this so i made it a console cheat
It kinda is now though? With all these character based FPS games in the last few years.
It's not an evolution imo, it's just currently fashionable after the brown torrent of drab shooters that plagued the genre previously. Not better or worse, just another style that's inevitably going to be run into the ground as every company tries to hop onto the bandwagon and misses the point of market leaders entirely.

Anyone found a fix for the bullshit DOOM engine problems? I'm sick of having to boot the game up and loading my save 8-9 times before it decides it wants to run at more than 10fps. (After which it stays at 40fps constantly for as long as I play till I turn it off and go to play it again another time.)
Firstly, what source port are you using?
Firstly, what source port are you using?
Uhhh. I meant the latest Doom. Sorry should have clarified. :v:
Things to note: -fake volumetric lighting -sprite based reflections -shader based water/nukage The volumetric lighting is really neat if applied well, but the reflections are horrid without a normalmap/bumpmap/specularmap. At this point he might be better off using a modern game engine.
So grungy steel floors shine like marble? What's the deal with bad modders being the most ambitious? It's kind of like those awful high-res sprite projects, but maybe not quite on that level. [editline].[/editline] Oh wow this is from Mark? As much as I dislike him and Brutal Doom I didn't think he would do something like that. [editline]..[/editline] Okay I'll admit those volumetric lights are actually pretty fucking cool.

[editline]..[/editline] Okay I'll admit those volumetric lights are actually pretty fucking cool.
I actually really like the visual stuff he did to DOOM 64. Makes the game really damn pretty. Just wish you could use those without, you know, the gameplay mod.
Mark has capability, his own interests and ego just tend to fuck everything up around it all.
Seems like an interesting idea. I wouldn't crap all over it considering it's just a preview. Even if it won't look good in the regular Doom levels, I think I've seen similar effects look really nice in other mapsets. The lighting definitely looks cool, the area before the exit room in particular looks great, the reflections, not so much.
Just played the demo myself. Some of the floors are ridiculously shiny. To the point where it no longer looks like floor and instead becomes a gateway to a parallel dimension. But I've gotta say, I fucking love the atmosphere it gives the outdoor areas, and really the map in general. I've always liked the misty, gloomy, almost rainy atmosphere of Phobos in the original games, and this really just adds onto it, giving a slight fog, making everything look as if it's coated in a light mist.
I wouldn't mind a redux of Doom 1 (and 2 to a degree) with more atmospheric lighting akin to PSX Doom, mixed with the fog and fake volumetric that Mark is doing, but those reflections would have to be for specific areas honestly. And the new level design he added to the hangar just.. isn't very good.
I think the reflections would thematically fit well in the lab levels, since they'd be more sterile and clean. When I think Hangar, Toxin Refinery etc I think run down, grungy, heavy industrial.
incase you people haven't followed ZDoom development: they added support for 'stacked states' i tried something with this new feature that's quad wielding right there 4 mouse buttons worth of guns, each firing independently this is the greatest thing
The notion of that reminds me of The Darkness 2, with the two guns and the two evil tentacles. Pretty cool.
that's quad wielding right there
Now go quad-wield a super shotgun.
Now go quad-wield a super shotgun.
Russian Overkill kinda did that already with quad quad-shotguns with quad damage

How do you know it has "lost its heart and soul?" I'm not saying it's going to be a great game but I'm also not saying its bad. People shouldn't shit all over it without even knowing what it actually is. I'm going to play the hell out of it no matter what it is.

Quake Champions looks and sounds like a cheap cash in on the character-based multiplayer trend
