So I have to ask since 2 of my friends just tried out a vive. One of them tried the oculus first and said the vive was way more comfortable, and the other keeps reminding me of the fact that the vive has wall mounted sensors.
With the touch being $200 I'm starting to feel like there was no benefit to getting the oculus. Can anyone who has used both tell me some good pros and cons of each and which one they prefer?
just as a disclaimer i've only used the rift once a few years back
but i'd go with the vive, personally. slight bias because that's the headset i ended up going with but your friends aren't wrong. the wall mounted sensors, when set up right, make the roomscale experience seamless.
the vive just feels like the more complete room-scale package at the moment, and has a library that's obviously more built for room-scale. this carries the advantage of basically buying a room-scale package and getting a powerful HMD with it. you can play the oculus seated experiences just fine with a vive, which means you're not missing out on any games right this moment going for the vive.
one of the biggest things i remember from using the rift is that it's much clearer than the vive, image-wise. while most won't find this a problem because of the vives higher FOV, if you're going for graphics and looks, go for the rift. the extra clarity makes a big difference.
plus, most people say the opposite regarding the comfort level. most people say that the rift is lighter and more comfortable. in my experience, this is negligible, since you already tend to forget the vives on your face after ten or so minutes.
Who wants some random John Carmack lore?

so after almost vomiting from flying a plane in VR. ill stick with normal VR games.
Oculus Rift has a clearer image both in general and in terms of clarity loss approaching the periphery.
It is also lighter with integrated high quality headphones and a rigid spring-using strap that make putting it on like a hat.
The only reason to say the Vive is more comfortable is if you wear glasses, which don't fit very well into the smaller Rift headset. Other than that reviews significantly prefer the comfort of the Rift. As a side note, PSVR is said the be the most comfortable of the three.
Plus, the Rift's Touch controllers are nicer all around. Go back just a page or two; I posted a review comparing them against the Vive wands.

It would be best if you tried both out if there are demos in Best Buy or Microsoft stores near you.
Wait, why is he getting so many disagrees? Nothing he said is wrong, and it all correlates with my experience in using both. I've also done a demo with the Touch controllers and think they're hands down better than the current Vive wands.
Hm, having some issues with SteamVR. Noticed with both ETS2 and Nvidia's VR Funhouse especially that after a few minutes in game, either I'll be thrown back to the Steam home place or the displays on the Vive will freeze (static image->instant motion sickness) and SteamVRs widget says that the game is unresponsive. I've tried changing drivers for my GTX 1070 and disabling the camera but no dice. Any ideas?

Because if you prefer the Rift in this thread you're automatically wrong.

A VR mod for Penumbra Overture was released, it's a little wonky right now but I recommend giving it a go to anyone who owns the game.
And even if you don't, it's on sale for $1.99 which is a steal if you like horror.
I managed to get my Rift working on a 970m laptop, using the thunderbolt port.
Now I don't have to haul my machine around and ASW works wonders.

There's also a Doom 3 VR mod which is fully playable in roomscale

I gotta second this, @bloodshot12.
Are there any stereoblind people here like myself? I can't see in 3D so I'm wondering what VR is currently like. I'll love to dive into VR at some point.

VR ought to have the same appeal to you as it does to anyone else. It puts you inside a game.
Weren't there also stories about VR fixing stereoblindness?
Weren't there also stories about VR fixing stereoblindness?
There were a few 'miracle' stories but I wouldn't really call it an effective treatment. Most will still have stereoblindness in VR too.
I ordered my vive while it was on sale, should i get those lenses as well?

Touch orders are being processed and charged now!

After many headaches from something very simple, I got Custom Maid 3D 2 working on the Oculus, with the uncensor mod functional too. I have achieved enlightenment.

Do it for Honey Select as well.
Also, make sure your characters have proper height. You might be dealing with full bodied waifus that only reach the height of your waist.
Man, Google Earth VR is a magical experience. Plus setting the floor at stomach height really makes the cities look like toy cities.

VR lens lab has a history with low quality Rift products that don't fit right, sold for high prices. I don't know if their Vive products are any better, but I do know that the cheaper 3D printing + Zenni Optical route for the Rift is better and cheaper. You might look around on reddit to see if there's a similar Vive solution that doesn't charge you high just because they can.
Is it possible to use your glasses with the Vive?
Is it possible to use your glasses with the Vive?
Pretty much everyone's glasses have fit inside our vives without adjustment, just the largest ones didn't make it in. Don't know the exact range of dimensions that fit but it definitely works for most people.
Is it possible to use your glasses with the Vive?
Unless they're ridiculously big, yes. However, that didn't stop some users from managing to accidentally scratch their irreplaceable Vive lenses. 30$ is a worthwhile investment for a clip-in prescription lens solution to protect your $600 headset.
I've never had anybody wear their glasses in the Vive, I always ask people to try it without first and they always say it looks clear so I just leave them like that. I'm fairly nearsighted and I use the Vive without glasses/contacts every day. The one time I tried using glasses I just adjusted the screen distance knob and pushed it out a little bit to keep the glass from rubbing.
Onward developer now has Touch controllers and will be releasing official support on Dec 6 launch day.
I feel like playing games since being 3 years old (Doom on Christmass with cousin) made me immune to any VR sickness. At least I don't feel like I will get any sick. The worst thing I felt was some weird pressure or something, when playing Doom 3.
And about all that Rift vs Vive, If roomscale is what you desire, go with Vive. It's flawless, easy to set up (making holes in wall and thats it), and once it is done, you don't hate to worry, no matter where you look or crouch or move.

Not native support though, seems he's just adjusting the button mapping in SteamVR :/
So we still don't have haptics (until Valve fixes that) and ASW.

How many videos of Touch performing great in roomscale will it take to dispel this idea Vive owners have that only their product works?
How many videos of Touch performing great in roomscale will it take to dispel this idea Vive owners have that only their product works?
There is difference between "works" and just works. No cables for lighthouses going to PC, no problems with occlusion without third camera (that the company ITSELF recommends, you can't deny this), longer cable, camera that helps etc.
So if you want the roomscale more than sitting and playing simulators, Vive will win out of the box.
