I checked my local Target last night. The entire shelf of Amiibo stock was as follows: 5 Zelda 3 Mario 3 Luigi 1 Peach 1 Olaf from Disney Infinity The other stores and retailers are more or less the same.

It's probably because most of the skylanders look like shit and the amiibos are of characters pretty much every corner of the world loves besides the niche community ones like Ness

I looked into how much figures used cost and if you get them on sale, they're about $2-3 each figure. Pricy new, but I guess if you're coming to it late it's pretty affordable.

Went to my local Walmart. Saw 1 Samus, 2 Toads, and a couple of Sheik. The rest was the usual common characters, but no Sonic surprisingly.

Sheik is pretty common here. I haven't bothered picking up Zelda, Sheik, or Link because they're all common and characters I care the least about.

Does anyone have any idea when the amiibo readers are coming West?

I used a razor blade instead of a knife and it worked fine. You gotta be careful though; I got my inkling girl out without damaging the box, but my silver mario box got a little fucked up at one spot. You can see my attempt with the inkling girl was much more successful. That said, probably wouldn't be too hard to make the silver mario box look nice again with the help of a gluestick.
