I've been watching this thread for a few days now. Ordered a Touch set last week, and came here to see how it'd work, since the subreddit hasn't been super helpful. I was not expecting this. I can let you all know how my setup works, and because I don't have stake in this game, I'll be pretty neutral. It's going to arrive just before Christmas, so I guess I'll come back then. Take it easy folks.

I'll let the the thread know how it goes
and lo, the storm comes http://www.theverge.com/2016/12/8/13894000/magic-leap-ar-microsoft-hololens-way-behind
and lo, the storm comes http://www.theverge.com/2016/12/8/13894000/magic-leap-ar-microsoft-hololens-way-behind
What a surprise. Nobody saw this coming. How unpredictable. 2016's curve balls just never end do they? [editline]1[/editline] I prematurely apologise for all the sarcasm dripping from this post all over the one below.
man I always knew magic leap was full of shit I wanna know just how much is fabricated by this point, like the solar system demo if they faked the grordbort thing what's to say they didn't fake that? didn't have any jitter or flicker, if such a thing was in the real prototype how would you account for that without video editing? and at that point if it's doctored at all, that already makes the claim that it's 100% real footage within the video itself a lie
lmao what the fuck I never saw that video before, how did people not realize this was fake, one of the numerous giveaways being that the guy has a solid grip on an object that supposedly doesn't exist Unfortunately this type of thing is incredibly common in the tech industry and although anyone tech savvy enough can see it's meant to be a mock-up, a lot of people end up believing it's real because conveniently for them it's never properly explained.
http://uploadvr.com/facebook-demos-prototype-touch-controllers-temperature-regulation/
He presented two Touch controllers, each of them wired up to a concealed piece of hardware. Without entering VR, the Facebook team took turns in holding the controller around a campsite environment. With manual programming, they could hold their hands to a fire and feel the controller heat up, and then cool them by taking their hands away or holding other items around the camp. Blue and orange orbs would grow around the user’s virtual hands to visually communicate the intensity of the temperature.
Superhot VR is just the funnest shit ever. Give it a go if you haven't already. Also, anyone checking out that H3VR advent calendar thing? It's pretty fun. A couple of new guns being added in every day.
Got stuck in the escape pod level in I Expect You To Die late last night. Today I realised I might be able to progress by stopping the engine from overheating by jamming a glued-up grenade back into its belt. Quality VR gaming :v:
lmao what the fuck I never saw that video before, how did people not realize this was fake
it was pointed out which is why for one they showed stuff that wasn't transparent, with stating it's shot through their tech. I didn't read the verge article in that they tend to report on a narrative over facts. So I'm going to guess and someone can tell me how correct I am. here's the video in question, 2015, obvious fake.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t make it to TED, but we wanted to share one of the things that we’d planned to share at the talk. This is a game we’re playing around the office right now (no robots were harmed in the making of this video).
no fucking shit it's fake, people already pointed this out, so what was the next footage they released. Now maybe it's all fake, well if that's so then you better call out the wired on saying "they tried it"
nfortunately this type of thing is incredibly common in the tech industry and although anyone tech savvy enough can see it's meant to be a mock-up, a lot of people end up believing it's real because conveniently for them it's never properly explained.
Here's something mentioned in passing with Jeri Ellsworth with CastAR, investors/businessmen rather see concept over the real prototype. Every bullshit marketing that has come out of magic leap "it's not a lens", is for getting money. For instance Abrash, is full of imaginary shit, but he sell a story people fall for which keeps people like investors happy, especially people who read this thread. What's most likely going on is that Microsoft is coming closer to releasing the hololens and wanting to corner the market they still smell blood in the water from Magic Leap getting bad publicity from leaks and the only public statements are full of marketing buzzwords.
http://uploadvr.com/facebook-demos-prototype-touch-controllers-temperature-regulation/
Tho it burns through smartphone battery in minutes. Useless.
Tho it burns through smartphone battery in minutes. Useless.
yeah that prototype they're selling on the market as a finished product is so bad, shame on them for even trying
yeah that prototype they're selling on the market as a finished product is so bad, shame on them for even trying
Unless they make some revolutional battery, stuff like this will be impossible.
Battery tech is the solution for everything p much, it just doesn't evolve at the same speed as the other tech.

For sitting at my desk using a mouse + keyboard, would using a Rift be better or a Vive?
For sitting at my desk using a mouse + keyboard, would using a Rift be better or a Vive?
For just sitting down, both headsets offer more or less the same experience. But if you're not interesting in checking out standing/roomscale at all, and know you're purely going to be doing seated experiences, I'd probably say go for the Rift. I hear its a little lighter and has higher clarity. Though TBH, depending on what you're doing with it, if you have no interest in roomscale at all it might be better to opt out of the high-end VR headsets in general, go for something cheaper.
Battery tech is the solution for everything p much, it just doesn't evolve at the same speed as the other tech.
Graphene batteries to the rescue (hopefully!)
Summary video
so after a long period of consideration I've settled on the Vive. I prefer the "dumb" two-sensor system the Vive uses for room scale, and field of view and peripheral vision are extremely important to me. I guess I can deal with the trackpads since most Vive games will be designed around them anyway. I do wish the Vive was more comfortable though. The Rift demo was really nice to use.
Wow Sony patented VR gloves. Looks like they really went all out on PS VR. http://wccftech.com/sony-files-patent-glove-controller-potentially-psvr/
Don't think if this was ever posted here, but there's a handy tool going around the Vive community for adding advanced settings to OpenVR: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/5hgtuz/release_openvr_advanced_settings_v21/ Allows you to adjust resolution scaling, audio settings, push-to-talk, chaperone settings, and some other stuff on the fly from the VR menu.

It's worth it alone for the chaperone settings, which lets you made shapes that aren't just squares out of your play space.
Get on this, if you haven't already. It's worth it alone for the chaperone settings, which lets you made shapes that aren't just squares out of your play space.
Can't you just do that with advanced option when you make play space boundaries?
Can't you just do that with advanced option when you make play space boundaries?
Yeah, but you can only make a triangle or a square, right? I'm gonna feel pretty dumb if I could have made a custom shape with advanced mode the entire time.
Yeah, but you can only make a triangle or a square, right? I'm gonna feel pretty dumb if I could have made a custom shape with advanced mode the entire time.
You can make whatever shape you want as long as the final space can fit a rectangle in it (which seems to depend since valve's fitting algorithm fucks up quite often)
Yeah, but you can only make a triangle or a square, right? I'm gonna feel pretty dumb if I could have made a custom shape with advanced mode the entire time.
You can make any shape you want. It will make square out of that, that will count as the 3mx3m for example, but when you are in game, it will show custom shape you made, not the square. Square is more or less only for that "you can play those games according to your play space" thing.
