It was just some visual bug. I don't think the game properly removed it when I was exploring caves. Speaking of exploring caves, I didn't take a screenshot of it, but I came across this one room where there were nothing but bloody tables. Literally tables covered in blood. Fucking crazy. The caves are gigantic too. Lots of large open rooms. Even though I was playing on peaceful mode, the caves still give me the creeps. I can't even begin to imagine what this game will be like when it's fully released. The devs deserve all the support they can get.
It's shaping up nicely, but still needs that spark to make me play it. I tried the latest update, has some nice new features, but will wait for more updates to play it nonstop. Does anyone elses game crash when the other player makes a fire pit on co-op? It's happened to both of us now twice.

Game seems to disconnect about midday on the second day every time, could be down to building fires, not sure yet though.

Lost of issues when playing co-op but still pretty fun. Boats desync and appear in different areas for each player, same with the ship wrecks and sharks. AI mutants worked fine though, no desync there. No one could save, every time you start co-op it's a new game, and when you try to your game blackscreens for a few seconds. Mutants just kill you and you respawn at the plane, no being taken to caves. Some areas with Effigies don't appear for the non-host. When my friend picked up logs that he cut, he would disconnect. Reconnecting brings him as a freshspawn in the plane. When host alt tabs long enough the other player disconnects. Obviously it's the first release and all they did was put in the netcode and disabled some features to at least get it up and running and other than the problems above it's good. There's obviously some other issues but I either forgot or haven't experienced them.
So yeah, it's confirmed that building a bonfire or a firepit causes whoever isn't hosting to get kicked into the lobby. According to my friend who was hosting, after I got booted from the game, the fire we constructed would spew an endless stream of leaves out of it and would spam the tune you hear when you finish building something. Topher's video above shows this. So far it seems like the basic fire is the only safe fire you can build.

The first disconnect was random but every time you or I got dropped after that a fire pit was just completed. It's also probably why I kept being kicked off when I rejoined.
