The Remastered models are really fucking good. They did an ace job with redoing them. Screwing up the art style was actually my biggest fear going into Remastered and lo and behold it's one of the couple things that they absolutely nailed. Completed the game recently. [sp]I love how the Galciien religion has deified the Taiidan edict, the prohibition on hyperspace travel, having been turned into a religious proclamation, that the fires of god will descend upon Kharak if the Kushan ever seek the stars. That was just a great touch.[/sp]
The ships in remastered are so much better than the ones in Desert of Kharak that it almost hurts. You can see the new game's mobile roots with the low-poly models and plain textures everywhere. I've pretty much had the opposite experience as you and I'm mostly disappointed with most of the visuals in the new game. They consulted with the old artists and concept designers on how the ships would have looked like had they didn't have the tech limitations back then.
There are zero assets from when the game was going to be a mobile game, because no actual game assets were ever made. They went for a more simplistic look with this game. They wanted a very to the point, simplistic style, but it looks great still. It's quite a colorful game even with the limited terrain pallet. They made some fantastic looking deserts. Now there are some visual problems, but this is still a great looking game. And every ship in remastered was looked at and approved by Rob and Aaron. Gearbox's artists built new models over the old ones, then worked on detailing them from there. Homeworld 2 was much easier, since they didn't have to remake anything. They just up-resed and painted over the original textures, and added normal maps.
Wow, you can't even buy the soundtrack without owning the game
Well I think my brute forcing of the hw2 campaign has come to an end, I'm at a level where I have to stop them from destroying something and because I've jumped in with at least a hundred ships, the dynamic ai has about a dozen battlecruizers sitting on top of the objective and about a hundred frigates as well, so I'm going to have to go back 1 level, scuttle my entire goddamn fleet, then jump in and build like a lot of ships b4 the Ai does anything
Well here's some footage of the majestic land carrier. I love that despite its huge size, it still bounces off the dunes.
Awww, you didn't record when your carrier got stuck ontop of a dune? :v: Also, how the hell did you disable the HUD?
Ctrl h [editline]23rd January 2016[/editline] I wish all games had either a key to take hudless screenshots or a key to disable the hud Going through options or using the console is annoying

Can't you also scuttle your fleet and rebuild it with the resources you got?
Can't you also scuttle your fleet and rebuild it with the resources you got?
You can do, but some missions demand immediate action or the mothership or objective dies
Well bought this and played a couple levels. Got my carrier destroyed because it turns out it's not clever to use it as the spear of your army. Not yet at least but I'll make it work.
I'm having trouble with Mission 12 (Galactic core) in Homeworld 1 RM. My fleet destroys the enemy grav-well generators too fast, preventing some trigger from activating leaving me stuck on the first objective. I've tried moving the entire fleet away from them at the very start of the mission, but whatever I do the grav-wells will all die simultaneously, I think it happens when I destroy the last frigate of the initial enemy attack.
Do you get attacked by more Taiidan units after about 10 minutes? You should still have waves of Frigates, destroyers, and two cruiser show up. If not, go find and kill the carrier. The mission is only really bugged if nothing happens after you wipe out the Taiidan fleet.

