As absolutely insane as I am for Monster Hunter, I admit it's one of those love it or hate it type things. And I don't know your tastes, so I'm not sure what parts of Monster Hunter you thought was boring. BUT I will say what I personally love about Monster Hunter (...3 Ultimate I mean. Sorry still fairly new to the series)
Going from a big monster hunt to skipping through the meadow grabbing more herbs and mushrooms for potions does seem like kinda of a lurch, and seems like something that would be incredibly boring. But I think it adds a lot to the experience. You're getting more stuff you'll need later through gameplay, rather than grinding for money and buying it en masse from the item shop. I also find it very relaxing, either winding down from a difficult hunt in solo, or doing a gathering mission online with my brother, talking about stupid shit while fighting off asshole Jaggi that won't let us gather things in peace.
The whole game has this joyful and almost whimsical energy to it. Unlike other games with a huge overarching story saying why the monsters are bad or contriving story elements saying you're the chosen one or whatever, you're just some fop fresh off a boat to hunt monsters. It's your job, plain and simple, and I feel your character's animations helps drive that point home. From calmly rotating your BBQ spit to literally jumping into bed to save, you don't get the feeling that you are being rushed to fight some big nebulous evil. It's just how you make a living.
ANd of course it wouldn't be Monster Hunter if I didn't talk about the MONSTERS. God damn, it scratches the same itches Dark Souls did for me. You fight a big monster that's much stronger than you, and you have to have a plan to your attack, rather than spamming the attack button and hoping for the best. And as you learn how to fight these monsters you start to learn their tells, and what kind of attacks they'll employ. You get better over time by getting good at the game, rather than gaining experience and being told you are good enough to fight bigger monsters. I recently made a brand new character in MH3U, and when I got to a mission that surprises you with a Lagiacris I used my knowledge fighting it as my more experienced character and fought way better than when I did that mission before, managing to cut off it's tail and nabbing some Lagiacris scales before I had to run away for the sake of not failing the Quest.
Speaking of "similar to Dark Souls", one of the biggest draws for me is how in-depth the character customization is. This is one of those games where you can't sell ANYTHING: Almost every item has some use, even if it comes much later in the game. You can take simple plants and objects you find and turn them into traps, gathering items, healing items, and such. And hides and scales from monster hunts can be crafted into an INSANE number of armors and weapons you can make. I didn't mind having to fight a monster multiple times because I want to work to get it's armor set, or build the Nibblesnarf's Heavy Bowgun cos it looks like a grenade launcher. With different armor sets, weapons, and skills you can use, there's a lot you can do to make your hunter just the way you like it. You can wear a full armor set of the same armor pieces to gain skills that you want to use, or you can wear no clothes at all except a Great Jaggi Head cos you think it's funny. As long as you can make it work, anything goes in Monster Hunter.
Sorry if this got kind of overlong and rambly, but god damn I regret not playing a Monster Hunter game before MH3U. I understand if you find parts of it boring, or were put off by the incredibly boring tutorials at the start of the game. But I feel it's an amazing game, and everyone should at least give it a fair shot.
Thanks for this. I was already thinking about picking this up next month alongside MM 3D, and you kind of pushed me over the edge to give it a shot.
Ok so having never played Monster Hunter, the demo is really fun. I played the demo to the MH3 back in the day and i couldnt get into it. This though was awesome. I wish they had a WiiU version.

See, I dunno. At first glance I thought Monster Hunter would be awesome, but having played the demos for both 4 and 3U, and owning 3U on Wii-U, that's exactly all I do. I try to play more strategically, but the controls feel so clunky that I just can't do much other than keep attacking over and over and occasionally using different attacks. I played the demo with my friend and it was still the same. We'd just chase the monster, spam attack, chase the monster, spam attack, and occasionally stop and attempt to run away to lay a trap for no real reason.
I was thinking about getting MH4, if I could get my friends to go along with it because I don't think I'd have any fun in Single Player. I think I'll give 3U another chance, as well, though I don't think I can have much fun since none of my friends have a Wii-U. I don't think I made it very far, the tutorial segment turned me off big time. Thanks for your post though, I was thinking about asking the same question. It's a game series I REALLY want to like, but I can't seem to have fun with it. The demo for MH4 is... enjoyable? But like I said, it just amounts to chase, attack, chase, attack. It doesn't really even feel different playing different classes. And the controls, while they're a step up from 3, are just really clunky feeling.
Like I said, I want to like this game, so if I'm just sort of missing something here I'm open to opinions.
I don't get how you think it doesn't feel different to play with different weapon classes, at all.
But I'm a bit too lazy to write out an "essay" on why they're different etc... :v: But it's still very in your face, every weapon will have a specialization, hammer? you knock shit down so other players can whack at it freely. Bow? You provide support from the back or up the ledges (Although in MH3U the bow with the explosive arrow coming from above did more harm than good, throwing other players around like they were toys) Sword 'n Shield is the basic, do-it-all-but-not-as-good-as-the-others weapon. And so on and so on... I think the problem right now is the lack of synergy from what you're picking as a class to your friend's.
So, I've been told that the 3DS only supports certain SD cards. Does anybody know if this one would work okay? http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00M55C0NS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
Planning to get use it with the adapter for my current XL then ditch the adapter when I upgrade to a new XL. Am I right in assuming I should be just fine?

