Is there a place to get avatars for VRchat? All I can seem to find are tutorials on how to make my own.
You sort of need to make your own, since currently you need to upload them to your account with Unity. Its not that hard to make avatars, and there is the Mixamo site for auto rigging models. After doing 1 model, the rest should be rather easy to do.
Would buying a Vive on an interest free payoff be a good idea? I have a GTX 770
970 is the minimum requirement (which is about equivalent to a 780 ti) But you should try the SteamVR performance test http://store.steampowered.com/app/323910/
IT says exactly that
From the maker of that one gay car game that got banned from Twitch
“I am against the promise of any claim to a ‘VR empathy machine’, and I am against it forever,” Yang recently wrote on his blog. “How do you know this is actually empathy you’re feeling? Do you really need to wear a VR headset in order to empathize with someone? Can’t you just fucking listen to them and believe them? You need to be entertained as well? Are you sure this isn’t about you?” Instead, Yang has a different idea for how he’ll approach VR: By creating art that is “obscenely gay,” Yang hopes that homophobes will quit playing VR games altogether. “It’d be beautiful if I managed to convince them that VR was for gay people, and so these gross people stay away from VR entirely,” he says.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/JXzwD5h.jpg[/t]
His article on the "VR empathy machine" was actually quite an interesting read, which I broadly agreed with.
Got to see some of his GDC talks in my Games Design class. Initially I thought those games were dumb as hell and whoever made them, the same. However after listening to him speak and share his actual design knowledge, I was enlightened to the fact the man's a genius.
People say games like flight sims and VR gun ranges arent that demanding, is that true? [editline]17th April 2017[/editline] I can easily afford a 1070 or a 970 though if anybody thinks that will cut it
a 970 would be a huge waste. Literal money fire. only bother with current gen either get a 1060 for nearly that same cost, 6gb could even be cheaper if you get it on sale, or a 1070 for the 1060 100% go for the 6gb model, the extra VRAM is a HUGE boost
Google Earth VR now has Oculus Support. Finally I can shit on the himalayas (?).

Haven't seen this posted here yet, but Yooka-Laylee has a VR mod. It plays pretty well. I wouldn't have checked out this game without the VR mod but it's a really neat experience and some people are saying it plays like Lucky's Tale. It runs better than I expected, too. [hd]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dr_04PCSDWE[/hd] Facebook's social VR app is in beta now. It's not Oculus Rooms, this is a different one called Spaces meant to be used with facebook friends and you can for example call a friend on Facebook's messenger and bring them to VR with a video call to their smartphone.
Just tried it out, seems cool and I think it has some real potential for sure. It seems pretty much like what they showed off a few months ago, so I hope they keep adding to it
Also called some friends with the video, it's pretty cool but has serious connection issues atm. Choppy audio, grainy video, the servers are currently not strong enough to handle all the people trying it out.
The perspective is throwing me off and this looks like she's got a fucking huge hand
I really want to buy a vive. But I can't decide if I should.. I've waited this long because I wanted to wait for the second version. But now I really feel the urge to get it. I just don't know if it's worth it. It feels like I won't use it that much because of the lack of games I want to play. Google earth vr would be nice to try, but for how long? A few hours at most I guess. And then there's hot dogs horseshoes and hand grenades. That will probably be fun but I could definitely see my self get bored with it quickly too. I guess there are a few more titles I want to play, like dcs world, Assetto Corsa etc. I have already played those on the DK2 though. What do you say, do you feel like it's worth all that money? Anyone here regretting their purchase?

Anyone here regretting their purchase?
The best advice I can give is that, with the vive specifically, I wouldn't be too worried about waiting for another generation. The current vive looks like it's here to stay for a little while longer. As for if it's worth the money and whether or not you'll regret it, I personally don't. Buying the vive thrust me into being well and truly involved in the VR community and because of it, I'm finding at least one new experience every week or so that gets me to set up room scale and give it a go, as well as a bunch of other games that keep me coming back. You may not be into shooters but games like Onward and Pavlov are must-buys if you're getting into roomscale gaming imo. If you do buy, I think you'll have more than a few months worth of content to burn through and catch back up on before you start to worry about never using it.

I certainly don't think I got all-that for my money, the tech still has a few hurdles to cross and the price is huge. However if you want to see the advancement of VR, see interaction methods be refined and are generally interested in how it evolves, you might get something out of it. But seen purely as an entertainment device, the tech is too early and the cost too high. You should view it more as an entry to the current VR rush and witnessing it firsthand, if that's not your thing, I'd recommend you hold out a bit longer.

The biggest reason I don't regret getting a VR headset early was that I got to show people who had no idea what it was, which has honestly been the single most entertaining thing about it. It sounds to me like you're a lot like me, and it was exactly like you said - Google Earth VR is one of those things I've been waiting to happen since I heard that VR was happening, and yet I have a playtime of 84 minutes. It's fucking amazing, but not something that has lasting appeal. There hasn't actually been anything at all that had lasting appeal for me, [sp]except combining VR with weed and/or porn.[/sp] In short I don't regret it, but from an "objective" standpoint it was absolutely not worth the cost.
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm having a a hard time deciding. But also I could answer my own question because judging by the time I've used my DK2 I probably haven't got my money's worth and it was a lot cheaper than the vive. It's just the controllers I'm after and I imagine my mind will be blown again because of the higher resolution, room scale and the controllers.
I haven't used my rift in... A solid month or two, at least. Generally, that's how it is. A game will come out, I'll play for a few days, and then I'll put it down again. Not that it isn't a good system, it's just massively inconvenient compared to firing something up on my monitor and playing that. My VR room has had three office chairs in it for a few weeks as well, which only restricts the space I've got. I don't regret buying it, I just wish I had waited a generation. This headset will probably be stuck in a glass box in a year or two and just start collecting dust, which isn't really the best use of the money.
I still really need to find time to go somewhere that I can actually try VR out. My slightly screwy eyes still worry me about it.
If I wasn't a student in Game Art (with a little game design) and didn't use my Vive in development, I'd feel like it wasn't worth it. Most of the time I can't be assed setting it up to play games for a few hours. However it's been invaluable on my course, I've had 2 VR projects this year and it's opened my eyes to the possibility of getting a job creating VR content. If buying a Vive is a big economic deal to you, then I'd probably avoid it, it's a lot of money for something that's in it's first generation.
Is it OK to leave the Vive's lighthouses plugged in all the time? Does it go into a sleep mode or does it just stay on all the time? A lot of people are complaining about having to set it up every time but when I was borrowing a vive from a friend for a bit it was just a matter of plugging in, putting on and adjusting the headset, turning on the controllers and firing up a game, which took like 90 seconds in all.
They go into sleep mode however it's always safer to just unplug them. I've noticed with the headset itself that the screen gets warm even when it's not being used so I'd recommend unplugging everything when it's not being used.

The lighthouses I left plugged in though, I'll remember to unplug them when I eventually get my own. It was a bit annoying when I forgot to charge the controllers or didn't notice how low the batteries were before I put them away, but I found that they charged up pretty quickly.
The controllers usually power off too but I have had a few instances where they don't and it seems to be if SteamVR crashes.

However, if you enable the bluetooth function and keep the headset in sight of the lasers for about a minute after the headset/SteamVR powers down, the lighthouses will also power down and go into standby mode (Dim green light and the motor isn't running, makes it silent too). Though it isn't time consuming to manually plug things in, like you said so it doesn't matter
Imo it's better to keep them constantly on if you can if they're in a stable position-- motors wear the most during startup and spindown
