has there ever been a game where the workshop is better than whatever third party mod sites
If you ask me? Arma 3 has had some great mods which adds truckloads of new content being at the same level of detail as the basecontent. (Example would be the RHS US Air Force or RHS Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.)
So basically the aliens looked at the Floater and were like "Hm... That shit isn't all that PR friendly" and went with a massive redesign that basically makes it look far more visually appealing.
also dem abs.

My bet is a S.H.I.S.
So, this is the Archon?

Why do the Aliens get all the sexy shit?
Please, can XCOM 3 be District 9 like "bully these aliens in a slum" game where you get to have cool things again?
I really like the design of the Archon, but I don't think it fits very well in a game like XCOM. It's a floating Greek statue, not a genemodded Floater.

Yeah the alien designs seem to be all over the place imo.

Why wait for X-Com 3 when the SDK and assets will allow us to make anything we want? :v:
I love the look of that thing, looks fucking beautiful and stargate as fuck, there's a staff weapon and all.
It makes sense that they'd try to turn some biomechanical abomination into something more PR-friendly.

In my experience of videogames, anything greek-like always has insanely high HP

it's just a trend I've noticed

It's like a mix of Stargate and Warhammer 40k
Because I'm also getting an Eldar vibe from the design.

Long War 2, aka Archons with 500 bars of health!
Long War 2, aka Archons with 500 bars of health!
In FFXIII-2 there the Hoplite, which only took 1 damage until you racked up a 200% combo at which it still halved incoming damage

It seems to make sense in universe, the aliens probably looked at the old Floater and noticed it was a complete and total scary son of a bitch, so they went with a complete redesign.
[t]http://images.gamersyde.com/image_xcom_enemy_unknown-19205-2418_0001.jpg[/t]
They don't seem to want to force people into things, they seem to want to take the peaceful route and trick humanity, suppressing us though kindness instead, and it would make sense that they would make the Archon look normal by comparison.
[editline]edit[/editline]
Seems I was correct, that seems to be what they were going for.
"We really wanted [the Archon] to be a contrast to the Floater," art director Greg Foertsch told Shacknews. "The Floater is dirty and grungy, and we wanted to embody 'elegance' with this. We somehow landed on Egyptian influence--it was so elegant with a lot of gold. He has this sort of angelic feel. We were really trying to contrast against other characters, and with this inner rage, the violence when he attacks. We also wanted to contrast that."
That elegance is a larger element in the game as a whole. The presentation made a point of showing the city architecture, 20 years after the aliens have successfully taken over. It looks eerily perfect, and the Archon continues that visual language. Foertsch mentioned it's as if both the architecture and the Archon are examples of the aliens "trying to make it a little less scary even though it's more scary."
Aliens seem to want to make everything seem perfect, everything seem elegant, to further enclose humanity within it's trap.
Basically what the guy above said.
Listening to the Firaxiscon video just now, good god, they're REALLY going all out with the modding tools. Sounds like the only thing we won't have access to is the engine source code (for obvious reasons, I guess).
We'd better be able to reverse engineer the Shieldbearer's tech.
i hope we get to see some of the older EU versions of aliens
i hope we get to see some of the older EU versions of aliens
I doubt it, until modders resurrect them. It seems the Ethereals have used their 20 years on Earth to improve their troops technologically and aesthetically.
Most likely the EU troops are just scrappy, rugged front-line invasion troops. Maybe they've already shipped them off to go conquer some new acquisition to the Ethereal Empire.
i hope we get to see some of the older EU versions of aliens
you mean like leftovers from the original invasion?
E: this is why I need to refresh. I wish 4chan-style-thread-refresh tampermonkey script still worked
The more I think about it, the more I think that the 5th class is going to be some kind of Psionic Human-Alien Hybrids you retrieve from the aliens in the late-mid game - something not yet indoctrinated (or perhaps outright rebellious to) the Ethereal cause. That or it is just going to be the nu-SHIV, but I don't think they'd refer to that as a "class" of soldier.
The reason I feel that Psionics might be a distinct class (as opposed to the EU method of layering it onto a Soldier's base class) is that the troops in this one are getting a lot more abilities both as part of their class and from their equipment and mods for it (it seems, anyway), so they might feel that adding Psionic abilities on top of that might result in too much choices from an individual trooper.
Maybe, I'm just spitballing anyway.

I'm not sure myself, stick a Horus looking helmet on there and a chest piece of some sort and i'm happy. But that's just the massive Stargate nerd in me speaking out loud.
I think the achron's design fits really well with the designs of the Advent soldiers, so maybe it was meant as more of a face for the aliens than the other, scary aliens. designing it similar to earth depictions of gods or angels is probably intentional on the aliens part, make them seem like the good guys you know.
the other aliens look more like shit they don't want humanity to see.

Yep, Faceless are meant to walk amongst us undetected until they're needed, and I imagine that any situation that involves them transforming into their "true" form probably involves all the civilians in the area being dead (or pretty shortly being killed). Mutons/Berserkers are totally combat troops, so are probably only deployed when shit has totally hit the fan or they're intimidating the non-Advent settlements (Ditto Chryssalids, Sectoids and Vipers). Archons are clearly some kind of honour guard unit, probably providing security whenever Ethereals are around, in addition to the Advent troopers.
Advent MECs are, I imagine, something deployed visibly in high risk situations involving the public, because I can't imagine humans being too intimidated by the idea of Combat Robots in the future envisioned in XCOM.
I really love how the Archon's look says redesigned for PR, yet it's bombardment would be easily capable of causing massive collateral damage. Quite the metaphor for Advent themselves.
Also there's a mod for longwar out called Art of War http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/638/?
Seems to add a bunch of perks to items and such, but one modification to the strategic game as well as a lack of descriptions for said perks and item changes kinda turns me off to installing it.

Its the Swarm modification, isn't it? I read that and went "nope!". Who seriously looked at Long War and decided that thing it needed was MORE missions per month.

Actually it was the countries leave at lower panic, as well as the difficulty levels being turned into some dumb thing about preference. Adding shit to Long War is good and cool and all but the last things are needs is higher difficulty, more RNG in the strategic game and to be even longer.

i'd pay top dollar if the intro for xcom 2 was this but tweaked showing xcom getting BTFO'd and the skyranger getting shot down.
The speech needs to be in there somewhere.
It'd be cool if there's a special mission where you send a squad into the old xcom facility ruins.
i hope we get to see some of the older EU versions of aliens
Maybe in an old, abandoned alien base, like the one you raid in EU
If they aren't in the game to begin with, those could probably be pulled off with mods pretty easily.

This. I really hope we can just bust through the hangar door, go through some alien scout party and maybe find a crazed Vahlen living in the old research room with millions of tiny sculptures in the shape of dead XCOM personnel or something IDK.
