Im going to a hackathon 2morrow and will most likely fuck around with an htc vive. Anyone got cool suggestions on what to make?
use a physical curve algorithm to give yourself octopus arms
putting together 2 pockets on a belt to holster my viimotes was the greatest decision ever
now when I need to just have 1 vive out I can just have the other fuck off onto my belt

now I really need a gun grip/holder thing
Cannot get the hang of jumping in Climbey. Its making me feel like DSP
First time I hear about this game, it looks really fun.
You can use a sword slash to deflect projectiles while using a gun in the other hand.
It also seems like you can dash around without necessarily having to aim a teleporter.
The dynamics are pretty basic but it feels like the start of what a Platinum Game would feel like in VR.

Gen 2 Vive might be revealed at CES 2017.

I'd more likely call it a hardware revision than a generation. (New controllers, better ergonomics etc; core tech stays the same)

oculus is investing in eye tracking, and i'll bet that valve is doing the same
it's inevitable
Doing a hardware rev does definitely make sense. If they're not already using the Triad ASICs for the Lighthouse sensors, they'll be cheaper. They were talking at Dev Days about a new base station design which only has a single rotor rather than two, so that'll definitely be cheaper to manufacture, and then obviously there's the new controller prototypes they showed. On top of that stuff, no doubt HTC'll want to take another pass at the ergonomics and industrial design.
I'd be very surprised indeed if Valve wasn't looking at eye tracking. If they're not researching it themselves, they'll probably do what they're doing with wireless VR and fund someone else who's researching it.
it's inevitable
Foveated rendering is incredible. I can't wait for eye tracking just for that. Everything else is gravy imo
Does anyone else have a problem when playing Onward where you get kicked out to the SteamVR home screen every so often? Its the only game I've had this problem with and I can't find any reliable info on it anywhere.
I hope that if they add new stuff, that you can also upgrade your older model. It's not like a phone where it's reasonable (if not expensive) to buy a new one when it comes out every other generation or so.

Do you mean it flashing your steamVR home background before going back ingame?
That's pretty common for games with longer load times.

Yep that's exactly what it does, only its not during loading but during game play every 30sec to a minute.
That's how stuttering usually looks in VR, so it's probably a performance issue

It's a performance issue. If the game doesn't submit a frame to the headset for a long enough period (ie it's locked loading something or doing some other operation that is blocking execution) it'll kick you back to SteamVR and wait for the program to start responding again. Turn down your settings to lowest and see if that fixes it.
tbh with eye and hand tracking being worked on Gen 2's are going to be fucking amazing
that, and the gtx1080 being as strong as it is, I wonder how much farther they'll take the resolution
i know i'm late to the game
but we're using tiltbrush to plan out our vr game
it's fucking amazing

hopefully we'll get a working prototype after the hackathon but the inspiration for the game came from me thinking "hackertyper, BUT IN VR!"
quick question - with the likes of lets say GTA V and/or skyrim, that can be modded to use the vive/rift - they're not true 3D and it just lets you physically "look" around the the environment is that right?

bugged game mechanics
VR makes the transition from sliding a car in the dirt in a simulator to sliding a car in the dirt in real life so easy, it's crazy.
Pretty cool VR poker gameplay with Touches

Truely, the super best friends were right in calling vr headsets the "give up machines" :v:
