Even then you only really need to have a general idea of how they work since you'll have the book near at hand. Once you learn the basic action resolution mechanics for things like initiative, combat, skill checks and difficulties as well as how to balance/create encounters you're pretty much set. The only shit I know from GMing D&D 5e for a couple of sessions about magic were the spells that the cleric was using regularly and the like 6 spells that my npcs had access to and things went smoothly enough. The best way to learn how to GM, is to GM. Your first session will probably suck when you look back at it a year in the future and you'll have made a whole pile of mistakes, but players should be forgiving and most of the time the mistakes you see go unnoticed. Unless of course you're completely clueless on everything and spend the entire session reading.
A fear of mine is that if i spend time writing character backstory, my pcs will ignore or kill said NPC. But i don't want to be too obvious with "maybe you should spare her because she may be important". Any help?
The trick is to never get attached to NPC's until the PC's get attached to them It worked for most of the characters in my Rogue Trader game Didn't really work for Shadowrun but I never expect anything in my shadowrun game

My antagonistic mega-bitch magical girl, who was nothing but cruel to the party, was assaulted with kindness on all fronts so much that she broke and eventually became a himedere rather than just an enemy. I created a recurring enemy to bother them at the most inconvenient times and they made her a friend. Like, you have honestly no idea how stubborn they were about befriending this bitch. At one point she superheated the tea in a PC's cup so hard that the cup exploded and the PC's hand was covered with third degree burns. Gritting through the pain, that PC then returned the extremely valuable stolen magical metal to this NPC - metal which that PC stole and held onto for weeks - then paid for both their drinks and walked away. That's some dedication.
Can anybody think of creative weapons/objects that would be good im certain instances? That immovable rod is a good example!

First time playing Fate core and boy, the game feels weird as shit. Maybe because I'm too used to systems like SPECIAL, D&D and savage worlds. Also I don't like how to PDF is organized, couldn't even find initiative rules :v:

Up there with Don't Rest Your Head, because of the whole "You define your own capabilities, but you don't apply hard numbers to them", which is the main issue I had with Mutants and Masterminds. IIRC you don't give your aspects hard numbers, even though you give a loose rating to some skills, in FATE core. DRYH fits what I mean a bit better, though. You give yourself 2 'talents' during character creation, one of which is something exceptional but mundane("I'm the fastest guy in the office!" or "I can crunch numbers better than anybody else on earth!"), the other of which can be as ridiculous as you want. Some examples from a companion book they put out are you/your character saying "Fuck" literally amplifying things("I can jump high as fuck"=You can literally jump past pluto if you want, "Shut the fuck up"=They will never talk again), and a Teddy bear voodoo doll-thingy that can mayhem(It gives an example of twisting the bears leg to make the subway crash, and another of ripping off an eye to cause a massive blackout).
A few weeks ago I grabbed a calendar because it was a new year and I thought I might organize myself. I used it to organize my XCOM campaign, because it takes place in 2016. I make good life choices.
If using a reaction to make an attack, do you only get one attack regardless of your level?

The one time I'm unable to show up to a session, the party almost gets TPK'd. Wonderful.
Sent my DM a quick summary of my character backstory and motivation because he was pretty high the last time I explained it. Kinda realized that all the relevant info could be condensed down to about 1 paragraph and that letting him fill in the details would be better.

3.5 master race
Also I went out and bought a HUGE dry erase grid map. Going to have lots of fun drawing dungeons and stuff on it.
This sessions of pathfinder The party comes across a small village in a world full of horrible monsters where not much civilization exists. They let them in on the promise that they run a quick errand for the Captain, who runs the town. They do so, come in, repair their weapons (Barbarian chipped his fighting some vines, somehow) and then set out to do the errand, which was to find a missing patrol. They find the patrol being eaten by some scavenging monsters, scare them off, and inspect the bodies. The necromancer believes the wounds are sword wounds. They go back to town, and talk to the Captain. They carry the bodies back into the middle of the town, then they notice no one is around. Suddenly, the blacksmith comes out from behind some buildings, and the town's militia draws weapons on them. Blacksmith is leading a mutiny against the Captain for some horrible choices he made at some point. Then, the Butcher (the wealthiest man in the village, has a monopoly on all the food coming through town) shows up, snaps his fingers, and the militia turn on the blacksmith. Then the party, of course, murders everyone except the Blacksmith and the Captain, chopping the butcher in half. The Ranger then, of course, decides to take the town over for himself, and attempt to arm all the villagers and make his own army to go fight off the monsters attacking his home. The ranger is having trouble figuring out how to arm and armor 80 villagers, and then train them, all the while keeping them fed. Don't know how this is gunna work out.

not too long ago the fighter in our party lost his greatsword after being captured by cultists (he had to leave for a while, and thats how we wrote him back in). Things got interesting when we reached the top of the tower we were in and he saw his sword on the back of the main baddy boss of the dungeon. He proceeded to grapple the leader, drag him over to the edge, hang him over the edge, and threaten to drop him if he didn't give back his sword. The leader laughed and he dropped him. The leader was, it turns out, a wizard. Who knew featherfall. So as the wizard boss started drifting down the fighter leaped off the tower, grabbed the wizard midair, and they both smacked into the ground. The wizard ran away and the fighter got his sword back. And we were all annoyed at him and the DM because the DM, surprised by his actions, focused on him for a while before we actually got started with combat (it was a surprise round)
Our party druid tried to convince me to take Champion for the crits on 19, and since I'm Half Orc I could have had mad crit damage thanks to Savage Attack. I chose Battlemaster instead because it sounded more interesting. During a combat encounter the magical helmet I picked up activated and sent my character into a blood rage. I ended up charging our druid and attacking him. I rolled a 19. We were both very happy I chose Battlemaster.

He turned around and literally eviscerated her - we got confronted by a 15ft guardian construct a wizard made. It didn't attack us while we were at a certain distance, so I just casted Mold Earth beneath it until it was trapped - I rolled a nat20 on a constitution save and still got hit for enough damage that 5 more damage would have killed me via massive damage from full hp
