Should I buy the Oculus bundle for $400? I was originally gonna get a Vive, but since this is $300 less, and it's on sale. I figured I'd ask.
If finances concern you then there's no real way to justify the vive over the rift - with the extra camera you get almost the complete functional roomscale experience that the vive offers for nearly half the price. Plus until the knuckle controllers come out, the rift has arguably the better control method. Just a shame about them USB ports, is all. [editline]12th July 2017[/editline]
I haven't actively tried it, but I don't think so.
Steaming works fine. Steam uses some sort of overlay UI while in-game and that pops up once someone asks you to watch.
Looks like i'll be joining in on vr soon, with the oculus bundle sale. Just ordered it, and i'm looking forward to testing it after trying dk1 and vive at a friends house.
With many people buying rifts and experiencing VR for the first time, I thought it would be best to advertise the facepunch VR discord. We have VR events for multiplayer VR games and other stuff too. https://discord.gg/5ZqmQdk
Should mention that the Vive is $700 with free shipping today only if you have prime on amazon.
Fucking amazing, $700 for you guys. Out of stock and £975 for uk amazon. £759 on the official vive website. Makes me cry a little inside
Flying planes in DCS with VR is cool but iffy But jesus christ with helicopters it makes it so much easier for some reason. I think its because you need very high spatial awareness for helios. I was flying the Ka-50 and its usually wonky at best but with the Rift it was a different experience. I was flying formation with the NPC choppers and using mountains and buildings for cover with ease. I can't wait for the F-14 and F-18 with carrier ops, thats going to be pants shitting.

I went to the mall today and they just happened to be demoing an Oculus Rift, so naturally I had a go at it. I really like the controllers. I can't really say much about how the VR was because it would fog up instantly even after wiping it. Now with the Rift on sale for such a good price, I'm interested. But before I do it, I want to know how you guys keep the lenses from fogging up? What's the best/least tedious way of keeping the image clear?

I didn't actually noticed the fog until after I took the rift off (the fog was on my glasses)

May help to have good A/C or a dehumidifier so your room's humidity is low. Note that this also affects it after someone else uses it - they sweat up inside it, and you can't really dry it out all too well without just letting it sit there and air out. I use a Vive so it's a little different, but when I demo'd a friend's, I had the same problem - after like 10 minutes, it was so fogged up that I couldn't see a thing. When I got mine, I replaced the non-breathable foam "facial interface" with a sleep mask with a hole cut in it, and that helped a lot - I can play nonstop with no fogging, it's more comfortable, and it gets your eyes closer to the lenses so it's in better focus.
Alright, now I've run into another issue. I don't think I have the right video output. :v: My card is definitely good enough for the Rift, but I don't see any HDMI port on it unless it's somehow hidden. I have an HDMI port elsewhere on the back but I don't know if that would work.

Does it just have DVI/Display port?
Out of curiosity, what card is good enough for the rift but doesn't have an HDMI port? Does it just have DVI/Display port?
Yes, it just has DVI. Someone suggested using a DVI to HDMI converter but I don't know how well that would work. I'm gonna be annoyed if everything meets the requirements and the only thing setting me back is the display ports on a "vR-ready" card. :v:

I have to parrot the concerns of Elspin though - are you sure you have a VR ready card, yet no HDMI ports?

[editline]12th July 2017[/editline] So, it looks like I'll be fine as long as I get an adapter. Unless anyone knows spmething I've missed I'm gonna order it.
Seems good to me, friend. Welcome to the VR community!
And placed it. Thanks so much for all you guys' help!
Got my Vive and spent the first 6 hours messing around in the Lab and Steam home. Only played BAM and sports bar for about an hour and haven't actually played anything else. I'm having a blast with it already

I've been all cramped up for two days now because I played for so long :v:.
Some revenue number from the Oculus store: https://www.roadtovr.com/oculus-multiple-vr-titles-made-1m-oculus-store-alone/ Interesting bit:
“That doesn’t mean we’re done with investment,” he says, “but we move up the investment chain. So we used to invest $100K, $200K, but we don’t have to do that so much anymore because those people can get paid out [from the install base]. Instead, the company is now operating at a higher level, funding content in the $1 million to $5 million range, since it’s games of that scale where the risk has shifted to and where developers are less likely to be sure they can break even.
[editline]13th July 2017[/editline] Apparently they're announcing another fully funded title soon too.
And placed it. Thanks so much for all you guys' help!
If your card has a DisplayPort then a Displayport-to-HDMI would be better. Since it can transmit audio.
If your card has a DisplayPort then a Displayport-to-HDMI would be better. Since it can transmit audio.
Modern DVI implementations support audio. I would be surprised if a 1060 didn't (although I'm surprised a 1060 still uses DVI to begin with).

I remember on one of my older cards, I didn't realize it had HDMI until I upgraded because the port was capped in a way that looked like it was just part of the card.
Also, I just realized I'm dumb, because I'm pretty sure the Rift just does audio over USB so the port type shouldn't matter. Otherwise, any 1060 should have HDMI or Displayport or Both. From what I can see online at least.

Well, I pulled the trigger on a Rift, should be here in a week or so. I'm pretty excited to get into shit like Tilt Brush et cetera.

If you're just doing something like the P-51D, FC3, or one of the earlier jets like the F5, you only need a really basic stick and throttle. If you want something like the A-10C or the upcoming F-18, then you need something with alot of buttons.

But honestly I can't go back to playing with a conventional monitor setup now. I don't know if its worth it for a headset alone but a headset with the other VR games + DCS is justifiable for $400 IMO. If you already have one then you can play DCS world free with the trainer P-51 or Su-25 to try it out. If you're going to buy something, ease into it with FC3 planes first before moving onto the hard stuff like A-10c. The immersion factor is off the scale. When I was diving to the deck in my Ka-50 I thought I could actually feel my self falling a few times. Any HOTAS will do though some are better than others. I use an old Saitek X52 with zip ties to tighten the controls up a bit. Whats important for ones like DCS A-10 is that you have a lot of d-pads/hat switches to move sensors around or change to different aspects of the cockpit displays etc. Other ones like Ka-50 you can just bind a few buttons and use the virtual cockpit. Some people really preach for the Thrustmaster Warthog, but it isn't needed, you might just struggle with very fine maneuvers like closed up formation flying cause Saitek quality is ass.

I bought a Vive to do development stuff, and I've had it for 6 months and haven't developed anything at all. Looking for inspiration or ideas, what would you guys like to see in a VR game?
