This is before we even get the actual mod tools. This game is going to last forever
Just gotta change how many spawn locations there are on the map and then... Arguably, a re-balance of the game with stupidly powerful aliens fighting waves of your dudes, can be pretty fun.
Funny Beagle mentions a wave defense, I was planning on making a special mission (like a Blacksite) where you hold a resistance base against constant (at least 1 a turn) dropships landing in the open. You hold the line and slaughter them until like 20 turns where the Resistance is able to escape.
Doesn't have any of the build-up but if you wanna relive this beautiful moment [vid]https://a.pomf.cat/qtrafq.webm[/vid]
I'm sad the SST idea failed.
This just in, panicked soldiers can throw grenades :o
This just in, panicked soldiers can throw grenades :o
oh fuck
In Beagle's stream, he had 48 soldiers on a mission. Memester panicked and threw a grenade into like 15 XCOM soldiers. :v:

And a 48 man overwatch [vid]https://a.pomf.cat/gcgtoc.webm[/vid] And a panic grenade [vid]https://a.pomf.cat/uslpjk.webm[/vid] All stolen from /xcg/
I wish we had an option for the overwatch animations to happen at the same time. Having them take turn feels silly.
It was sillier in EU when all 6 of your guys waste ammo on an enemy that died on the first shot
Well it makes sense in real time. If everyone fired a burst at the same target some people would waste ammo.
After Beagle's stream I simply cannot go anything but EXALTCOM in my upcoming playthrough. VIGILO [AGGRESSIVE STATIC]
EXALT did nothing wrong.

I've been playing Xcom: EW to get myself mentally prepared for XCom 2. The fact that aliens get a free move whenever they spot you is BULLSHIT. Is there anything that gets rid of that shit?
It isn't a free turn though. They just scatter to cover so you don't slaughter them in the open. EU/EW is very much based on having cover.
It isn't a free turn though. They just scatter to cover so you don't slaughter them in the open. EU/EW is very much based on having cover.
I never said it was a free turn. I said it's a free move, as in a move action.
Turn and move are basically the same thing in my mind of XCOM. Still though, if they didn't have it the game would be baby easy. (This is why in XCOM 2 overwatch traps are really effective)
It's artificial difficulty. If I spot the enemy and have the upperhand I should get a free shot off rather than the game go "oh wait lol" and toss the enemies into cover. it's like playing a tabletop RPG with a really shitty DM.

It always happens, it's pretty predictable, plan around it. You can take advantage of it in some situations. If that didn't happen the balancing would be all kinds of fucked up
As I interpret Xcom's gameplay as actions within turns occurring more-or-less at the same time, having an entire squad of greys run into cover after the first shot of my ambush, even though I'd already had several other shots lined up, is pretty much a huge "fuck you" to the player. If I'm clever enough to set up an ambush like that on some dorks that are sitting around poking a dead body I should be rewarded with easy kills, not me being forced to watch them scuttle into cover like roaches under a fridge when someone turns the light on ON MY OWN TURN. It's incredibly anti-fun and creates artificial difficulty that could've been mitigated with better enemy placement.

On the enemy turn, the aliens use only 1 of their actions to patrol around, so they all still have 1 move left in them. That's why when you reveal them, some move to cover and those that can't move to cover go into Overwatch ( or maybe even fire if you have enabled the Twitchy Trigger Tentacle second wave option ), but that's why they only take 1 action, because they only have 1 action left. Now granted, while they do take this action on your turn, I think it's balanced out by the fact that they only patrol using 1 turn. And as mentioned before, this is good because if they don't take cover, it's just not even a strategy anymore, the enemy just standing there, not moving around or anything, lined up to take shots to the face.
Let's be honest, it's just the method the game uses to handle their spawn, just so they don't have fixed spawn positions, so they just spawn in a bunch and then scatter. Of course it is scummy them positioning during YOUR turn, but they can also just eat a whole squad overwatch while exploring with a shotgun-equiped motherfucker. It's all they way you approach visionless places.

By that logic I should be able to hold one of my action points to move in the middle of their turn. If they placed the enemy in places that prevented me from getting the drop on them (IE having them hiding inside buildings, or taking advantage of the environment to prevent me from spotting them until it was too late) that'd be way better. In that scenario if I'm ambushed, or whatever, it's my fault for not being cautious. Instead with the system in Xcom:EW/EU it's almost punishing the player for trying to play smart.

That way they can nicely setup their overwatch ambushes for you without you even knowing what you're fighting. Look, it's a game mechanic, and it works fine. It doesn't punish you for playing smart, nor is it anti-fun. Having enemies already ambushing you or standing in the open is definitely anti-fun.
I'm not entirely sure you grasp what I'm saying here. I just don't like the fact they get that free scuttle into cover when, logistically, all of my squad would've opened fire simultaneously for maximum effect, and gameplay wise it goes against the rules that I am forced to abide by. Hell, I'd be fine with the rest of the alien groups being alerted after that, but it'd still tilt that initial turn in my favor. I think it spits on a very real and common tactic, which to me seems absurd in a game that lauds its tactics. If you think the mechanic's fine then okay, cool, you can. No need to dumb-bomb me. However I do NOT like it and I think it's a direct hamper to my enjoyment of the game, hence my earlier question of "Is there anything that gets rid of this?"

Also yes, it's a tactics game but it's hardly milsim, you have to base your tactics on the game's rules.
Its not even a big impressive move to find them out in the open, that's pretty much how you activate every single pod, its only fair that they get into cover
