when you kill targos, instead of using the labor window to turn targos into leather, set your knife to butcher mode(scroll wheel until the picture turns into leather and meat) then hit the animal carcass with the knife. it will become leather a bone and a steak. eat his flesh, use his bone to make a sewing kit and his leather to make a flag.
The big keys to know are F4 (inventory), F10 (labour), and F12 (construction) starting out. Create your character, look around, see if you like the look of your planet (I hated my very first location, it was absolutely covered in jungle). If not, delete your character and make anew (you can save your character preferences so you don't take ages making him again). [del]Next, wait for the guide to complete his introduction then kill him. He'll drop an animal carcass which you can pick up by standing on top of his body right clicking (to unlock the camera from the mouse) and then left clicking once his body has turned into a mound of brown stuff. After this his body will appear in your inventory (F4) as a pixilated cow. DO NOT CLICK ON THE COW. Next hit F10 and bring up the labour window, it might be a tad small so resize it (all windows float above the main game window so feel free to reposition it so it doesn't interrupt your view) and find the leather option, it will say you can make a QL128 piece of leather out of one animal carcass. Next find a tree and using the same method you used to pick up the corpse of your guide, get a log. In the labour menu scroll down to Sewing Kit and select the option that uses logs.[/del] Do what dracotonisamond said. Using the Sewing Kit and Leather you can now make a Flag. Make it. Congratulations, you've passed the first test. [sp]Note: The guide will on occasion kill you, I find that waiting a bit after his initial introduction results in less death, in the absence of a guide to kill, you can harvest cotton fibre's from native fauna (it may be difficult figuring that out to begin with), in the absence of wood you can fashion bones from animal carcasses and sewing kits from bones (assuming the wildlife isn't out to kill you).[/sp] Now to found your first town. Hit the backspace key to bring up the overhead "planning" view. If you don't see a variety of icons such as stone (white bricks), ore (grey blobs with flecks of yellow), oil (you'll figure that one out), hit the \ or shift+\ to cycle view settings. Once you think you're on the right setting, run over to that area and just confirm that you have it by picking up whatever is lying nearby. [sp]Someone please rephrase this paragraph[/sp] Using the planning view, you'll be able to find a good place for your down center, I recommend near plenty of ore and oil if possible. Don't build near water. Open the construction window (F12) and in find the slightly larger flag icon (it should be the top left of the default tab) hover over it says "town center" on the tooltip, click it and bring your mouse back to the main window. You'll have a big circle that allows you to place where you want the town center to be, place it where you feel it should go. Congratulouations! Now click on the roads tab of construction and build some dirt roads going somewhere. Walk onto the area where you designated those roads and open the labour window. It will have changed to say "work needed", hit the Work Now button. Soon the road will be made and you can start placing more buildings down. Congratulations! Now build a mine, it will be the top-leftmost icon in the fourth (or fifth) tab, doesn't matter where you make it (as long as its adjacent to a road), and scroll until you see the number . This indicates that the mine will be four levels/work processes large. Repeat the construction of it like you made that road (be careful not to get stuck in a wall when it finishes construction). When the mine has finished building, your labour window will have changed once more. If the processes say anything other than stone change them in the dropdown menu to stone. Now hit run. Close that for now and go back to the construction window and build a house. Congratulations! You have a town!
The problem I'm not having is necessarily that (I got that far in. kind of. I got a mine built but I have no idea what level it is and I started building a house but do I seriously have to go find a shit ton of lumber and bring it back? It's so tedious) but it's more along the lines of the technical stuff: when I started and I hit backspace I had a key, essentially, that let me see all of the resources available on the planet and where they're located which was SO USEFUL but now that's disappeared. I am having the worst time figuring out the gui. In general the learning curve isn't too difficult in terms of the gameplay itself but some of the more technical stuff just goes above and beyond my comprehension

Although when you get to spaceships, be prepared to be confounded unless you bring an AI crew.
My crappy radeon died so now I'm upgrading to a nice GTX 650ti. With any luck it should run openGL way better and I might actually start playing seriously.
i just had an awful idea. haxus should make holds actually fill up with the stuff that is inside of them. just came to mind when i filled up my ship with 100k oil. also it would make hallways make sense to use instead of holds. if your hold "hallway" filled up with wrench boxes you couldn't pass. [editline]9/17[/editline] while heading to a new colonization site, i whizzed by a star kinda close and saw a ringworld. so i turned around and noticed that it orbits rather close to the primary star of the system. [t]http://i.imgur.com/OBRMPoj.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/udSv79r.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/NckMNt2.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/uizGfpa.jpg[/t] well, if that isnt a hellscape than i dont know what is. this would be a prime candidate for an inferno ringworld. [editline]9/17b[/editline] the ringworld orbits within the inferno zone of the supergiant star. so technically it should be an inferno ringworld.
Toasty
not as toasty as that ringworld tymas had that was entirely inside the 2nd sun.
if anyone from neoCAS is online in 3-4 hours from now i got something you want in this here space transport. [t]http://i.imgur.com/ymTxuCn.jpg[/t] just need to wait for my new ship to finish constructing around me and ill head out.
not as toasty as that ringworld tymas had that was entirely inside the 2nd sun.
a few pages back, im pretty sure someone found your ship. how did you rename your crew?
I should be around in 4-5 hours if that helps at all. I'm currently stranded on a world lacking the requisite air (the capital) for my latest starship mind you. While I'm at it, there an unassigned officer hanging about anywhere nearby? PM me and so such.
ships
thats pretty much not even the same ship now lol. too bad the servers are down :/
So, if I want to start making a city solely dedicated to producing bullion, how many smelters and mines do I need per machineshop to have optimal production with a tendency towards metal overflow? What's the best ratio? Some of you guys got to know.
Someone should make these ships.
Just out of curiosity. Does anyone know how Haxus is financing Hazeron? I saw the pictures of the servers he needs to keep this game running and they definitely don't look cheap.

Does it work or do you get a permanent metal shortage? The goal is not to have a surplus of ore and to have a surplus of metal. [editline]18th September 2013[/editline] Also, is it possible to copy a design or mission disk directly from my inventory?

A while ago he sold off the entire company. He moved to the farm recently so he can live his dream of throwing chickens through tires. Other than that he also owns some pretty fancy cars and an aircraft, so I'd say he's rich enough to keep paying for those servers for a couple more years, until he tries to commercialise the game one day.

i left some things on the neoCAS doorstep looked like you had most of the tech, however there is a few things i had that you didnt so not all was a waste. [t]http://i.imgur.com/4nH136b.jpg[/t] there is also two crates that will make someone happy in it, choose their use wisely. also, when changing my crystal transport mission to include air i got this treat. I'm trying to connect two cities by road that are both at opposite sides of the globe, and dear god it's taking a long time. Damn mountains.
