The launch trailer reflects the general concept that we've known about for a while now (tho weirdly enough it doesn't seem to give the uninitiated any context), but I can't find anything specific about features. The ones listed on the storefront are about as generic as RTS features get. Based on that, not sure why anyone would pre-purchase this unless they've got blind trust in the pedigree/brand.
Kharak hype? Kharak hype. Like, I bought the Prospector's Gudie for Shipbreakers so I've waited for this for quite some time.
Also I wonder if they forgot the promise to hand out free copies of the game to those that supported Kharak when it was still Shipbreakers?
They're going to send them out at some point. They're working out the details for those who backed Hardware. So in the coming weeks they'll issue copies.
So Homeworld Remastered is $12 right now, how worth it is it? I'm still honestly pretty unsure how the game plays.
I got bored really quickly.
Remastered for Homeworld isn't as good as the original. You've got better visuals but a complete loss of all the mechanics that made Homeworld Great.
So Homeworld Remastered is $12 right now, how worth it is it? I'm still honestly pretty unsure how the game plays.
I think it's well worth 12 dollars, especially if you've never played Homeworld. It's a lot of game, and the Homeworld series is one of the best RTS series out there. Homeworld 2 is spot on and great. It was a good game when it came out and it still is. The story isn't quite as good as the original, but it's still an enjoyable experience and the gameplay is still good. Homeworld 1 is complicated. Aesthetically, it's a beautiful, authentic, and lovingly made recreation of what is in my opinion one of the greatest arguments for the silly games are art thing. The music is great, the story is great, the atmosphere is great, the art is great. It's all amazing. Gameplay-wise Homeworld 1 Remastered is... confused. Homeworld 1 Remastered is basically HW1 ported to the HW2 engine and consequently, the gameplay is weird. Core mechanics of the engines driving their respective games are fundamentally incompatible, so there's a lot of shoving square pegs into round holes when it came to HW1 Remastered. The gameplay is still fine mind you, but it's not the same experience as just playing the original game. Which, Homeworld Remastered includes. Not only does it have the Remastered versions of both the Homeworlds, but it also includes the original versions so if you disagree with how things were changed, you can just play the old games. If you get this, I recommend playing Homeworld Classic through first, then doing Homeworld 2 Remastered. There's too much special sauce lost in terms of gameplay when it comes to Homeworld Remastered in this Homeworld fanboy's opinion. HW2 Remastered is spot on though, as it's running natively in its own engine. Interestingly enough, after months of silence, Gearbox has been dropping some pretty big news that there's a humongous patch coming to the game sometime soon. Apparently in all that time, Gearbox kind of rewrote the core code for how ships fly in the Homeworld 2 engine. It's a pretty ridiculous thing for them to do, and I can't imagine how they even did it, but supposedly it's going to solve all those square peg in round hole problems. Here's the developer talking about it.
I can't go into details for many reasons... but think HW1 meets HW2 with new (better) stuff in the mix... 'stances'... um well, again, that is a bit hard to explain without releasing the patch. Certainly, in most ways that matter, the game can now play/feel like HW1, a bit less like HW2, and with new stuff which is neither, but is WAY BETTER. Here's a quote from a beta tester (somebody who hasn't seen any of our work for months, and just saw it today) - a member of the community which isn't allowed to talk about it until it's public. So, I'll say what they said for them ;) "WTF have you guys done? This isnt good, it is GREAT! It looks so good, and so smoth that i started to use hw1 hotkeys, i'm not kidding, it reminded me hw1 so much that i started to use the old hotkeys without realize... it is that good Congrats dudes, you guys nailed it!" Now, we're not done yet, and these comments aren't some sort of endorsement/promise - but they made me very, very happy. It is exactly what I wanted to hear after kicking this code around. I hope we hear it from many, many more people/critics soon ;) It is the same engine. It has new stuff that makes new things possible. In some cases, HW2 changes, but overall, it is largely the same. Behind the scenes the code is VERY different - but we had to rebuild on top of the code the stuff that made HW2 what it is (multi-ship Squadrons maybe the most obvious example). That said, when you want things to feel like/act HW1, they can more than ever before. And again - the changes go beyond either... some of the ways the systems have been created add new layers to old mechanics, stuff everyone who's tried it is very, very positive about. The goal is happy players - finally after months that goal is looking to be a bulls-eye shot ;)
HW: Remastered I can play only with correct mods which bring back the HW1 physics and tactics and so much more
yeah homeworld remastered is one of those games where the mods are essentially unnofficial patches to fix what's broken/missing in the base game the really got us with the hype train on remastered. i don't regret buying it at the full price of 40 bucks when it came out but it was definitely a lot less memorable due to the lack of smart squad/tactical ai
If that patch hits and does what it claims I'll be back on the hype train
If that patch hits and does what it claims I'll be back on the hype train
I'm actually quite thankful of this game and a few others for permanently banning me from all video game hype trains. Now I just get hyped for people and movies. Much less money on the line, much less waiting, much higher minimum level of enjoyment. Or maybe it really is possible to get bored of video games. Maybe the only games left that play are capitalizing on the reward pathways in the brain (unlocks, completion, etc) and social (playing with friends as something to do).
