My favorite take on kobolds is the one from FATAL: Silver-skinned ugly, naked, cave-dwelling, rape slave midget people. Mostly because it's actually the closest a fantasy kobold got to its mythical Germanic origin. Less so because seeing pictures of them in FATAL is hilarious.

I know, they ought to be some of the most boring creatures ever.
D&D kobolds get a free pass, though; They kind of stray all over the place design-wise and only recently have they been kind of solidified as tiny wannabe dragon lizard things of various amount of muscle mass, ranging from manlet to scaled twig.
You know what kind of a mythical creature I'd totally approve of, though? Bell-Ringer demons. Describing one running at the player characters would be the most incredible thing.

Polymorph Self/Other are permanent until dispelled, aren't they?

Baleful Polymorph is, but almost all of the beneficial shapeshifting spells are either 1 min/level or 1 hour/level, as far as I know.

Nope. 1 minute per caster level.
The only option is to cast Baleful Polymorph on myself. I'm a little reluctant about doing that.

An 1 hour/level spell was what I was looking for, but only some of the partial transformation spells like Fins to Feet and Monstrous Extremities have that duration. When it comes to actual complete transformation spells, they're all 1 minute/level, with the one exception of Shapechange, the 9th level spell. It has a whooping 10 minutes/level.
