If they are foreign disks, they will increment the respective industry by 1 level, if you sell them directly to the city then they will more than likely be spread out between a few of the same building.

Actually managed to land on a planet. Was amazing until I got back, had to land in a jungle far from my city, attempt to recall, only for my game to completely lock up my entire computer.

Still, tomorrow I colonize the planet.
