Well, in some way even though I'm not planning on playing (even if it was free probably wouldn't have the time to touch it) at least the game isn't dead and Haxus is working on it.

Only issue is that he's dug himself into a situation that isn't easy to get out of. Since people are paying money I can see a lot of folks being pissed if the servers go down. It also means he can't make it donation-only or even free because it wouldn't be fair to those who payed. Kind of a no-win situation.
Its gonna die in about 2 months, while the majority will leave in the first.

12-13 years ago people were paying a subscription to alpha/beta test International Ragnarok Online. At the time the International version received no updates and 100% of the profits went towards fixing the Korean version rather than improving the International version.
I say this as proof that there sadly are people who will happily pay a subscription fee for something receiving little to no updates and/or isn't really being maintained despite claims to the contrary.
To somewhat be on topic, I gave this a try like 2 years ago. I could not figure out what the hell was I was doing and uninstalled. I was going to give it another shot, but I'm in the boat that isn't happy that a subscription is being slapped on.

Too bad Haxus made the game subscription based. If it was free, or pay once own for life I would probably try again to actually get into it, but subscription based platforms are instantly a no for me.

It's not even the subscription model for me. It's the fact that this specific model is $10 a month for a game that has a track record of being pretty much unsupported by the dev for most of its history. I'd be more than willing to pay like, a 5$/month sub IF that changed, but $10 is way too much. But a donate button and free is the better option really. He'd probably make more money with donations.