I got Homeworld Remastered largely because I love the game and want to see it thrived. While I was disappointed in remastered being more of a Homeworld mod for Homeworld 2, it still looked great and I pored many house into it. The big problem lies in the fact that Homeworld mechanics simply don't exist in Homeworld 2. Homeworld had simulated projectiles, dynamic unit behavior, tactics having an effect, armor facings and incredible battle chatter. Homeworld 2 on the other hand is just dice rolls, fixed unit behavior, tactics only affect engagement range, and battle chatter wasn't dynamic. In Homeworld, watching fighters dog fight could be an amazing visual experience. Fighters would actively dodge incoming fire on evasive tactics to stay alive longer, on neutral they would try and dodge following a pass, and on aggressive they wouldn't try and dodge and instead just keep their guns on target for as long as possible. Fights had tons of life and action to them. And the battle chatter was amazing. Each voice had more then 1500 lines in response to every situation imaginable. Ships could report their situation on the fly, would alert to losses and could tell you exactly what was happening around them. The battle chatter system was actually so advanced, it had to be scaled back to save on memory. There's 400 or so unused ship lines. Lines range from calling out the exact ship they're attacking to being attacked by (or the ship naming its self as under fire), more situation response lines such as frigates going down (A group would report its losses instead of fleet command), death cries, and even reports of hull integrity. Homeworld 2 though? Nah, ships just attack in a fixed pattern, roll some dice to see if they hit, then die real fast. Battle chatter was just fixed line responses to being under attack and when they take damage. Even with mods you can't quite get the original Homeworld experience out of 2. The engine simply doesn't support those things. Modders have done their best to simulate it, but it just isn't the same. You really have to play the original for the true experience. Also can't forget how much Homeworld 2 fucked up the canon.
For now, play HW1 then HW2 remastered. Since they're supposedly going to be fixing strike craft behaviour, it might be worth waiting to play HW1R
Got this in my mail last night! [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/71236376/HARDWARE%20Shipbreakers/BBI%202016-01-09.png[/t] I knew this was gonna turn out awesome when I bought the Prospectors Guide!
The last trailer doesn't show much gameplay:
10 days are left. This is going to be good, or terrible. We'll have to wait and see, but you know what? I Trust them. I wish I'd have had the money for the prospector's guide back at the time it was up. Not that it matters much in a ground based game, but they have simulated projectiles for all weapons that don't travel at super speed. So you'll be able to outmaneuver artillery and missiles.
I haven't played a ground RTS game since C&C:RA2 was given for free at Origin, so I will definitely give it a try. I really hope that if the plot is not good, at least better be the gameplay. I don't wanna another Endgame (<-really bad game) sitting at the bottom of my library.

As well as TA which SupCom was a spiritual successor to, and that's one of the things that helped set it apart from other RTS games.
New trailer with new bits of gameplay.
The few action shots made me think of Ground Control, which was a damn good RTT. So that's pretty good.
This is going to be a rough four/five days. It also looks like they don't have the advanced construction arrays of Homeworld era like people though. Doesn't look too far off from a modern assembly line, it's just piecing together parts they already have instead of micro-fabricating everything.
Makes sense to me, IIRC Kharak's leap in technology came about after the Khar-Toba was salvaged.
Makes sense to me, IIRC Kharak's leap in technology came about after the Khar-Toba was salvaged.
It's said in the intro to Homeworld 1 that most of the high-tech stuff came from constructing the mothership. I still like their whole "low-end high-tech" aesthetic with the hover units though. Makes everything feel like it's actually bleeding edge tech and not just a retcon.
Well it's explained as Gaalsien has just spent the last 400 years out there and have had plenty of time to learn from the wrecks themselves. They've got the most advanced stuff because of it. So none of their work was really developed in kiith. The rest of the Kiith are using what they developed themselves. They Kiith are supposed to have a technological level on par with our own. All the big tech leaps came from reverse engineering what was found in the Khar Toba (which they got fusion tech, advanced life support, material knowledge, advanced power sources, and most of all, hyper space). The advanced micro engineering came from their own development in order to build the mothership. They basically invented giant 3d printers.
It looks like there's some sort of physics for those buggy-vehicles driving on the ground. Unless its just really good animations
Video on the last page mentions vehicles actually have simulated physics.
