intel unveils project alloy, a wireless vr headset that doesnt need controllers to see your hands https://newsroom.intel.com/chip-shots/intel-unveils-project-alloy/ they also are introducing "Vision for Merged Reality" at a developer forum (bunch of vids and info here) https://newsroom.intel.com/chip-shots/intel-ceo-introduces-vision-for-merged-reality-at-2016-intel-developer-forum/ microsoft is also working with them to bring AR to every win 10 pc http://www.pcworld.com/article/3108477/hardware/microsoft-will-bring-holographic-mixed-reality-to-every-windows-10-pc.html :snip:
It really blows my mind how out of touch and early-2000's Microsoft's advertising continues to be. The music in that holographic shell demo was just unbearable, I don't get why Microsoft can't hire some decent marketing people to make their promo videos look less cringeworthy. [editline]17th August 2016[/editline] It'd be cool if all those mixed reality demos could sample from the environment's lighting and shade the camera feed a little bit so the person standing in the middle of a VR scene blends in a little better.
Somebody ported HL1 on Xash to gear vr, did anybody ever make an oculus port of xash?
[T]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/71184478/ShareX/2016/08/chrome_2016-08-17_22-42-10.png[/T] I frickin' called a few weeks ago. Welp.
After all the issues from people trying to order the vive/rift and getting their purchase declined as suspicious, I did the same with my bank before ordering my laptop. So after being assured that all would be fine, the next morning I find out my card has been reported stolen (by my bank, due to "suspicious activity") and thus cancelled and my order didn't go through, and I only found out when I tried to log into my account as they didn't notify me at all. The incompetence is astounding v:v:v
:snip: oh right, how could i possibly forget about this?
what about in the u.s.?
the Rift is already on retail sale in the US at many Best Buy locations at fewer Best Buy locations you can try a store demo unit out (there's a list of stores on Oculus's website)
Can someone give me a quick recommendation for or against vorpx? I'm finally done having fun with my fully vive supported room scale games and I'm ready to revisit some classics in VR. I keep getting told to get vorpx to configure most games to work with VR, and that it's just about essential for it. Initially I wasn't really interested in turning previously non-VR games to VR, but I recently tried half life 2 VR and had a lot of fun. I wanna play black mesa in VR, but apparently vorpx is the only way to go about that. When I started researching it, lots of people were saying "don't fall for the vorpx meme" or something along those lines, and I just generally started seeing a lot of people complaining about how it hardly works as intended. Seeing as it's $50 I wanna make sure I'm gonna get my moneys worth. Anyone have any advice, anecdotes or just general recommendations on it?
Games not designed with VR in mind won't be good in VR. If you've got cash to burn and don't mind poor but novelty experiences, go ahead. It just won't be what you hope for, after having experienced games properly designed around VR.

Would it be that much different to playing half life 2 in VR?
You lose all translational tracking and one axis of rotational tracking, so if you move your head wrong it can get extremely disorienting. If you're fine with half-life VR it's probably okay, but I recommend using the tridef demo first since it's free and uses the same methods as vorpx (although you need to tweak the settings and it's overall more kludgy)
Think of it like the "neat!" factor of using NVIDIA's 3D glasses with the fancy monitors that support it it's cool, but it isn't like having real VR games, and hardly any game works properly with it
VorpX is for people who hear about VR and go "wow i want call of duty in VR!!!!!!!!!!" Shit experience, don't buy it. Stick with actual made for VR games.
What about games like flight sims that support TrackIR but not VR? None of the major flight sims (barring DCS) are planning on adding VR support and I'm wondering what the best workaround is.
Poor cat.
Poor headset. Someone should tell him letting the sun hit the lenses will ruin the screens.

It's not 3d but the 3d software is honestly clumsy as hell and not worth using disclaimer: I don't own a headset so I'm talking on what I think I remember people here saying
iirc you can run vr headsets in direct mode to get them treated as an external monitor. It's not 3d but the 3d software is honestly clumsy as hell and not worth using disclaimer: I don't own a headset so I'm talking on what I think I remember people here saying
The mode that treated the HMD as another monitor was called 'extended' mode, direct mode was the new method where the GPU directly talks to the screen instead of through the OS. Oculus ditched support for extended mode long ago though, and it's not recommended to disable direct mode in SteamVR either. But none of that actually helps in bringing VR support to games that don't support it natively. Your best bet there would be third-party injectors like VorpX, but that doesn't hold a candle to native support either.
Poor headset. Someone should tell him letting the sun hit the lenses will ruin the screens.
Why do people tend to leave things that they put on their face, on the floor ?
Why do people tend to leave things that they put on their face, on the floor ?
To get it in shot for the camera?
That is a beautiful cat
Oculus has a promotion going on, every Rift ordered directly from their website before the 31st will have free shipping.
Woohoo! All my time spent on little VR side-projects has actually paid off! I'm joining the Modbox team and will be helping add a bunch of cool stuff like mesh editing and various gamemodes. Feels good to work on something that more than my immediate friends know about

Make it happen :magic101:

I thought this was supposed to be just batting virtual balls, but this looks like a full scripted minigame". Congrats srobins!
Found a WIP game called 'ShotForge', can't wait to assemble my own guns. Wanted something like this for the Vive for ages.
That looks so cool, god damn. If they add enough variety to targets and maybe add some kind of breaching map like H3VR, I'd be all over that.
Island 359 is up on Steam Early Access: http://store.steampowered.com/app/476700/ Basically Jurassic Park meets Vive shooter. Looks neat, heard some good things about its locomotion system, but with only 3 dinos and the whole early access thing, I think I'm going to wait and see how it develops first. Made by the same guys that did The Brookhaven Experiment apparently.
Just got my VR ready laptop (they even plastered that on the outside of the box), beautiful piece of tech. Thinner and lighter than my last one, and they got it to me unbelievably quick for something that was just released (I mean, I just mentioned it on this page). Will post about how well it performs later

[hd]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWwsaQdcPZk[/hd] I do like this locomotion system, and it seems Fallout is going to use something very similar for its own VR mode. [editline]23rd August 2016[/editline] "telerun with a stamina restriction" is how someone put it.
