This was going to be F2P?
I don't know, I want to buy it but at $100 for it later to be F2P.
What do I get from that? The invite but wtc.
Prospectors guide, early beta access, unique in-game content etc.
I'm excited regardless because even though I love homeworld, it was just as much the atmosphere of the game that drew me in as it was the 3D gameplay.
If they capture the atmosphere of the original game again, even if this was a typical RTS it could still be really good.
@Giolon With our investment, Homeworld Shipbreakers can be a proper commercial release. No need for F2P.
Oh my god please yes! This shit could turn really, really fucking fantastic (as if it wasn't already). I can so easily see the F2P breaking the entire feeling of it being a (now) legitimate Homeworld game.

see
things are changing in the development of this game
i don't see how that wasn't going to happen

This is really good, i'm curious though about the prospectors guide now since i pre-purcahsed it a month ago... I hope they won't remove it.

They won't, there's no way. They'll translate it into relevant stuff for sure.

Also, crossposting because its relevant and people seemed to like it when I posted it there.
I still can't get how Jack is apparently a well written character, I just can't see it. He's well acted, I'll say that, but he was never really threatening or deep or anything, he was just an asshole who couldn't stop calling me. That and most dialogue, especially fucking claptrap, made me cringe. I hardly ever actually cringe.
On Shipbreakers, though, one of the coolest things they could do, in my opinion, is broaden the whole finding the first core.
Hmmm... basic tutorial mission taking place pre-HW1 involving the investigation of a certain mysterious ship buried in the sands?
"Oh my God... We have to tell the other Kiith about this..." -fade to black- "Mission Complete"
[editline]3rd September 2013[/editline]
I mean, it doesn't even have to be a combat or construction tutorial yet. Just a simple control and interface explanation tutorial. You're given the two dune-riders seen in the cutscene, you're told to investigate something out in the desert that was reported to be there, and you move out to investigate. It explains basic movement, interface, and command functions and through that you come across the Khar-Toba, game mechanic related basic shipbreaking stuff happens so they can get inside, and the mission ends with the above dialogue line and then a cutscene explaining what it is.
But, they should start the mission with no explanation or notice of what it is. Let the players discover that the thing they're investigating is a ship and let them realize that its the fucking Khar-Toba and then they'll realize what they just found and where they are and what they just set in motion.
[editline]3rd September 2013[/editline]
And then fast forward to LM-27 or whatevs and present day whenevers and shipbreaking corporations and other combat and construction tutorials.
Except instead of ending the tutorial there, the next tutorial could cover resource gathering and more in depth shipbreaking so they can extract the core and the guidestone and whatever else for study. Combat tutorials should be done in present day as then its more relevant and it'd let players get more familiar with their combat tools instead of making them learn new units.
Plus, shoehorning in combat mechanics in the flashback would be annoying. Who was there to shoot at back then?
Got this in my mail:
[I]"Salutations Prospectors!
As always, thanks again for your continued support and interest in HARDWARE: Shipbreakers. As you may have already heard, HARDWARE: Shipbreakers is now officially a HOMEWORLD game!
HOMEWORLD: Shipbreakers has become the first new game in the Homeworld franchise in over 10 years. As some of the original creators, we couldn’t be happier!
Shipbreakers will feature the same great gameplay and art that we were building for HARDWARE, only now it will be secured inside one of the most recognized and respected franchises in video games. The game will be released as a commercial product, not a free-to-play game. Additional details such as features, story and release date will follow in due course.
In light of this change and the obvious implications it has for the title, our plans to produce a Prospector’s Guide have been shelved for now. However, by signing up as Prospectors and VIP’s for HARDWARE we feel like you joined an exclusive ‘club’ with BBI. At this early stage we have not yet determined what membership in this club will include but this much is known:
1) Your Prospectors Guide and/or VIP package purchase will be fully refunded within the next 1-2 weeks.
2) You will receive a free copy of HOMEWORLD: Shipbreakers when it is released.
3) You will be notified if and when any additional benefits or products will be available for Prospector Guide & VIP buyers like yourself.
While we will miss the opportunity of making an awesome Prospector’s Guide for HARDWARE, we can’t wait to build Shipbreakers as a Homeworld game. Stay tuned for more info!
Yours most sincerely,
Rob Cunningham

Thanks for your support!

These are exellent news considering how quiet BBI have been for weeks.
Some (minor) new info on the site:
[I]
The exciting return of original content in the Homeworld universe.
Made by the original creators of Homeworld.
The first new Homeworld game in 10 years.
An engaging RTS experience.
A prequel to the events of the original Homeworld game.

Start the hype.

HHHHOOOOOHHHHMAN HERE WE GO.

Or the entire story revolves around collecting resources for building the Mothership, that did take a good number of decades.

Maybe, but I don't think they had hyperdrives until the Mothership itself was actually built.

I am pretty sure they found the first hyperdrive from that colony ship that had crashed into the desert, which you can btw see in the first shipbreakers trailer or a crashed ship very similar to it.
edit
However everything shown so far makes it hard for me to believe that this is going to be a prequel for the first game, homeworld 2 much more likely unless they change everything revealed so far, which i guess is possible since they have the rights to the IP.
So, bump-time.
Devs became a bit more active and posted stuff on Facebook.
Sadly there was little, if any, new information about the game although the linked blog got some goodies here and there.

Is this still becoming an F2P or did they completely throw that out of the window already?
Is this still becoming an F2P or did they completely throw that out of the window already?
Yeah they ditched it once they got Gearbox's blessing.

As Electrocuter said, they changed it into a full game, a prequel to Homeworld.
If you look at the bottom of the last page you can read the mail i received about it.
(Since i bought the, now removed, Prospectors Guide.)
[editline]14th December 2013[/editline]
Also, i really fucking hope that some of the ~mysterious~ ships that we'll be able to salvage will be alien. (Higaaran or whatever they're called, haven't played Homeowrld that much...)
Chances are most, if not all of them will be. The discovery of the Khar-Toba marked the [sp]re[/sp]discovery of the guidestone and FTL travel. Up until that point, the Kushan (protagonist species) were about as technologically advanced as we are.
That is, if I'm correct in assuming that planet LM-27 was changed to Kharak. If it wasn't, then Shipbreakers is either a sequel to Homeworld 2 or a super-mega-hyper prequel, taking place at least 4000 years before Homeworld 1.
I read a lot on Homeworld lore.

a full game? not F2P?
my screen is covered in jizz, my hype levels are off the charts. I had so much fun with the first two homeworld games and still enjoy the occasional skirmish match in homeworld 2.

Are you forgetting Cataclysm?

From their Facebook page.
AAAAAAA HOMEWORLD HD!!!
So Blackbird posted this on their Facebook:

In the survey there was alot of interesting information:

LET THE HYPE BEGIN! TELL YOUR FRIENDS!!!

The HD remakes have been known about ever since Gearbox bought the license from THQ last year. The good news now is that it looks like many of the original artists are involved.
With BBI at the help, its quality is practically assured.
Bump: Name has been officially changed into Homeworld: Desert of Kharak.
Looking for a good article ATM...