The AI basically fucking dies beyond that point, the carrier group in the centre of the map doesn't react to my ships in any way until they're fired upon
this is a dumb mechanic
Homeworld 2's mission scaling was just all kinds of broken. Homeworld has scaling difficulty by fleet size, but it's linear and has an end point. Take mission 3 for example. If you have under 15 ships, you'll only be greeted by two assault frigates. But if you start the mission with a lot of ships, you can be greeted by up to 5 assault frigates. Only a few missions had scaled fleets enabled. The only ones I can recall off my head are 3, the one with the Head shot asteroid, and the number of Multibeam frigates you will encounter in the Garden. Homeworld has a minimum encounter number and a maximum depending on your fleet size. If you do poorly and have few ships, you'll fight less. But if you do well and have a ton of ships, you'll fight more, to a point. This ensures there's always some level of challenge without being too much. Homeworld 2 on the other hand uses exponential scaling based on fleet size. You'll encounter exponentially more enemy depending on your fleet size and it has no upper limit. Balcora gate is the worst offender here, because you can encounter as many as THIRTY battle cruisers and the gate will get shredded in seconds. More or less, for every one frigate you have, the enemy will have two. The difficulty scaling of Homeworld 2 was just awful. But, it's a victim of the fact that Homeworld 2 was a badly rushed game that was thrown together quite quickly. You can thank Sierra for that. Homeworld 2 began development in 1999, and was due out in 2002 (This was Dust Wars), then Sierra canceled it. Relic ended up dumping much of the work they'd done, including the engine, which had suffered from a number of technical problems. Sierra renewed the project some time late in 2001/early 2002. Homeworld 2's engine was thrown together quite quickly, which is why it's full of so many bad or poorly done features (Such as the RNG weapons and broken movement system).
I remembered that the book included with the copies of Homeworld had a section devoted to the clans of Kharak, pulled mine out and was pleased to see that the Gaalsiens were in there. I guess people already know this, but I thought it was interesting. The lore doesn't match up from what I've seen so far in the game though.
well homeworld doesn't say there wasn't more than one spaceship on their planet, buuuuut ya they're not pretending that the lore matches what the game says. the original homeworld says they only discovered it after just achieving a satellite in orbit, while the deserts of karahk clearly shows they have much better tech than that
Well it wasn't their first satellite. They discovered metallic debris in orbit during their first space flights back between 1024 and 1050, and during their first space walks brought back fist sized pieces of this debris. And that's in the old lore. The Satellite launched in 1106 that detected the Khar-Toba wasn't meant to scan the planet or even the orbit. It was meant to scan the entire system in search of larger debris or even an intact ship. The debris belonged to the other 4 prison ships, who broke up on entry, or crashed to the planet and had no survivors. All the other new ships, and the Gaalsien stuff is new lore. They amended the historical guide for resmasterd to add that the satellite detected hundreds of objects in the desert, with the Khar-toba being the largest and having the strongest return. The Gaalsien war is a bit weird too. The manual said there hadn't been any major wars since the Heresy wars, but there had been a number of conflicts, which lasted until the Guide Stone was found. This whole thing seemed a bit more then a conflict, it was most certainly a war, unless you're going to go with the idea that Tiir wrote it off as a simple conflict.
Another odd thing about the Gaalsiens per the manual was that their religious beliefs stiffed their technological innovation, whereas in DoK they're more advanced than everyone else.
Another odd thing about the Gaalsiens per the manual was that their religious beliefs stiffed their technological innovation, whereas in DoK they're more advanced than everyone else.
That was explained as they took the tech from the wrecks, and they were known to have raided science outposts, and abduct scientists. All their fleet was built in secret, probably using a mix of salvaged and stolen tech. In all likelihood, they probably barely understood how it worked. I also love the scale of Homeworld. The land carriers are huge ships, yet, they're only the size of a frigate when it comes to space craft.
Not to mention the fact that the whole conflict of DoK revolves around the Gaalsien not letting anybody into the wrecks.
Finally beat DoK and now I can read all the spoilers. Most of what I wanted to ask about that I found weird has already been discussed, so I don't have much else to say. Overall I really liked the campaign. It was definitely everything I wanted in a game that's basically Homeworld but in a desert. My biggest gripe with it though is the almost Halo 2-esque ending in terms of abruptness. It feels like they ran out of time with how suddenly the game ends. With how the last mission ends, I would have liked if there was a short non-combat epilogue mission, but at the very least, a longer ending cinematic would have been more satisfying. At least you don't have to wait 3 years to Finish the Fightâ„¢.
Finished the campaign, loved every aprt of it even tho I'm not that deep into Homeworld or its lore. Def. one of the better RTS campaigns I've played. Although I must say I have trouble keeping tabs on all the names, especially Kiith-related ones. (Didn't realize each Kiith was a clan that specialized in different areas and vehicles untill I noticed that veteran crews all had the same last name per vehicle type.)

That happened to me too, only i think more or less dramatic. At some point i just noticed the Kapisi slowly descending from orbit. And plucking down ever so gently upon the sand.
Kapisi realizes it's in a homeworld game.wmv Someone get me the model for it. If you can get me the model, I'll put it in the right place.
then replace the Kapisi with banana as soon as DoK mods become a thing
