This looks like a ton of fun. How easy is it to get into? I have a group of friends who probably would have a blast with something like this.

Expect an initial wall with controls (as in how to fly a ship without burning up in the atmosphere or interacting with objects) and such. It's a good time sink.
I recommend starting a new empire just to get used to the game. Your friends could join you.
Use on a crew member rather than my captain's seat, and I get "SN Anhibmog can't be mounted while she is seated at a station."
aww yeah, we ioplasma and vulcium now.

it even has a quiet [del]ocean[/del]lava coastline.
You can get magmex from the lava too, with TL10 treatment plants.
It's great for making magmium bullion, and you can also use it for armour and magmium heat sinks, if kinetic protection and shielding ever becomes useful.

should I bother wasting space using for a shield compartment on my current ship instead of more weapon systems/capacitor? My current ship has a bunch of shields right now.
Teching up is dreadfully annoying. Some buildings tech up nearly instantly, and others take a godforsakenly long time. Then there's the process of waiting for the automatic upgrading of buildings, especially if there's a lot of them e.g. mines, not to mention the massive drain in funds.
It's a shame, because I've just finished a T3 warship that i've tried to make the absolute most usage of every single ton, keeping it just under the weight limit for T3.
I found a colony selling TL32 disks fairly closeby :v:
Does Bolite, Polytaride Gas, Myrathane or Phlogiston have a use yet?
bolite is used for tessaloid dissapators
myrathane is used to make nanopath calibrators which are required for tessaloid dissapators.
myrathane is also used for myrosplicers, however im not sure if they're used for anything yet.
polytaride gas isnt used for anything
phlogiston is used to make gigacells which arent used yet.
aww damnit. I had set a weapon emitter on my ship, but after changing the design around it had been removed, so now it is shooting the giant laser from my chair :(
[editline]30th August 2013[/editline]
also, are shields worth putting on your ship or is it a better idea to just have a bigger gun instead.

It would be most informative if people with actual in-game space combat experience contributed a combat article to the wiki.

I think shields stop transporters going through, so shields are good for keeping player boarders off.

There's a magic number of shields you want right now; it has to do with the recharge rate of shields. Cant remember what it is exactly.
Pure glass cannons are no good, as they get destroyed too quickly to inflict enough damage. However, glass cannons are great for atmosphere harvesting! (once modified. I have a bit of a story about this...)
The best warships are slow as all hell, can take some punishment, and does a large amount of damage. I believe you need 6 consecutive shots for "automatic"/continous firing.
Slow as in the ship designer outright tells you it's a slow-ass ship, or is there a specific value of speed that's generally acceptable for warships?

Are tessaloid dissipators used for anything, then?

and particle collector modules are vital for gathering antiflux particles.
which are a key component in warpdrives.

my ship has 6 and it is near impossible to deplete. You could switch to 5 shots and still fire nearly as fast I believe.
This should be added to the OP imo, it's marvellously useful for sorting through planetary survey data.

well fuck our spacetour to TL32 land got hit by Limbo
[editline]30th August 2013[/editline]
AND WE'RE MOVING
The one time I decide to bring both characters into the same system the game decides to limbo that system.
Our spacetour towards a Goon ruled system has yielded a lot of FP empires with many TL32 research disks. Ff needed, I can do this again. For now I will stay in the system and see if any other facepunchers want quick acces to any TL32 disks of nearly every building exisisting, or good vulcium power armor, or anything basically as these guys are stocked with it and ready to be bought.

Anyone wants a lesson or 2 in ship design, add me on steam and shout at me: Angus725.com
Want to take an apprentice or 2 under me to help make the universe more interesting looking.
I might take you up on that
Is there a way to pre-view the ship you're designing, inside as well, not just the top down render?
I think my universities have a bug where they continue producing disks of a lower level even if the higher level has been searched already.

There's a button for that.
There's a button for that.
The "switch render mode", it only seems to give me a top down view, unless there's a way to actually move around, so far I've only managed to move forward/backwards/left/right

If the university is lower level than the other tech, it'll produce the university's max tech level.
Wait, no, I think I got it figured out.

Moving in the design studio works the same way as moving in space.
Figured out a week long SoH design syllabus for anyone interested:
Lesson 1: history review
Lesson 2: techniques of design 1
Arbitrary design
Lesson 3: techniques of design 2
Single step trace
Lesson 4: techniques of design 3
Multi-step trace, iterative design
Lesson 5: techniques of design 4
Layered trace
Lesson 6: equipment, stats, and optimization
Lesson 7: conclusion, design challenge
Each lesson is roughly ~15 mins long.
Bonus for "enrolling": A copy of many of my designs's .ship files.
ooh, im interested in lesson 6.