Yup that will work. I have almost the exact same one.

Fantastic, I've ordered it.
I wasn't gonna upgrade my SD card for a good while but Shin Megami Tensei IV is on sale and it needs 12,000 more blocks than I have free. And hey, doesn't hurt to be prepared for future digital exclusives. :v:

Agreed. Monster Hunter 4 just feels like a huge improvement over 3. Maybe if enough people buy it Capcom will consider it? "Monster Hunter Not-So Portable 4rd Ultimate" is still a better name than whatever that over the top DLC for Dead Rising 3 was called

Got this in the mail today. Really wish NoA decided we were worthy enough for the n3DS too...
Got the LE of Senran Kagura 2 with it on sale for ¥3700.
woo big paycheck coming in on wednesday, I can pick up a N3DS and preorder MM and MH.
I tried Monster Hunter for like 10 minutes on the PSP years ago and I didn't like it. Maybe I will try the demo on the 3DS to see if maybe this time it's different.
I just hated how the weapons decay with use, and that you can't just go and kill stuff from the get-go.
Ok so how come my gf and I could not beat the Tetsucabra on beginner? It looked like my character didnt do a damn thing to it but hers did. Is there a reason for that?

Kinda wish the New 3DS XL Buttons had the same SNES color button.

depends on where you were hitting it, and with what weapons

some weapons do more damage, some weapons do less damage
some weapons do cutting, some do impact
some have elemental damage, some do not
Weird because i was hitting him there and my attacks were jusst t bouncing off of him.
Weird because i was hitting him there and my attacks were jusst t bouncing off of him.
was your weapon sharp enough?
some animals require green sharpness to penetrate their skin, some are fine with yellow most of the time.
impact can often bounce off with yellow sharpness as well
There's a couple new themes if you're into those sort of things, blue camo colored Mario characters and green ones. The theme it uses is the Underground theme from Super Mario Sunshine.

were you using charge blade? (im not sure if switchaxe does this as well but...)
because charge blade will bounce off the monster if the vials below the health bar are red. at max, the word "CHARGE" will show up next to those vials. you have to charge the weapon by pressing R+A at the same time.

weapons still decay with use (but whetstones are easy to come by and super cheap. you should always carry 5~ with you) but it's not permanent decay. in the full game, if it's anything like how mh3 was, also won't let you kill stuff from the get go. but apparently the tutorial stuff is skippable (for the most part) in this game
Can someone repost that comparison of the screen sizes between the 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS and New 3DS XL?

The 3DS XL and New 3DS XL have the same screen size.
so the N3DS is slightly wider than the old 3DS? This is good because it was just a little too small for comfort.

SD cards tend to be very resistant to all of the above, regardless of brand.
It's longevity you have to look for. write cycle limits are card killers.
Holy shit. Brit friend of mine just told me there are emerging cases of micro SD cards melting inside of the ambassador N3DS
It's purportedly linked to playing certain intense games from the SD card while charging for several hours straight, the system gets hot enough in close enough proximity to the card to start warping and deforming it
[editline]t[/editline]
I'm pressing him for pictures or links, if he can't provide either by tomorrow I'll assume it's either isolated or fake and snip. Just posting it now to be on the safe side.
What would be a 'intense' game?

[editline]t[/editline]
It's possible that it happens because of certain microSD cards being made of cheaper plastic with a lower temperature threshold.

Yea i would imagine any decent sd card would be made out of plastic that could withstand decent temps
Back in 2009 I had a mini flash drive melt/distort internally to the point of unusability (following nearly 7 straight hours of R/W), so from my experience it doesn't seem totally implausible.
Some brands just care about cheap, and will cut a lot of corners to achieve that. Be sure to read reviews when buying storage media.

The Ambassador N3DS comes with a Toshiba microSD, if I'm not mistaken.
You'd expect their cards to be of OK quality.
