So, I'm currently GMing a couple of beginner groups. We are using Pathfinder, since it's the system I own and am familiar with, none of the others knew what roleplaying was 'till I told them about it, AND I don't have the cash (nor really the desire, I mean, I've spent YEARS collecting PF books and playing the damn thing) to go and buy D&D 5th, which is currently seen as the best system to introduce people to the hobby.
Anybody here got any tips on how to best teach newcomers the game? I'm a bit nervous about them getting really tired of the rules, what with it being potentially a bit heavy for newcomers.
It's really the first time I'm running a game for people who haven't played a tabletop RPG before, so I'm at a bit of a loss.
You probably want to have a session where you teach everyone the basics and help them make characters, maybe print out some cheat sheets of the basic rules.
make premade characters and run a one shot game.
make premade characters and run a one shot game.
This would be the best while explaining rules, because you can show them the dangers they will face by killing off these premade characters at the end of the session. Make them fear you.
That feel when the treasure chest you go alone to get is the one with nice loot, and the one everyone else goes to get is the Mimic.
So, I begun GMing a game of Magical Burst. Bonus point for most of the players being female for maximum believability.
Begun by having one girl, Priscilla, (fun fact, I decided not go with Japanese city, so I can be lazy and not use the wacky Japanese in-jokes everywhere) become a hypochondriac due to finding a mysterious newspaper that detailed a disease whose symptoms she begun to have, although they disappear the moment she tries to really show them to a doctor. The fact that Priscilla is a Drama Club leader, does not help her position, either.
Another girl (Sal) was late to school, only to find that a clone of her got to the class first. After some airvent manuvering action, she did end up being caught in the hallway by Priscilla, who wondered how did her classmate leave the room despite sitting right next to her. Then que the clone walking in on both of them, Sal bluffing themselves as cousins, and clone running off, crying to the bathroom.
Considering that this was the first time anyone else beside me, played a Role-Playing game, it's a good start for them (even if not as exciting).
Then, another player (with some actual RP experience) wanted to join, so I had her play her own post-contract binding event. So, Elizabeth ended up getting the contract made on a remote park alley. After she transformed, a gunshot rang out from within the trees. So, being a smart little girl she... angrily shouted for the evil doers to reveal themselves. Despite Tsuikama's logical suggestion, she did not run off and decided to go invisible. When a mobster walked out of bushes in search of annoying high pitched voice of a witness, he obviously not found anything. Thus, Elizabeth, decided to use her unicorn horn sword as a club, to knock the guy off (and possibly out) and call the police (or something). Problem is, as it is with magic, it's hard to judge one's power, so she ended up slicing through the guy's kneecaps. Of course, clearly the first thought for an 11 year old girl is to shoot the guy whose legs she just delegated to a separation, with his own gun (to take him out of his mystery, so it's okay). Luckily for the victim, his buddy in crime decided to show up. Seeing a gun levitate upwards and aim for his friend's head, shook the guy, and apparently woke up his inner cowboy, since he shot the gun out of her hands, finally getting her to run away. Now, if only she did not forget her handbag on the bench. Although, considering the state of the two bandits, I think they have more important things to care about.
So yeah, that was fun.
Oh traveller chargen, how I love you so
So since we're doing this Star Wars game, and thanks to the lovely lovely charts we found which basically rewrite most every career's events to be more fitting for SW, my salvager-turned bounty hunter-turned smuggler had ended up with an astromech droid she'd had since her very first term
and, not having anything else to do tonight, I decided to build him and roll up his history, which turned out to be hilarious
his very first term, he misshaped and ended up memory-wiped on a strange planet, but with a full set of personality software that he didn't have before, and not recognizing his own serial number. Next term, which was our time working for jawas together, he accidentally intercepted a secret military transmission that he was never able to decrypt. Next term, while I was bounty-hunting about, he specced into slicing, and ended up engaging in some corporate work (boring) and arranging to kidnap a noble's daughter from her family at her own request, then got involved in (and won) a gambling tournament when my actual character was basically doing the same and just putzing about doing a galactic bar-crawl after she stole her first ship.
I'm pretty sure this qualifies my droid for more protagonist rights than my own character right now
Straight up archetypal star wars droid there, feckin mint. BTW rear was asking if I had any player connections, I know we humored the idea briefly but would you wanna figure a connection between the pilot and the wook wook still?
Yea, I assumed that was the plan. We can hash out details before/after Shadowrun tomorrow if you show up >:I

