To be fair on one point MuffinZerg is not wrong about the backsheath for the machete making no sense but I'm all for rule of cool at the end of the day
Its too difficult really to explain with words and unfortunately Skallagrim removed his 10 minute video where he went over it so I can't link that, but its apparently just very difficult to draw it over the shoulder due to collisions involving the weapon, the sheath and your back as you draw it. I think the fact the guy in the trailer draws it so slowly is a subtle nod to that.
A tad late, but Lindybeige has done a video on this as well (And he is tbh way more informative than Skallagrim)
I just realized that in the trailer one of the guys has a shotgun with a scope on it.
Slug rounds when?
Might be there because the soldier has S.C.O.P.E equipped.

In all seriousness, weren't the ridiculously large European swords like the Zweihander necessary to carry on a soldier's back? I always thought they used a modified sheath to make drawing them easier (undo a strap and slide it out sideways).

Carried on march yes, not necessarily drawn in the middle of combat
I've been playing original x-com and holy shit Beagle is right, it is "Vietnam Simulator". Snakemen will just come out of nowhere and murder my troops, especially when some dickhead throws a grenade from offscreen, they're probably giggling after casually slaughtering my best troops.

Yes they were, when marching just like DarkMonkey wrote. Because Greatswords are too long to carry around normally.
Actually, they were usually too large to carry on their back too. So what they did was put it in a sheath, and drop it on the nearest wagon or carry it on their shoulder.

It was drawn and ready for action before battles started.
It was commonly used to swipe pikes away, once closer to the enemy, they could hold the blade below the smaller parry guard and use it kinda like the half-sword technique used with longswords.
My current game keeps giving me heavies and snipers. I now have six heavies and six snipers, out of 18 men total.
I DON'T NEED THIS MANY SNIPERS XCOM
the best part is that I had to do a covert extraction with 5 of those snipers and one rookie, because all of the heavies were injured or being gene modded. I have no idea how I actually managed to complete that mission with only the rookie dying.
It would be cool if you could mod in voice clips
XCOM 2: Moonbase Alpha
The evolved sectoids and snake soldiers will know the true power of fear when they will see a soldier with a bigass sword in an astronaut costume running towards them while shouting "here comes another chinese earthquake: ebrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbr"
Does anyone else remind the alien controlled world of HL2 beta aswell? Next to the dark tone, I can see a lot of similarities, like the "Obey our benefactors/etc" propaganda, Metrocops/Alienguards controlling everyone, etc.
I was thinking about this very thing on the shitter. It basically is HL2, except the 7-hours war lasted a lot longer. Big "coalition" of alien races subjugating humans to join their army etc

Except the Xcom2 case actually looks good and is more intended on a long-term stay than some utilitarian re-purposing of old human structures.
I hate the HL2 universe so lol
Ok I'm going to go on a small rant here:
The thin men in Long War are too fucking op. I'm not kidding. It's fucking impossible to NOT lose a troop on a mission against them. It's fucking bullshit man. I've been trying to do the Convoy Raid Survivor Mission for over 3 hours and every fucking time the thin men just make an impossible long range shot to crit the survivor, forcing me to restart the mission. I really hope they're nerfed in the next Long War patch. Fuck Thin Men. Fuck. Thin. Men.
I did it on my first try and there are thinmints out the arse, but if you keep whittling their numbers down before they get reinforcements you should be able to stay on top of them. Having troops with Opportunist is really useful too, just make sure the VIP's in corner-cover and hunkered wherever possible, use overwatch to prevent flanks.
Now, the "Friends in low places" mission, THAT will make you fucking hate thinmen. In both cases, it's all about keeping up your momentum - Assaults, Scouts and gunners are extremely useful, Infantry/gunners are great for covering the rest of the squad while they move, and medics are important for neutralizing acid - speaking of which, if one of your troops does get hit with acid, make sure you move them last on the turn, and have them go towards the medic. They may cause panic chains, but if your medic has steadfast or an alien trophy, and you have at least a couple troops that can overwatch or suppress still up, you're okay.
The important thing is you keep the VIP moving, but don't let them go unsupported by the squad. It can even be worth taking armour instead of vests because you'll be doing a lot of short movements and subject to a lot of fire.

