This isn't even scratching the surface of all the stuff inside the .max files, we've had this stuff for years but the entire time nobody bothered to visit the modifiers tab in 3DSMax? Seriously?
That's genuinely hilarious
Holy shit! All and all this proves theres always something to see in the amazing world of Valve betas.
So this means we can have the true Beta model of both Scientist and Barney...
Is there any chance theres something like this for the HL2 models? Who knows what we can find.
did you really have to quote the entire post dude?
Also what do you mean the "true beta models for scientist and barney". We've had that for a while now.
Half Life 3 won't have nearly as much known beta content as Half Life 2 because the leak will most probably won't happen again.
Which, in a way, is extremely sad. Because all we will know about these 10+ years of content is some developer commentary and maybe raising the bar 2 if we're lucky. There will be no community that is still active after 13 years always trying to make old concepts alive again ever again, spawning fan-sites, discussions and making a new generation of modders and mappers.
Lets try out this Half Life beta mod

This mod has some charm to it. I don't hate it. It's clearly one of the first attempts this guy has ever made mapping wise. The models (the ones that aren't just straight up ported beta models) and hud are pretty neat, unless he just stole them from something else that is.
Also wtf

Dark Souls?
The guy who made that mod stole code from multiple mods, literally nothing but the maps and 1 or 2 of the models are his, the rest are stolen.
How literally fucking surprising.
And surprise again: his only original content is so subpar I wonder why he went ahead and released it in the first place.
Because he thinks it is good.
In true Valve fashion, its always like that. Look at HL1 - an entire game, levels and AI got thrown out. HL2 is no exception - theres enough Beta contente and storyline for at least 2 diferente games.
Just imagine the number of games we could do with the HL3 beta. Lol.
To be perfectly honest, I'd really prefer if Valve never releases, leaks or even mentions any content that isn't in the final game. While seeing all the old cut content is interesting, it tends to bring out the absolute worst in the community, with the number of people who'd bitch about even the most trivial graphics changes & the seemingly endless number of still-born mods that aimed to recreate the old version of the game.
As much as I'd love see the entire development process of any Half-Life game from start to finish, It's just not worth putting up with that shit.
and by "recreate" you mean endless ports of the e3 maps
I fixed your quote friend.
I would like seeing a "Raising The Bar" for all their games, however.
and by "recreate" you mean endless ports of city_test_03
Heh.

Well, you dont have to think too much to realize you see a little bit of that in every single community. You just learn to ignore it.
The secret is doing maps for fun, and for the enjoyment of seeing your own creations come to life, and not for a beta "community". In the true sense of the word, there even isnt one, actually. Youll see if you start doing that, your maps will turn out way better, you'll learn valuable modding skills, and all of that while having some good time.
Few of these mods suceed in creating something, anything even because they dont have either the time, nor the energy, nor the pre-disposition. Remember: college can and does screw most projects like these. I would love to work more on the Beta, but college eats up almost all of my time.

So rather than having to tolerate people having differing tastes and being inspired to create projects, you'd rather nobody have or see the content.
I'm sorry but that seems incredibly petty no matter which way I look at it.
Yes and don't forget people being dicks to each other and trying to get lots of attention without putting much of an actual work. And occasionally stealing from those who actually do such work.
And what online community centered around the creation of content doesn't feature this at all? Doesn't it just kinda come with the territory?
I find it funny how often this thread delves into the negatives of the leak community, thankfully it's made-up by occasional good work that gets posted, or at least some sort of interesting discussion.

We should finish that Gas Mask Citizen yo.

Yea I wouldn't mind picking that up again once the semester ends, I'll probably just start from scratch again tho, can't seem to dig out the old texture I was working on.
Man I miss Conscript

The thing is, people always have different tastes & will always change things to match their tastes, but it's only when leaks & pre-release content is shown that you have people saying "things looked so much better before the devs RUINED it!" with that single change popping up time & time again instead of actual variety there would be if people actually changed things to match their own tastes instead of to "fix" it. (But on the other hand, FakeFactory.) The only solution to this problem, that I can see, is for the content to not be seen all.
I suppose things, like the playtester that got lost in the Antlion caves could still be mentioned, since there's really no reference for how the original was meant to look, that's really the only example I can think of that might "inspire" a project, instead of how the most of the leak-mod-people aren't really "inspired" to create projects, so much as they want credit for porting/fixing crap.

What happened with Conscript?
What happened with Conscript?
Everyone just kinda got caught up in real life, esp biodude, so it sorta withered out. I wouldn't mind picking it up again but there's only so much I can do alone.

Yeah I was friends with Biodude, we just sorta stopped talking though. I was always wondering what was going on with Conscript but I didn't want to just suddenly ask him about it. Felt rude.
Sucks that it's pretty much dead, but that's just how these things go I suppose.

Since it was one of the earliest models made (probably), I wonder how low-poly it is (HL1, HL1 HD, or samuel.mdl?) and how many revisions it went if any? The Free TV one's head looks sorta different from the e3_strider one's, but it might just be the angle.
I just can't wrap my head around how the head part is like.

Which would would be more accurate (using TF2 hats for reference):

Yeah dude sounds good. It'll definitely be worth me going back to the mesh as well and improving that.
Was a shame about Conscript, that was a fun project that may or may not have been a little too ambitious.

I vote for the hazmat headcase! Definitely looks more like the Citizen 17 gas mask.
Ohey, since we're on the subject of the gasmask citizen, would you guys be interested in that one that Red Katana made forever ago?
Absolutely!

Why the fuck not. It wasn't a half bad model, and if it's unfinished somebody else is certainly gonna finish it

The hazmat one on the left would be more accurate.
The hazmat one, BY FAR. With a transparency material applied to the visor of course.
Seems that most of you chose the one on the left because of the visor. However, what's important is not the visor/gasmask itself, but the rest of the head (the green part, basically).
The Free TVs one definitely resemble a Hazmat Headcase, but the e3_strider one looks more skintight, like the hat on the right and the concept art. Hard to tell if it's just the angle or if the model really underwent some revisions between 2001 and 2002. What do you guys think?
Here are some shitty cutouts I did, just to be clear (if only there were clearer screenshots with more angles to use as reference). If anyone here can do better, please do so.

The dark lighting in the cutouts make them look like SCP-106, the first and last poses don't help at all.
Alright I'm gonna package up the gasmask citizen model, expect a release in the next few days. Hopefully tomorrow (if I remember)
