The only things I've edited in the INI so far is one, the airgame so now I have tiny repair, rearm, refuel and rebase times and two, the XCOM base assault so I only pick 8 instead of 12 troops because fuck the idea of RNG for your deployment, that's like being able to die in character creation in an RPG.
I think the really shitty thing about LW is that it seems you have to know goddamn everything, when to build X building, what order and how to build your troops, what research is most efficient and so on so forth. And on top of that you need to hope that you don't get a shitty alternate start location on a map with 1 cover spot and a pod of Muton Elites/ Berserkers within spitting distance of you. Also the game punishes you for doing too good, if you keep pissing the aliens off they start to send out sat hunters without scouting for them first. In short, a lot of LW's problems I think stem from trying to do too much in a system that wasn't meant to accommodate it.

What are they, Bethesda? Can't finish the game, so let the modders do it?
Turtles all the way down, man!

Breaking news from our benevolent overlords the Advent administration: XCOM accused of collapsing orphanages in an attempt to wound innocent babies, their caretakers and anyone else unlucky enough to get in the way of their bloodthirsty rampage, we now go to our Sectoid-on-the-scene, reporter Glipglop!

they don't? they just say you can mod it yourself
If I wanted to mod the game myself, I would mod the game myself. I don't think it's too much to ask for a mod who's goals are REBALANCING THE GAME to do well at rebalancing.
Completed it on Impossible and didn't really have much trouble. I guess it depends on your experience with X-Com itself and how good you are at these kinds of games.
Like I played so much of the Original X-Com over god knows how many years I can complete Superhuman with absolute ease.
So in the end. Varies from person to person.
I never played Xcom before, and I'm pretty slow and reckless with strategy games, proven with Company of Heroes and Command & Conquer.
I'm beyond fucked.
Those are real time strategy, all offense in rts is reckless
does anyone have an up-to-date tech tree pic for long war?
decisions decisions

I don't know what happened to the wizardly RTS skills I had when I was 14. I'm terrible with micro these days.
Christ, I go to bed and wake up to a whole page of Long War.
Long War's fun to people like CGNick from what I've gathered just because they're ready for that level of challenge and insane odds stacking
Long War was fun for me at about Stage 12 or 13 of it, then it just started shitting on the player more and more, especially with more aliens per map and Robot DR being ridiculous. There is good reason I went for that "Ballistics only" challenge for vanilla, cause at least that feels more rewarding and more like an actual challenge, compared to Long War where you get kicked in the nuts for not following a meta now.
...Speaking of which, I'm thinking of doing a pistols only challenge, wondering how that'd go.
Some times I wish the soldier nicknames were not just randomly generated, but actually were relevant to what the soldier do. I wouldn't mind if it kept the naturally occurring nick a few ranks up, just so we can see the unit be named properly. Well, that, or MGS-styled alternative nickname system.

The minigun showoff on the site seems to have attachments of some sort.

The one from PAX was pure ballistic with no attachments, this one appears to have a box mag with some form of special ammunition and something on the top rail of the gun, which I can't really make out what it is.

This will be the last real analysis post of the thread, as this is one of the last releases that won't be spoilerriffic:
- The two different sides of the upgrade path enhance direct fire and AoE weapons respectively; the implication is that the focus for either path is greater. The AoE path is named Demo Expert
- Secondary weapon on the Grendadier is described as a 'cannon', giving an insight into later weapon developments for the class. Presumably the Shredder Cannon is one option for this slot.
- One ability on the DE path is Salvo - allows Grenade or Heavy weapon (Grenade launcher, cannon) use without ending the turn
- Other abilities described as being available to 'heavy gunners' - presumably the other side of the tree:
Shredder - described as an attack designed to disintegrate heavy armor
Rupture - 'critical damage' attack causing target to take more damage from future attacks - Implication that Armor system is different from EU.
I will be interested in seeing any non-spoilery gameplay (aka, minimum of new aliens or technologies) videos that are posted though. PMs about such will be appreciated, as I will not be in the thread after this post to avoid spoilers.

We do know that one Proving ground project type is different ammo types.

I share this sentiment but not to the extent of leaving the thread. I mean February is nearly five months away.
It shouldn't be too hard for this thread to come up with a few basic lines for what is and isn't spoilers.
I mean we're all ██████████ so we should be good at this censorship stuff already.

Don't dash into fog of war, for god's sake don't dash into fog of war. In fact, don't dash unless you're running away or REALLY need that meld canister.
This is a mistake I still make sometimes and I have 209 hours in the game.

I make the mistake of thinking "This dash will only reveal a few tiles of fog, so its a safe move".
There are always enemies.
Always.
Don't be reckless. Play it safe.
But sometimes, you need to bet everything on a 19% chance to hit because it's either that or lose and sometimes, the RNGs will bless you and allow you to hit and crit and turn the tide of the battle.
my rule #1 of XCOM EU
never reveal line of sight except with the first move you make that turn, which means all your troops follow in the footsteps of the first guy to move

rule number 2 anime sucks
Friend of mine brought up an interesting idea, having subsets in the character pool so you can specify groups you want used. Like the cast of a TV show, political figures or celebrities.
I wonder what happened to Vahlen in 2
This thread has got to be the most supportive of new people to the game I've seen on FP.
So, I've beaten the game Iron Man and enjoyed the lot of the game and hardest difficulty and such. Is long war worth the pain?

The devs specifically state on the mod page that it's for people that have beaten the game on Ironman and the hardest difficulty a few times, so it's perfect for masochists like you.
According to the unreleased book, there will be an ADVENT unit that is somewhat large in comparison to their normal counterparts, and has the ability to erect barriers as cover.
Deployable low cover would be cool
