• Half-life 2 Cut Content - Is it me or dose the cut content look better than what we got?

So the entire arctic section was actually the beginning of the game, interesting.
...To think Mossman's treachery was intended in the first place.
Mossman is ironically based off a cut female scientist character from HL1 that betrayed you and the other scientists to save her own skin late in the story.
Has anyone here thought about contacting Aaron Barber? His maps made up 1/3 of the stolen WC Mappack (he also made c17_01 to c17_05), and I'm thinking of sending him an email with some questions, has anyone done the same?
well at least the whole borealis thing being the opening chapter makes sense now, always wondered how they can explain the player going from city 17 to the arctic
From his older rep
Originally Posted by Marc Laidlaw (The version of the HL2 script referred to in the Final Hours, in which the game starts on the Borealis) wasn't really the "first pass" at the script. We had many different starting places and many different storylines we kicked around. In that version, you started on the ice, on foot, near the ice-locked Borealis, and then you boarded it, made you way through the ship, the ship travelled out of the ice and you boarded a minisub that took you down to an underwater lab run by Dr. Mossman and an army of stalkers. The lab was flooded, you narrowly escaped in an escape pod, were rescued by rebels and fought your way to a weather station where you boarded a C40 that flew you to the city where you crashed into a skyscraper and worked your way down through the ruined building to ground level where...my memories become unclear because we never built most of this. We already felt it wasn't working and we were moving on to more compelling scenarios. So in answer to your question "how would this have worked, exactly?" I reply, "It wouldn't work." That's why we didn't make it. I'm not sure why people thought Borealis was placed toward the end of the game in the stolen version. (By the way, it was not a "leak." It was "theft.")
Anyway we can still at least try.
From his older rep
I posted this already few posts above
So, in summary, "Hyperborea>Kraken>Skyscraper" was the old progression before the one we are all familiar with today. Which is also why the hyperborea.bat (whatever that was named) was the earliest file in the leak (or at least that's what some dude previously said on the thread). Does this also mean Vertigo was the Skyscraper in that progression and it only became Palace when Skyscraper was switched to d4? However, it still doesn't explain the whole arctic scenario on d3 in the new progression though it's possible they did not think about or made any maps on getting to the Borealis in the first place. Are the city maps (anything pre-Air Exchange) from the 2001/2002-era supposed to be sunny/daylight or dark/cloudy? I think someone once told me testroom-light maps had the "green/night/dark" lighting but everything else seems pretty sunny. Here's what Marc Laidlaw had to say about the Alien Assassin, by the way:
All I remember about the alien assassin was that it looked cool but was never fun. That was the most common reason for not pursuing an enemy type. You explore many possibilities, expecting most of them to be dead-ends, hoping eventually one of your many explorations will turn out to open up into more and more interesting behavior. If they never lead to better things, they have to be cut. Sometimes it's resource depending, and having more people to work on tasks might mean you'll pursue something longer...but this can just end up being a waste of time, so it's good to try to figure out early on what's not working. I suspect we got a little attached to how cool the models looked and so a lot of work went into trying to make those guys fun because people hated the idea of not having them in the game when they looked neat...we were constantly trying to work rough and not polish things until we knew they were going to be fun, but that rarely happened.
It's been 3 years, why is the title still not fixed
Couple more posts and the thread will get autolocked, maybe the in the next one it'll be fixed.
I think we should keep it for posterity, either that or misspell another word instead [editline]22nd April 2016[/editline] Half-life 2 Cut Contnet V2 - Posting MI content to the HL Wiki and laughing [editline]22nd April 2016[/editline] Half-life 2 Cut Content V2 - Snood's Gasmask Citizen modal
Actually I think that when this thread is locked it should just be left locked and all this go to the HL general. I don't really see why we need an HL thread and another for HL beta stuff.
But if we don't have a beta thread, where are we going to discuss this? Oh my gaaaaaaaaahhhdd!
I think we should keep it for posterity, either that or misspell another word instead
it's not the same when it's deliberate though
The unproofed edition of Raising the Bar was released. https://vk.com/wall-102159203_2019 Edit: The Dropbox account associated with the file has been temporarily suspended. I'll upload the PDF (462 mb) if anyone wants it. Edit2: Rapidgator rehost.
Ok, so the book was released. You can download it from here: https://goo.gl/epO8ZI The ammount of the new stuff there is HUGE. I'm same excited as I was when I first read the original RtB.
The dropbox link is 429'd at the moment, anybody care to rehost it?
It's things like this I was talking about, why the lighting in-game is so bright for the early city maps if there weren't any plans for the Air Exchange to go away until at least about a year later. Also, the synth looks really lonely in that corner.

How did the unproofed version got out anyway? EDIT: The one on the wiki doesn't have the Citadel in the background. Also I have never seen that model before, and it looks pretty cool!
How did the unproofed version got out anyway?
He found it on e-bay when he was searching the original RtB. Also, there was 1 more copy sold before him, but no info about the first buyer.
Mystery solved everyone we can go home now. Goddamn my heart nearly gave out when I saw that.
This pre-release RtB is a treasure trove of information. I've never seen the creation of Valve or Half-Life explained in such detail as here. [editline]21st April 2016[/editline] Unproofed indeed!
Two examples of early advertising. The first shows "Big Mama" and a variety of screenshots from Preliminary Findings. The other (facing page) introduces the female assassin, who didn't make it into the universe until Opposing Force.

He found it on e-bay when he was searching the original RtB. It seems he was just trying to flip it. What a hack!
Oh my god it has a render of the beta zombie. Words cannot describe how happy I am right now.
Here, have some renders http://puu.sh/oqP6Z/9b78397c9e.pnghttp://puu.sh/oqPrI/8773d99017.pnghttp://puu.sh/oqQAl/3f105cccd7.pnghttp://puu.sh/oqPgh/cc59bda342.png http://puu.sh/oqN9P/91a853d42b.pnghttp://puu.sh/oqRrb/ab5cf1e080.pnghttp://puu.sh/oqPbX/b97d1b8bb8.pnghttp://puu.sh/oqMGq/0e9f700301.png http://puu.sh/oqOQV/95a35da0a0.png (You might want to discover these yourself)

So this is earlier than the Free TV screenshot? I'm a bit bummed out that there wasn't any clear render of the gas mask citizen model, but at least we got this: Also, the book made no mention of Air Exchange or other cut locales (not sure, I was kinda skimming through the pages) but there are some pretty cool story snippets by Marc Laidlaw that described the journey from the arcade to Kleiner's lab to bus ride (meaning it isn't c17_02) to the start of the canals (Butou was right, it was raining). There's also a bunch of quotes that wasn't in the regular RtB that are pretty interesting (maybe they are, but I forgot). And also some oddities: Combine OverWiki says But the book says wat

This honestly reminds me of the Pinky from Doom 3.
Semi-related, but holy shit a whole chapter on gunman chronicles [editline]21st April 2016[/editline] also, i want that half-life guitar
Remember, it's called the uncorrected proof for a reason.
