As I mentioned before, perhaps a critical hit system can be implemented sometime down the road. Confront naked cannibal with axe, swing at their chest or neck for bonus damage (or instant beheading) or maybe their legs to cripple them. Perhaps I'm thinking too far ahead, I dunno. As for now, they do take too many hits and it's a bit of a hassle when 5 of them are on your tail, though still manageable.
How about if you don't even start with an axe?
You start with nothing, you collect rocks and sticks and fight with them againts the mutants. Then you craft an axe with a stick and a rock and then the game starts to blend in with creating custom weapons and other stuff.
It's not hard to do this actually, just remove that axe from the beginning and it changes the whole game :v:
until you go out of the plane and pick up a rock and a stick and then poof you have an axe
not that big of a change
I'm actually not so sure how I feel about a finite amount of mutants, it has potential to lead to a very boring game state.
Provided they change the AI up a bit and make sure that you actually have to spend time killing, it would be very rewarding. Just imagine that feeling of badassery when you cut down the last mutant and take over the island for yourself once and for all.
In fact, I'm willing to bet that the devs will add special circumstances to killing off all the muties. Something like one last mutant that's very strong to serve as a final boss of sorts or something.
Well, consider that what we currently have isn't the whole map. There's a huge area across the river, and apparently a snow area that I've not found. There'll be more than a few caves, all teeming with Cannibals. I think it'll be quite a feat to take down every one of them.
It might become more difficult as well once the game gets a bit more developed and they start actively bringing in the bigger more powerful mutants to take down your buildings and hunt you.

so you just pick up a stone and a stick and have an axe
nothing changed
I have an idea!
At the beginning of the game, it's a choice. When you wake up there are mutants slowly wandering away with some suitcases.
If you choose to attack, they're startled to actually find a survivor, drop the suitcases, and run away. Maybe one stays behind to fight you.
If you sneak away, you can get the stuff later from the caves, but you get a day or two before the mutants start showing up.
The last mutant being like a super predator kind of guy who could be anywhere on the island, stalking you and placing traps himself could be pretty awesome. Like, he gets spawned if you do not follow the storyline with that kid. If you just choose overcoming the mutants to be your main goal.
Someone on the Steam Forum drew a map

[del]Funny how this guy has exactly the same ideas for good spots as me. My favorite spot is the one on the right side of the map. Mutants basically never path there.[/del]
Hmmm I am not sure now if that is the place I would go. I cannot figure out where the spot is I go even from looking at screen shots. I will have to jump onto the game to find out as I want to know where it is on the map.
-----------
Edit: Right found the right place.
The place I build is literally right next to the place it suggests on the map. The map suggests the beach as shown here.

But I build a bit further up.

Also seagulls and suitcases can swim now it appears.
I'm leaving this alone until they sort out the damage the cannibals do, them one shotting you and taking several hits to kill while coming at you in a group of 2-5 is beyond difficult, it's just plain unfair.
I'm pretty sure on day 1 the cannibals are meant to one hit you in order to introduce you to the caves at the start, cause after you wake up in the caves and escape the player seems to be able to take a lot more damage. I've survived 3 days before being captured and they just kept getting more and more aggressive till they finally got me and dragged me back to the cave, afterwards they seemed to have reset behavior.
It's purely an introductory gimmick like how in most games they have a section where no matter what actions you take there is always a fixed moment in order to introduce the player to an aspect of the game/story. In this case you find the op flare gun and a ton of dead passengers in order to introduce the player to the real horrors that lie just below surface.

I know, but rock axe becomes useful that way.
Was live streaming and this happened. Original was about 8 minutes long.

Sorry for the bad quality. It came directly from my stream.
i can only play this game for 30 minutes without a MAV occurring but i'm getting far cry 3 vibes from this (in a good way)
Aren't the access violations fixed by going into your task manager and setting The Forest's priority to high instead of normal? *note I don't actually know what i'm talking about*
So, game is shaping up pretty nicely. However, there is a greater threat at hand...

Those pesky white males are at it again. They need to check their privilege whilst they fight to survive.
In all seriousness, I can't wait to see what subsequent versions of the game bring.
But they're not even dark skinned cannibals.
So mutants can't hit you while you're crouching inside of a hunting shelter. But they can reach you from the front. So I had fun fucking up mutants from the safety of my wooden fortress and my trusty fire pit infront of the hunting shelter which lit a couple of them on fire. After collecting body parts from 2 mutants I looked around for the third, and saw a corpse standing up, slanted and in a t-pose. So I gibbed it, built an effigy, but was missing a head. Later I got knocked out after my fire kept going out due to the rain so the mutants were able to hit me. After I got out of the cave I ran straight to my little setup, along the way, noticing I had built my shelter not 18 feet away from a motherfucking cave. I found a female body on the ground near my fire, which was perfect for my effigy. So I swung my axe at the body, got launched into the air, and died.
Has anyone else come across a random mutant body near the plane that can't be gibbed? Also, I tried to set up camp at the "good spot" location on that map but I just missed it.

wow i found the tumblr that snippet comes from
it's literally the worst thing in the world
i wonder how people like that can enjoy anything
i wonder how people like that can enjoy anything
they can't and usually end up leading sad lives or none at all (suicide)
dark-skinned

dark-skinned
they are albinos
their pupils are constantly contracted to big black dots because they hang from the ceiling of caves like bats
they are based on trolls (pale, skinny humanoids who eat people and kidnap children)
how the fuck
i don't
what
Spent ages building a cabin, couldn't find a way to sleep or save in it? Do you have to build a shelter to do that?
Spent ages building a cabin, couldn't find a way to sleep or save in it? Do you have to build a shelter to do that?
yeah it has to be a shelter. I , too spent a long time building a cabin, worth it though as cannibals cant get in.
Im pretty much endgame for this iteration of the alpha. Got a house effigies, garden, endless supply of everything. Its fun but cant wait for more content.
On a side note, where are the octopus enemies that knock down walls from the trailer?
I know it was a "vertical slice" trailer but I don't see half the stuff in the alpha.

They are in the game but they don't do much at the moment. You can find them if you explore the caves a bit.

I found the spider vagina monster thing, didn't find the octopus enemy type.
this game gets too spooky for me, i just cant play it at night
just being in that cave, regardless of bad guys are there are not, just fucks me up.
[editline]7th June 2014[/editline]
and tbh the game being buggy freaks me out even more because theres weird flashing lights inside of the cave
The unpredictability of Alpha games is enough to scare me.
I nearly fucking had a heart attack playing this the other day when it froze up with a mutants face in the camera, a scream sound effect stuck looping.

[SP]Turn to the right just before you leave the caves from where the mutants drag you (there's a bunch of bodies hanging near the junction). You should come across a cavern with a passenger and a torch. If you keep going you'll find the octopus things in the next cavern.[/SP]