The Ethereals seem to care about how the humans inside the Advent cities perceive them (and maybe those living outside of them, too. Wanting them to see the Advent cities as a utopia). The Combine didn't give much of a shit, even in the Beta, as they were just here to strip the planet of anything useful (including the Humans, who could be turned trans-human.) - Civil Protection were willing collaborators lured with incentives, which is why Barney was able to infiltrate them etc. I imagine Advent troopers will probably run the scale from Civil Protection-like collaborators to modified and mind-controlled super-troopers. (Like Overwatch Transhuman soldiers but beefier).
Does mean a Half Life 2 mod incorporating elements of the Beta would be a relatively easy fit and pretty damn rad.

Pretty sure the Combine just wanted to repurpose humankind in general and strip the planet of resources

I don't think there's enough of a variety of units the combine have to be as diverse as Xcom's aliens. Would still be cool to see though.

If you go with a mash up of the Beta and 2 and the Episodes, you'd actually get a pretty good roster. Civil Protection, several flavours of Transhuman soldier (They scale up through to the Elites, and Episode 2 had the Shotgun wielding Rangers), the Alien Guard troopers from Beta, Cremators, Manhacks (As a melee flying unit), Hunter Synths, and you could probably use the Crab Synths as some kind of Sectopod like boss unit. And I know I'm missing stuff from the Beta, as there was a lot in that.
Areas outside of the cities could have Antlions, Bullsquids, Houndeyes and Zombies/Headcrabs as "neutral" mobs hostile to everyone.
Scanners, different types of OTA, Metrocops, APCs and Striders if vehicles are in, the synths we see in the Citadel.
Plenty to fight
Had a daydream at work today. A Heist mod in Xcom 2, none of that Payday rubbish. You have a team of specialists and you use the as-of-yet uncovered Stealth mechanics to evade guard patrols while you try to break into a specific area. Using the upgraded destruction you can also go in through the floor and ceilings. Phwoar.

That actually sounds like a neat idea. I'm sure someone can attempt at making a mod out of it. (Hell if I figure out the tools, I might try making something like that.)
I wonder if you could try modding it into a real time squad-based strategy game
Imagine republic commando

You could always do that in Silent Storm, there's lot's of great things Silent Storm does which XCOM never copied.
You can also free aim with your guns, you can tell anyone with a heavy machine gun to tear apart a wall and go through it, it's useful if you need to sneak in behind the enemy. And some other neat features. The overwatch in Silent Storm also behaves differently, if you are hidden and are spotted then you get a free move with your remaining AP points.

You could do that in the original, the best way to clear a building was to pelt it with explosives.

I hope they add that feature back then. I never played XCOM UFO too much, Silent Storm was my first PC game.
Been playing on Ironman Classic. First time I've done very well in Classic mode, but then Newfoundland reared its ugly head. Blasted through the entire mission, until the end when Zhang the MEC jumped off of a platform onto a stairway and dropped through the floor into an unreachable position. I quickly alt+tabbed out of the game over that in hopes that the last time the game autosaved was before it glitched.
Now not only is Zhang indefinitely trapped underneath a floor board with an imminent airstrike, but the game immediately crashes now whenever I load that save. :suicide:
New IGN article comes out today. It's supposed to be about why they made it a PC exclusive. If I didn't have to go to classes I'd spend all day refreshing IGN till the article popped up.

Is it today? I thought it was Friday
See, that would be perfect. Except for the fact that there'd be so few tech upgrades.
Seriously. All the alien technology in the galaxy before a face and the only things that become commonly issued to soldiers are staff-blast resistant plates and the little attachments that kill super-soldiers.
Ricardo; Can't he grapple away?
Nah, there would be loads of tech and weapon upgrades, the SG-C just never really used them. Like XCOM's tiered weapon system - pistol, laser pistol, plasma pistol etc there would be the pistol, Zat, that derpy thing the Wraith use and stuff. Doesn't need to be linear either, considering the benefits and disadvantages of a Zat over a 9mm. Stuff like that. There's a lot of technology in the Stargate universe that was never capitalized on for reasons, like cool shit in 1 episode then something happens that means it's not viable in the next, probably budgeting.

You're right. My head is in the clouds today. I probably should step away from the computer for a bit.
These fucking aliens I swear...
I intercept a supply barge and bring it down over the Atlantic, then they somehow survive because they crashed in a forest. I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a Atlantic sea forest.
I see you guys liked the comic I made. Want me to make more?

Go ahead, more content to discuss is always good. With XCOM 2 six months away, and the information about it going to be a measured drip feed until some time just before release, the only other thing to discuss is EU/EW/LW and the old games.
