So is the game going to have the same "sit in one spot for the entire night" or will you be able to move around the place a little bit?

Thanks to the fact that we are using a full 3D engine, you will actually have to move around inside the habitat. You will need to actually walk up to windows to check them and use the lights and electrical defenses. As cramped as it will be, I hope the player will come to see the Cascade II as a home of sorts, a safe place that needs to be protected.
Oh, and one more thing. The habitat is currently equipped with one deep sea diving suit. You may end up needing to use it...
And here, have a WIP shot of some of the computer equipment I'm modeling!

Hey everyone! I'm proud to introduce the player's character for "Thalassophobia", Dr. Helena Pearson, a marine biologist aboard the Cascade II. She's been modeled and textured by yours truly! The game will take place in 1st person, but you'll be able to see her in reflections in the habitat's windows, plus her hands pressing buttons, etc. Plus, as I said before, we plan on releasing our characters and props as GMOD/SFM models as well.
The model is still a WIP and will be changed/improved between now and the final version.

This might just be me, but I'd tone down her eyes a bit. They make her look like a ~Protagonist~, when, in my opinion at least, horror works better when the protagonists are just average people.

You mean like less bright?
EDIT: I'll take the agree rating as a yes. I can tone her eyes down a bit.
I still think you're kind of insane Ryu, but whatever I'll be keeping a cautious eye on this :v:
I swear to God if you guys don't have a battle-scarred white whale I will scream.
Ain't that the name of the New Haven leader from Borderlands?
I hope giant/colossal squid and some form of giant angler make it into this game
Sea monsters are my number one fear. This seems cool, but I'll probably be too much of a pussy to play it.

I agree. Besides I'm not much of a horror game person.
my hype levels are pretty fuckin real for this if you guys can pull it off. the fact that you guys are actually modeling stuff and making it happen is a very good sign. as long as you keep up the passion, this should at least be something.
I hope giant/colossal squid and some form of giant angler make it into this game
big tentacley leviathans are a must in a deep sea setting
also, about that lovecraft reference someone mentioned at some point - avoid Cthulhu, he's overused
Just putting it out there since the other devs are offline at the moment, does anyone know if Valve has confirmed it's possible to directly port games from Source 1 to Source 2?
Also, I've fixed the hairline and the eyes on Dr. Pearson:

At the moment yes, it looks like Source 1 to Source 2 will be possible. There's no real plans for Source 2 licensing and release as far as I know though, so it might be better to stick with a more modern engine with proper licensing type stuff.
Also that hairline looks great.
Do we at least know a timeframe for when Source 2 is going to be released? If it's late this year or sometime early next year, that would work the best for us.

I'm not sure. It turns out they have said it'll be free for content developers (presumably with Valve taking a cut, much like Unreal), but a timeframe hasn't really been announced. My money's on mid-2016. If you do go with Source, I can contribute facial animation type stuff if needs be.

This seems like it'd be kinda hard to implement in Source

Right now, mid-2016 is actually our estimated release. Also even if the window reflections don't work there will be a mirror in the habitat as well.
As far as I know, Source 2 is free for use for anyone but the game has to be sold through steam.

Yes, I know. The problem is, it's not out yet.
Also I've made a couple more improvements to Dr. Pearson, such as lengthening her hair, adding more folds and wrinkles to her pants, etc.

I will also need to make a wetsuit version of her, plus a full deep sea diving suit version.
Dr. Pearson's almost done. A few more steps and she'll be finished, then I'll do the wetsuit and special deep sea diving suit versions of her.
-I've raised her hairline a bit and did some more tweaks to her hair and outfit, among other changes.

I feel her eyes are a bit off. Maybe a bit too big?
I feel her eyes are a bit off. Maybe a bit too big?
They look really cartoony, the eye whites look way too flat white and the way they shine makes them look like glass eyes.
Yeah I actually turned the brightness up on them as an experiment, but I'll go back and fix it.
I'm impressed at the lack of sexual violence.

thats a pretty low blow honestly
[sp]no pun intended[/sp]
Quick little update!
The project is still going. We're interviewing two new programmers we found on Reddit that are interested in the project.
Apart from modeling environmental stuff for the habitat, I've been doing a lot of research on the Aquarius Reef Base and learning about things that we think will prove to translate to some interesting gameplay elements!
until the next update, enjoy this clip of French Aquanaut Tom Pesquet jamming out during a break aboard Aquarius, caught on one of the habitat's many cameras.

I love me some deep sea stuff. If you want to know more about sonar and how it works, feel free to message me, I'm in submarine sonar technician school right now.

The habitat did have a sonar system, but it gets damaged at the beginning of the game, which is why the player has to rely on Hydrophones. Besides, we feel like the Hydrophone system is a bit more panic-inducing since you can hear the enemies but not see them right until they show their big ugly faces right outside your habitat window.

Hydrophones are sonar. There's passive and active sonar, active is the "ping" (projectors and transducers), passive is listening only (hydrophones and transducers). Submarines operate almost entirely on passive, we almost never use the ping, that's a movie thing.
Just saying, I know how the system is supposed to be displayed on a screen, so if you want some realism I can help out.
Research stations tend to use passive only as well BTW. Active sonar is powerful and can outright kill wildlife because it's loud as fuck. It is also responsible for making whales beach themselves sometimes. So civilian research buoys are normally just hydrophones, you don't need to ping to create a picture. Active sonar is only used to find things that don't make noise, inanimate objects, idle boats, etc. It isn't used to see wildlife or anything like that, if something makes noise (all living things) it can easily be seen on a passive sonar broadband display.
