Yeah, that feature is obviously built entirely for the Japan-only Collectible Badge Center, so you can build multiple scenes out of the badges and save them all. In the Japanese version of the update, you can also set badges as folder icons instead of the single-letter default.

They really need to bring this 'game' over to the west already. I've been collecting all of the badges and they've already released way over a hundred. That'll be a hell of a lot of catching up to do for the west.
Is one of those icons for badges of consoles? A little NES badge would be a lot better on my folder than a big "N". I would love for this system to come to the rest of the world.
Now that I have both a Wii U and a 3DS, this is the most I've been anticipating a Nintendo Direct. Hoping it still happens this month.

The thing works with infrared and so does the Wii U gamepad, so theory says it should work as a reader given the right settings. I believe it's just a matter of time.
No, the gamepad doesn't work via infrared. It has an IR emitter, but that's solely for the TV remote functionality; it's too low-frequency to serve data transfer purposes.
The way it communicates with the WiiU is through a combination of bluetooth (controls and touchscreen) and proprietary short-range, high-throughput wifi (video feed)

I thought the gamepad used straight wifi for everything?

Oh.
I'll be in the corner of shame and misinformation if anybody is looking for me

The entire reason why the system only supports up to seven wireless controllers is because the bluetooth standard the WiiU uses can only communicate with eight devices at once.
Gamepad takes up one of those eight slots at all times, so that leaves seven.

Wikipedia says the limit is 7 per bluetooth network, the gamepad's page lacks anything saying it uses bluetooth, and this doesn't require a bluetooth module.
TL;DR: It doesn't use bluetooth.

Might be a little too late for this month- early april definitely, because there's quite a lot of things they need to talk about (Splatoon, Mewtwo, probably sticker badge game).
Needed a 3DS case, managed to get this one for $9.99.

Yeah, there's a Famicom badge series. There isn't much in it right now (the system, the controllers, and a few cartridges), but I don't doubt that they'll do other consoles eventually. Definitely pinning my Famicom badge to the VC folder.
So rumor has it...

It looks so real, but then again after the Rayman fake I really don't know what to believe any more.
I remember that Rayman thing for Smash. I wasn't keeping up with Smash news at the time so I wasn't too involved, was the Rayman 'leak' really quality?

Please
PLEASE be real
Cool, we'd finally get a Paper Mario game on the 3DS.
Until proven to be real, this will forever be a fake to me. I will never have faith again.
Knock on wood, but 3DS has seen a lot of remakes from N64, like Starfox and OoT, and Paper Mario (I assume) wasn't too intense to run on GC, only having a higher video quality and updated visuals. I could see TTYD3D happening.
Only problem is TTYD3D is too much acronym.
I'd expect a remake of the original Paper Mario to be released before a remake of The Thousand Year Door.
I'd rather have it on Wii U tbh.
I'd expect a remake of the original Paper Mario to be released before a remake of The Thousand Year Door.
To be fair, a port of TTYD would take less effort to make look good on a 3DS as a remake of 64 would probably need to overhaul all of the textures and possibly some models.
Also, TTYD is the only one that can't be played on current Nintendo hardware in any form.
Also, TTYD is the best Paper Mario game
Also, TTYD is the only one that can't be played on current Nintendo hardware in any form.
Now I'm curious... I played it but that was a long time ago.
Might if I ask why?
Now I'm curious... I played it but that was a long time ago.

Because Wii U doesn't read GameCube discs.
By "current hardware" he means Wii U and 3DS

Paper Mario is accessible on the Wii U via the Wii Mode's Virtual Console, Super Paper Mario is playable in Wii Mode, Super Star is of course made for the 3DS.
Gamecube is the odd man out right now for this gen, which is made even stranger since the Wii architecture inside the Wii U has been proven to be capable of reading Gamecube discs using homebrew, which leaves into question why they would bother not to keep Gamecube ports in the first place (especially since when Gamecube games appear on the eShop eventually, they'll surely work like the Wii eShop download games by using the Wii hardware and not by being emulated).

I actual prefer the slight dirty and low-res textures of PM64 than the shinyness of TTYD.
Oh. I thought it had something to do with the controller, like Sunshine remake being tricky or impossible due to the lack of pressure sensitive bumpers for FLUDD mechanics.
This whole thing reminds me of the day I got a bundled Wii that had no GC ports but still displayed the GC disc logo when no disc was inside. I blessed my older self for not selling my Gamecube. I felt cheated that day.

While that's fine, that's already an option via the VC and I'd like to see PM64 with the visual quality of the boxart:
