Wouldn't making additional peripherals be technically easier for the Rift, since you'd just need IR LEDs and not sensors on the devices?
in theory it should be about the same. The IR LED's used in constellation aren't dumb, they pulse in 10-bit patterns so that the system can uniquely identify individual tracking points, which means at the very least that your peripheral needs to be connected to the Oculus platform the same way a new peripheral would need to be connected to steamVR. Oculus has said they plan to open the API to third parties, but there hasn't been any news on that in a while.
I think mostly just the lack of big news around the Vive in the past months, while the Oculus subreddit got bombshell after bombshell from OC3. With the Steam Dev Days starting tomorrow that shouldn't last long though.
Accurate. One company had a huge announcement session and the other hasn't released any updates, which obviously casts the other in a negative light relatively.
One thing Lighthouse tech definitely does better than Constellation is handling many tracked objects. There's little additional cost in having many objects since each calculates its own orientation, while in Constellation tech you have to be able to identify every object from a single image stream.
Lighthouse is also able to do more with less visible sensors than the rift cameras, because it can identify which sensor the light came from, unless they've made changes to the typical approach. When you look at constellation tracking, you see a bunch of lights without knowing which light each is until you can identify a pattern that tells you what you're looking at. Lighthouse tracking can identify which sensor was hit without any nearby sensors needing to be hit, because each sensor is being calculated on board and has an identifier.

This is what I meant by making changes to the typical approach in my original post above. Obvious issue with this is it adds significant computation time, you need to see a light consistently for long enough to identify the 10 bit patterns, you need to allocate IDs between devices, etc. Nothing much that's a big deal for VR but outside of VR being able to track yourself with literally 0 communication to the tracking system is great
Somehow I totally missed this trailer from a few days ago. Here it is for anyone else who also missed it: the game by 4A Games (Metro series).

Reminds me of Doom 3 if it had VR. But way more awesome.
How do you move, though? Doesn't using a joystick cause nausea

Speaking of, I'm trying to decide between the Vive and the Rift. I'm REALLY trying to enjoy roomscale tracking so I'm probably going to go with the Vive. I'm just looking for someone to confirm I'm not making a bad choice before I drop the $800

They're both the same price with Touch now so all it really comes down to is ethics.
So wait, how do I activate the new ASW thing on Oculus again?

If you're on the fence about the two you could wait for the release of the touch to see what people think of them. I mean they seem pretty solid from the people who have tried them but you should take any demo of an unreleased product, especially if done in a controlled environment, with some amount of caution I suppose.
Someone rigged and animated the character sculpt he made in Oculus Medium

Whoa, helicopter hair.
Ordered the Vive with the free Amazon Prime trial. Should be here Friday. If I had done it 6 hours ago I would've had it Thursday when I'm off from work but oh well.
I've just come back from hosting a VR music/soundboard university project at the local events center for art week. Among the crowds of people interested in trying VR for the first time, I got tons of kids who REALLY wanted to show their parents, some of whom actually knew their technical shit and kept coming back to try the demo again.
All in all, I now have a very bright outlook on the future of VR if everyone's this enthused about it.
Man, I hope the Vive gets some good titles. I'm seeing a lot of really good looking AAA titles going to exclusivity Oculus.

Has there been any news of studios getting access to that $100M that HTC made available just after the Vive launched? Even if that's the case, it'll probably take another year before we see results.

And that's the reason VR is never gonna be more than a gimmick, you can't drive a car properly holding your hands + controllers up all the time. So until we have full FFB suits none of these things will work.

Except that only a small amount of things would really need stuff like that. Most games wouldn't benefit a whole lot from that.

Wrong neighbourhood to be saying that man. You don't want to get stabbed by a Vive controller now do you.
Also I don't really see anyone trying to playing driving games with just controllers. Anyone who cares enough about driving games to play them in VR most likely already has a steering wheel hooked up.

No, VR driving games are literally pointless in every possible way until you can walk around in a room scale play space and sit anywhere as if you could feel the car. Just sitting in a chair and using a steering wheel with the VR headset would be ridiculous, I don't know how anyone could enjoy that :v:
Oculus put all their developer session videos from OC3 up on Youtube:

Huge amount of really neat information in that hashtag by the way, not just VR related. Apparently Valve wants to make lighthouse tracking very standardized and ubiquitous, which I would love. For people outside the robotics industry, lighthouse tracking expanded to be more capable and extendable is literally a dream come true. Nikon has a system that does similar things but it costs like a quarter of a million dollars for a basic kit so it's out of range for basically everyone. Tracking things precisely indoors has been a bugbear of epic proportions in the robotics industry for the last 20 years

Also apparently Valve said they're adding asynchronous reprojection soon. No idea if this also includes spatial reprojection.

gj having this as a launch title
Apparently Tim Sweeney is being a bit 'optimistic' on stage at the Steam Dev Days right now.

Garry has been shitposting jokes about steam dev days with people unsure if he's serious on some of the satire because he could actually be there, pretty cheeky

The "paid mods are the future" tweet actually came pretty close to being embedded on SteamDB. Couldn't find a second person corroborating it. Then realized it was classic Garry. :v:
