also just just throwing this out here, i really don't want to sound like cheap advertising: i do commissions and if you want i can illustrate your d&d related things (character portraits, scenes from an adventure, etc) for a fair and considerably cheap price.
That is very cool! Nice work! Out of curiosity, what would you start at for an uncolored character portrait, or even just an important item, like a magical shield?
In this style:
We really have to get back to Fallout at some point. We basically never even playtested the new rules, for how short of a time they were with us.

Yeah but tbh they're a giant mess (especially the recoil rules)
The good ol' eyeball method actually seems to have worked pretty decently but at its core the system is... not very good for tabletop and me caking on all kinds of rules made it even more complex
I still remember having fun playing though (whenever I wasn't blitzed or absent 'cause it turns out Friday night isn't a very good choice for game time when you've got IRL friends) so shit I might just be overthinking the whole thing :v:
also it desperately needs compiling everything into one book instead of having the core and a splat that overrides some rules but not the others but that's just a bit of tedium (and would require better publishing software - as in, something that's not LibreOffice Writer)
What's a good way to adjust encounters for dungeons where the players won't have time for a short rest in D&D 5e? Like, I think I get how to build single encounters that work out okay using the book, monster manual, and some encounter builders online, and the Adventuring Day info on page 84 of the DMG shows about how much experience the total encounters should add up to at the end of an adventuring day, but it also says an adventuring day should have two short rests. How should I adjust that for sessions that don't offer short rests?
Since a full adventure day is supposed to factor in two short rests (one at 1/3 of the way through the adventure, the second at 2/3rds), should a small dungeon that only offers a rest period after clearing it have a fair experience budget of just 1/3 of that?
For example, I've got a party of five characters at level 3. The budget for a full adventuring day, according to the book, would be a number of encounters adding up to 6000 exp, offering at least two short rest periods. So a small dungeon meant to be had in a single go, with a rest right after, should be budgeted for 2000 total experience. Or would that be too easy?
you're overthinking it mate

I got really worried with encounter building as well. I saw how you had to calculate it based on the CR ratings and exp totals of the monsters and so on, I was confused as hell. "How the hell would I balance this? What if I add too many or two few creatures to an encounter?" Was my constant thought, I even posted about it a while back asking for advice.
Then eventually after testing out a few encounters with my PCs I learnt and adjusted. As an example:
My guys found a lone Goblin Boss in a kitchen, it blew it's horn to call his buddies and rolled to see how long it would take for his buddies to turn up (I rolled 3 on a d4, so 4 turns). My players would have fucked the Goblin Boss within 2 turns because of the HP I rolled for him (They knocked more than half of it off within the first turn) and it would have made for a boring "Boss Fight", so what I did was bump up his HP and made his buddies turn up on the next turn.
This taught me that my encounters were actually weaker than I first thought and I need them to be stronger in some instances to make it a bit more intense for the players.
You can just change stuff on the fly if it will make the experience better for the players, that's what I learnt.
Another example is when the players were ambushed by a pack of wolfs that had a Giant Wolf leading them. I would have just let them kill the pack and be done with it but to make it more interesting I made the Giant Wolf howl when it was getting low on HP and call in some more wolfs.

2000 XP for one dungeon should be fine, but trust me don't use those rules too tightly, I tried to use them once and it completely ruined the feeling of one of the games I ran. Use it as more of a suggestion.
If you're placing hard encounters in your dungeons (e.g. ones with a high XP budget or which are likely to kill your players), then you should place less encounters overall (and go for a smaller XP budget overall), so that the characters have more of their abilities available when they get to the hard ones.
Hey, does anyone here play Dark Heresy 2nd edition? If so, would you recommend it? I've been very interested in Warhammer 40k for the past couple of years, and I finally feel like I have the minimum understanding of the fluff required to run a game in that setting, which would be badass.
But, I've heard mixed things about it, and just want to hear a players/GM's perspective on the game.
I've been playing in Cyclocious' DH2e campaign for over a year now, and I like the system. Of course, first edition has way more splatbooks, but it's easy to convert anything in them.

I like it. The aptitude system lets anyone spec into any role. My only problem is the lack of splatbooks, which will come with time.

As a GM for DH2, it's pretty simple. If you're jumping in for the first time, it's probably the best place to start. Of course, it's flawed and imperfect but it's good enough for running the type of games I want to run.
Its key differences from DH1 are: squashed down skills list (a good thing), various Quality of Life improvements from so many other 40k RPGs (a good thing), introducing an Influence and Subtlety stat (a good thing if you're not a fucking retard) and copy-pasting Only War's character creation (Your mileage may vary).
Basically, all PCs are made using a three-step system. You pick your homeworld, your background and your role in the team. Homeworld is stuff like "I grew up on a world where we all lived in a tree and I had to kill giant stone panthers with a sword" and background is stuff like "Well I'm a part of the Imperial church, I know the in's and outs of the system". Your role is stuff like medicae, warrior or assassin etc. They're pretty varied and there's flexibility within the archetypes. The problem is Aptitudes. Each step in this system gives you a few aptitudes (You're a good shot, you're adaptable etc). Every skill, talent or characteristic upgrade in the system has two attached aptitudes, possessing an attribute that matches one on a thing you want to buy makes that thing cheaper. An assassin has an easier time being more shooty or stabby then a greasy-smooth talker, fair enough right?
The problem is that the purchasable things are imbalanced, some aptitudes are near useless while others are utterly essential for certain things. And certain role's don't get aptitudes necessary to deliver on a players power-fantasy. For example, the "Ace" role, a role about being a sweet pilot and vehicle user, doesn't have both aptitudes to facilitate being a kick-arse pilot. He's paying as much XP to learn how to drive an APC as a Warrior has to pay to learn how to look scary and intimidating. Until a fix for this comes out, you may have to allow (on a case by case basis) PC's to swap Aptitudes if they find themselves gimped and they don't want to powergame it out.
Also, it's a 40k game. It's not balanced and the game seldom plays by the rules of its own setting. Astartes can die to a dirty knife and gangers and PCs alike can Matrix-dodge Sniper-shots from 500 metres away. Embrace it and have fun.
