Huh, I do not remember that at all. Sorry!
Progress!

That's a good start! Are you planning on using leak and/or custom textures/models or HL2 assets only?
Thanks! Yes, I'm planning to use leak textures, especially stuff like signs and decals. I'd like to use models, but I don't know how to port beta models so I'd have to be completely reliant on other people's stuff.
I like the trainstation so far. Looks like a good combination of the most recent e3_terminal version and some of the older c17 maps with the stone textures.
On the yellowish building with the combine lookout tower, I'm not sure if that glass storefront window texture matches the rest of the building. It kinda stands out. EDIT: By that I mean, it looks fine when it's on that little side shack with the Souvenir sign, but built into the building on the street side it looks out of place.
Also, be careful about using too many poster decals. It's surprising how much an area can be improved by leaving some walls blank.
There was something about GabeNet not working if Windows was in
P. S. Downloaded a MP fix from hl2-beta.ru, gonna try it. Is leak MP in general similar to HL1 Alpha MP, or even worse than that?
I have no idea what their patch is like, but if it's anything like GabeN HL2 multi, expect a fucking mess.
Just asked ScarT (ProZak) about GabeNet not working in Russia, here's what he remembers:
<ScarT> I think it was because the main ISP in Russia did some shit that GabeNet couldn't get past
Which makes sense, because I really don't remember us having anything against Russia itself. A few members of the community from there, maybe, but looking back and knowing what I know about our team it doesn't make sense to me that we would have done that on purpose. Any perception of us as "fascists" behind the iron curtain is probably just the "Team GabeN are Nazis" narrative spinning out of control.
I've been thinking about this for over a month, but why is the v4 HGrunt model called HSarge? Even though there's already a Human Sergeant.
Sorry to interrupt your nice chatter, but can anyone tell me why The Chaos Engine game reminds me about HL2 Leak?:v:
Haha! I just got banned in Schwarzen Nebel VK group following one of my posts here. 'Due to complaints from community members'. Of course the comments there are now filled with hatred and despise towards Missing Info, about them 'dwelling in the basement and seldom trying to accuse others while they abandoned their own project'. Looks like Nervenholle-Team couldn't take the butthurt when they realised the truth about their existance.
Привет, Рандом Рандомов! Надеюсь, когда-нибудь ты осознаешь, что всё, что говорю я и разрабы MI - объективная правда.
Oh and it took them quite a while to figure out who I am. Even though my name was clearly written in my ModDB profile. I suppose that was too much of the English language for them to comprehend.

I still have a copy of the GabeNet client. I mean, they probably thought you were Nazis due to the fact that your stuff had it written all over it. :v:

Is there any way to fix or at least replicate WorldVertexAlpha shader in Source 2013? In the leak, it works similar to WorldVertexTransition except it transitions to invisible:
[T]http://i.imgur.com/PwwUAoc.jpg[/T]
But it's broken in the current engine, the entire face is opaque:
[T]http://i.imgur.com/0qkkteZ.jpg[/T]
And it's completely invisible in Hammer.
It might work in earlier Source versions, I haven't tested that.
Maybe you could make a regular WorldVertexTransition with a transparent texture? I dunno.
Genuinely curious, what would you do with a displacement that blends into alpha? I don't see how that could really be useful.
Maybe you could make a regular WorldVertexTransition with a transparent texture? I dunno.
Nope, tried that, $translucent doesn't seem to work with WorldVertexTransition.

It's used in e3_depot and e3_seafloor to make visually smooth transitions between main area and 3D skybox (the above screenshots have 3D skybox disabled to avoid confusion):
[T]http://i.imgur.com/8QXUVN7.jpg[/T]
Could see it used like a more free-form version of the 4-way/Multiblend textures DotA 2/CSGO have now, maybe.
[editline]Oh hi.[/editline]
Or that, that works too.

Also used in Submarine maps to make sand textures transition onto metal surfaces and create natural looking sand heaps!

A lot of this was in response to being called Nazis anyway. People just don't understand a joke when they see it.

For the record (to everyone reading this, as cvox knows this already) the reason they hate us is because we called them out on decompiling the entirety of MI's Hyperborea chapter, including all the props and brushes we made from scratch, and even the combine soldier on the radio in the bridge that i recorded myself. We asked them to remove our stuff and the creator threw a shit fit and deleted the whole mod from moddb.

They even stole some stuff they couldn't use (weapon models in particular, Build 2046 had retail weapons 'cause it runs with FFCM code base). Then they got very angry about this being pointed out. I suppose they believe in this 'collective effort' model when everything the community makes belongs to everyone. No one told them this isn't so.
Now, it is important to point out that so far the rebuilt Build 2046 (called Scwarzen Nebel now) doesn't look like it contains the stolen assets anymore. I'm still doubtful about the OICW model, though. Then again, this doesn't change the fact that it looks absurdic and to have your content used in it is simply insulting. This isn't a socialistic commune people. Please stop stealing everything under the sincere belief that it doesn't matter or is allowed if what you steal is less significant.
They also implement a common argument like "Missing Info got lazy and abandoned their project, so why try and ruin our mod". Well if someone cared to pay attention to the larger part of the community they'd find out this really isn't so, thus the argument is invalid (not like it would ever be valid because stealing is inherintly bad).
I am certain that it would benefit their project if they tried and listened to some criticism, and learned how to read basic English. Instead they prefer to shut off, ban people, and make horrible maps. Oh well.

