Bad time to own a rift? Wonder how is this going to affect Rift users?
Bad time to own a rift? Wonder how is this going to affect Rift users?
it won't. Zenimax was awarded money for Palmer breaching NDA, which Facebook/Oculus will appeal to lower the ridiculous amount awarded. The court agreed that Oculus was innocent of misappropriating trade secrets, so Zenimax reserves the right to fuck off.
Wait... How can you use an equalizer to tune your audio closer to how things are supposed to sound? There's some amount of logic there that I'm not getting. Only thing I can think of is A/B testing against a calibrated system, but...
Probably not the best example, as it would require you to know what was used. Which would be nearly impossible. Either way, even with Studio Quality/Studio Headphones and a good setup, you're not guarenteed to hear the music "as the artist intended" Best example I can really think of was one of the more recent David Bowie albums. For some reason through multiple audio devices the music highly overpowered his vocals, almost making it sound like an instrumental. Some adjusting with an equalizer "corrected" that, though there is no real way of knowing for sure how it was "supposed" to sound. I can't remember what album it was, and I haven't had an issue like that with other music. That's enough of my off-topic. I would say for VR, studio quality headphones probably won't make much of a difference compared to say the built in headphones on the rift, or a good chunk of regular consumer headphones. Mostly due to the actual audio quality of the games and software.

Two players in rec room with the nicks "Depression" and "Anxiety" had some top quality banter going on.
starseed ep 1 is pretty cool but short if you know what to do. gives a myst vibe and the backpack is probably the best inventory system i seen in a vr game so far. i like after the credits in your basically trapped in floating platform rave hell till you quit the game edit:
Maybe, but still, Oculus lost. Meanwhile, HTC Vive is becoming the device of choice for enterprise developers…
The jury agreed that Carmack stole documents but that they also did not aid Oculus. Carmack said as much himself while testifying.
Wow, color me surprised that the Vive has 2x more units shipped than the Rift, I wonder if its thats from more enterprise purchasing?
Holy shit I had no idea GearVR was so popular. I'll be honest, I have no idea what it is other than that it's one of those things you put your phone in. No idea how it works, or what you can play on a phone
Wow, color me surprised that the Vive has 2x more units shipped than the Rift, I wonder if its thats from more enterprise purchasing?
Well, either way, looks there's actually someone to validate Sweeney's claim that the Vive outsold the Rift 2-to-1. http://www.pcgamer.com/tim-sweeney-claims-htc-vive-is-outselling-oculus-rift-2-to-1/ And the answer was probably indeed China and their VR cafes/arcades. Aside from that, it was pretty damn cheap and easy to get your hands on. A lot of people use it just for mobile VR porn :v:

Mostly due to it including a touchpad on the side, and having it's own sensors allowing for much lower latency headtracking.
Carmack posted his thoughts on the trial, for the parts that were relevant to him: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1913546895546485&id=100006735798590 He doesn't really like "expert witnesses" :v:
I mean there's nothing wrong with this, but why? As Palmer so savagely put: Apple does not make good computers. Literally none of their computers met min spec for VR last time it was looked into, they're all flashy exterior with the performance of an intel compute stick. You're purely adding support for hackintoshes at that point.
I mean... I'm using a 10 year old Mac Pro for my Vive, and it works fine. Granted its being dragged along mostly by the 980 its got in it, but still.
Wow, color me surprised that the Vive has 2x more units shipped than the Rift, I wonder if its thats from more enterprise purchasing?
China. HTC has that giant country's VR market pretty much under their control. Almost all Chinese users are Vive.
I mean... I'm using a 10 year old Mac Pro for my Vive, and it works fine. Granted its being dragged along mostly by the 980 its got in it, but still.
Yeah, I probably should have specified "as sold" (as I'm guessing the 10 year old tower didn't come with a 980 in it) but either way, point taken. You're also presumably running windows on it to play games though, and while it would be great if you didn't have to I imagine the market of people who ->bought a mac ->upgraded it (as none of them meet recommended spec as sold afaik) ->don't want to run windows on it for gaming is pretty small. I think some other posters made a great point though about it mostly being exploratory to make sure they won't run into big problems in the future though

Finally picked up touch controllers for the Rift! Pretty much just been rotating Gorn, Onward, and H3... I tried playing Meat Grinder but I was afraid of freaking out and running into something IRL. Anyone have any suggestions for solid exploration type games? The immersion of Meat Grinder H3 makes me want to play something like that but less terrifying.
Dreadhalls. Get it now.

I expect that, if the industry doesn't transition to an inside-out tracking method, Lighthouse might gain in favor with other headset manufacturers. Also, Oculus might want to begin looking at another tracking system for their next headset if they want to remain competitive. They're going to run into a hard bandwidth limit on USB headers, even with the 3.1 standard rolling out, especially if they intend to use higher-resolution tracking hardware in the future. The USB standard as it is today probably isn't ready for the intense demands placed on it by Oculus's sensors. It makes far more sense to have the headset track itself. Otherwise, if we see a spec bump in the sensors, any computer manufactured before this year would likely be totally unable to handle the system. We're already seeing these issues in three+-camera setups, which is why you have to plug one camera into a USB 2.0 port. Camera tracking can work, and it can be quite good, but they're going to have to do something about how much data they're pumping into the headers.

I don't know if the tracking can be done that way though.