Shadowrun today
"Hm, we've discovered that we might be being hunted by a group of anti-runners for some reason, as we learned from having threatened it out of this janitor who was reporting on our movements."
"What's that guys sorry I'm gonna leave safety to go pick up girls."

Did he get the girls and were the girls, snipers?
Any spots for players open? No games booked atm (at least, none that are actually set to run any time soon, I have a party together that seems to be suffering from a lethal case of schedulitis.) Normally I bother Appy with these sorts of things, but considering that 75% of his players hate me (long story), I'm short on options :v:
Did he get the girls and were the girls, snipers?
He was talking to a girl at the moment he was sniped, yes
Since we wrapped up with the party getting an imagelink of him staring at his wound and then the sky before he passed out due to being 2 points into overflow, what the ultimate result will be is a question for next time
5e 3rd session of the campaign that i'm DMing
The Sorcerer was swarmed by zombies, and had half of his foot bitten off while being pulled up a tree. A few days later when the party is in a town he managed to amputate the rest of the foot and get it replaced by a metal prosthetic. Expecting him to try and fight by kicking with it.
I've been reading up on Degenesis, and god damn I am hooked on this setting.
If only I could lure my players to it too.
In last nights Demon game:
The players attend Dashcon 2018, a camp outside an old condemned Manor house in Hackney. They decide their pronouns and head in. Jace finds zimself in trouble, his dog is drawing attention while Uncle Sergei finds his daughter is sharing a tent and possibly pegging a guy. This all comes to a halt however as it is revealed that items of oppression are being burnt on a bonfire. Jayce throws his pets collar in, earning Tumblrs trust. Unfortunately, this item wasn't on the list and the fire hisses and spits, an Angel stepping from the cinders. Ended it there.

Live by the booty, die by the booty
[editline]14th January 2016[/editline]
Reminds me of something similar that happened in a game I was in actually, the whole team were hiding out in a secure safehouse, secure to the point where the walls blocked all signals and there was no matrix connection, which made the decker go stir crazy after a few days and break out. He got caught and squealed on us, we never saw that character again and their player rolled up another :v:
[editline]14th January 2016[/editline]
Now that I think about it, every time a team I'm in has gone somewhere with no signal, the decker cracks up.
check out what my players are going to stumble into next session (monday):

it's basically an illusion maze. each door leads to a different door. they'll have this little map which they'll find by looting one of the cultists of the dungeon. problem is mid way through the maze, skeletons of dead adventurers who got lost in the maze will rise from the dead to stop them from ever finding the exit.
cheat sheet is:
1A
4A
3A
5C
7A
8B
9A
if you're a dm and want to use this in an adventure go right ahead! just remember to share with us all how the players dealt with it :)
If you're gonna do that go the whole way and just make the dungeon a four dimensional shape like a tesseract.
nah, doesn't really fit what i'm going for with the adventure.
If you walk through 7B do you get instantly removed from existence?

I'm not gonna lie, if I was a player during this, I would get kind of tired of it sorta quickly. You should add something to spice it up!
all my gimmick minigame things because noticeably drab after the second round

Yeah add even more obstacles, that'll sure make it fun!
Looks fucking mint MenteR, though where the fuck does 7b go

I didn't say obstacle... just something minor like... perhaps the rooms' scenery changes every time you go through them. That'd give you incentive to keep going and see what weird shit changes.

And then you keep going, and going, just to see what happens, until eventually you blow up Boston.
Oh wait, that's me. :dog:
[sp]I kept stabbing an anti-AT field in AdEva with a knife, long ago. It was the first in a long line of incidents where my actions led to Boston being blown up or otherwise fucked in a bunch of games I played in with the same people.[/sp]