P. S. Fun fact: when they were told about the stolen chapter they replaced the maps and STILL managed to use levels from MI! I wonder what's gonna happen when Schwarzen Nebel is released. I bet it'll still have something in it because these people seem to be unable to learn that the best way to stay out of trouble, is to make everything yourself.
[editline]12th September 2015[/editline]
They also now call me a 'hater' but the entire thing drove me into a dilemma. I maintain a position that everyone is entitled to one's opinion and so on. But Build 2046/Schwarzen Nebel just looks SO wrong, makes so little sense and makes me cringe so hard that I cannot help myself but wonder if there is such a thing as a 'wrong' opinion or a 'wrong' interest. Clearly, that alone makes me a hater! Possibly even a Nazi.
Yeah they used brushes that they decompiled from my Hyperborea even after the fact, specifically the side balconies i added to the bridge to set apart MI from all other mods, and defended it by saying "these are prefabs". How dumb can one get?

Clearly you have it all wrong. They actually took on the brave quest to ENHANCE and IMPROVE the existing maps by placing props from STALKER and Metro and texturing the ship with concrete textures. Your lazy Nazi mind cannot comprehend it so you resort to nonsensical accusations! You stole it from Valve, you have no claim over your mod!
Alas, I am slain!
Let's not forget that city block outta fucking nowhere in their Airex along with the stolen OICW model

It's a good example of what to never do. I like the two lighthouses and untextured building

a saddening thought is for every mod that you can catch using stolen content, there's probably dozens who privately mess with your shit with no way of stopping them unless they post a screenshot or video without your permission. there's just no good ways to defend against that and i hate that there's no real drm solutions for modders to protect their work because i see this so much today.
i've seen a few go with infecting their mods with viruses that only triggers when a file is tampered with or decompiled. its more effective than simply hoping your users aren't pieces of shit, but most sites won't host infected files and it can backfire on legit users.
gotta love slapping a sharpen filter on the oicw's texture to make it look ~high detail~

I never heard about booby-trapping files with viruses. Seems too drastic. I'm satisfied with public shaming for now.

Maybe with other stuff I could see this sort of mentality, but how could you go attempting to "defend the integrity" of content with any sort of relation to the Beta considering it was all one massive (and actual) theft?
I only really learned modeling, especially for Source, because I was able to decompile and examine the works of others, both from Valve and users in the community. I'm personally very grateful the big ones I was involved with had the forethought to allow others to share what they did with their assets, otherwise I'd probably still be making models that look like this:

(And this was with a tutorial.) :v:
Now, credit theft is a problem, and is the scummiest of scum things to do.

at least in the case of the missing information mod, they have put so much work into fixing valve's work or outright remaking it that they deserve more credit than valve. i'm surprised with how often their content gets stolen, they haven't used stronger measures to prevent it.
plus valve lied about the game's features and release date, ect before the leak so i don't have sympathy for them, especially with their recent history of being shitbags to their community.

reverse engineering is a pretty shit thing to do both technically and morally. it insults the original work and author and doesn't teach much about proper technical skills. illegal usage in private is a big issue that if protected against would prevent thefts form starting, but only a very few modders seem to give a fuck.

What measures would you suggest we use? No matter what someone is going to crack it. We already have our binaries set to only work if the current mod folder is named MissingInfo, which has restricted a lot of copycats to using the outdated 1.5 version of MI if they want to steal our weapon code, but I'm sure even that isn't foolproof. For textures, models, maps etc, there's really not much you can do about it except call people out on their shit. I refuse to package viruses with Missing Info. We get enough of a bad reputation as it is, we don't need to go doing shit like that.
Anyone who believed the Sept. 30th date was simply fooling themselves. I was 16 years old when that all went down and even then I knew that Sept. 30 was a bullshit date. As the years have gone on I realize I am more a fan of Half Life than I am a fan of Valve. A shame how they've left the series that got them to where they are now to rot. That being said I don't resent them. It's their company, and if they are content to just sell hats and other low effort/high profit nonsense that's their prerogative. I've gotten plenty of enjoyment from the series. Just wish they'd make HL3 already but at this point I'm pretty sure we're wasting our breath on the subject.
I don't agree with your stance on reverse engineering. It can be educational and fun. If some kid wants to figure out how some shit works in his own spare time and play around with it, who gives a fuck, so long as they don't put their name on it and release it like those retards from build 2046.

That's the airex? What the fuck?
It's like AirEx if FakeFactory shat all over it.
I'm not even sure if it is the AirEx. It just looks like a bunch of different maps pasted on top of each other. This is perhaps the biggest pile of Source vomit I ever saw.
And this is the team that steals MI's maps and models and calls our mod shit at the same time. They're pretty much calling their own mod shit!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqeMrJmiHiY "Let's decompile MI's Borealis, change all the textures and lighting to look horrible, fuck up all the gameplay, and make a general mess of things! No one will ever know!"
