I'm not entirely sure you grasp what I'm saying here.
I just don't like the fact they get that free scuttle into cover when, logistically, all of my squad would've opened fire simultaneously for maximum effect, and gameplay wise it goes against the rules that I am forced to abide by. Hell, I'd be fine with the rest of the alien groups being alerted after that, but it'd still tilt that initial turn in my favor. I think it spits on a very real and common tactic, which to me seems absurd in a game that lauds its tactics.
If you think the mechanic's fine then okay, cool, you can. No need to dumb-bomb me. However I do NOT like it and I think it's a direct hamper to my enjoyment of the game, hence my earlier question of "Is there anything that gets rid of this?"
If the aliens don't get a free move to cover, the best tactic for the whole game will always be to bring lots of explosives and snipers with the "In The Zone"-perk. Instead of actual tactical play where you have to vary your tactics based on what you're facing, you're playing the game of "kill the pod before they get to do anything".
If the aliens are all activated, the game will quickly turn really frustrating. How does running into multipod overwatch sound? Or aliens coming in from your flank and firing on the same turn?
These are all things that are solved by the aliens' free move to cover. You can rarely wipe a whole pod out in the starting turn, but you still have a chance to move your people in good positions and be the first one landing any actual shots or things like suppression fire etc.. Assuming you didn't dash into unknown territory.
Wait for XCOM2, it works exactly like you're damn describing after you break concealment. Allowing them to discover you is the superior option though.

That's pretty much what I'm doing. I'm also enjoying the changes to the pistol that I've seen.
I started playing Enemy Unknown/Within for the first time yesterday. All my soldiers are dying before they reach level 2 and I failed most of the main missions so far. How fucked am I? Should I just start over? Any tips?
Also, knowing that my failure is canon for XCOM 2 makes me feel a lot better about it. :v:

Yeah, sounds like you're pretty boned already.

-Avoid half cover unless there's no useful full cover within reach.
-Don't rush things. Don't be afraid to inch around within your blue movement range if you suspect something's nearby.
-Keep an eye out for flanking shots. Running behind an enemy and flanking them gives a massive hit-chance and crit-chance bonus. This works both ways, so also be sure to cover your own flanks.
-Always have a backup plan. If plan A goes wrong (and it probably will), have another soldier ready to take over if need be. If that soldier then also fails, you should generally have a third soldier ready to either pin the enemy down for next turn, or to take it out with a grenade.
-Even on lower difficulties, always assume that a Thin Man will hit its target. Plan and prioritize your targets around this during the early-game.
Probably some shit in there that doesn't apply as much to the lowest and highest difficulties, but them's the basics AFAIK.

Thanks. Do Thin Man do more damage than Sectoids?
No but they have a higher chance to crit because god is dead and oh fuck
I hope that Firaxis releases a soldier creator for XCOM 2 before launch, I'd really like to make soldiers so I can spend less time on making soldiers on launch
I'm hoping you will be able to just have a soldier class or something. I'd like to have a few guys who just carry assault rifles and a few extra grenades.
I'm still not entirely convinced that XCOM2 isn't a terrorist cell simulator (which is an interesting niche genre btw that is totally unexplored).
P.S. Dammit, I'm getting hype for video game again. :what:
I literally can't believe its almost here. I was super hyped when it was first announced, but after the delay it can of fell off my radar. Now I've watched the retaliation trailer, I'm back at those pre-delay levels. Now I'm debating over trying to beat Enemy Within one last time before the release.
I preordered the digital deluxe edition today.

It totally is, though.
nah
Covertly operating and using violence to sway people to your cause, while managing scarce resources? Definitely terrorism. You can even give your soldiers shemagh head scarfs if you so desire.
I just want that god damn steelbook.
resistance and terrorism are the same thing depending on which side you fall in with, why choose to see yourself as the bad guys?
~foOd for thougHt~
on that note i can't think of any good Dark VIPs

How the heck do you buy the Steelbook version? I can't find it anywhere. :v:

Nothing wrong with keeping an objective view of the situation. It reminds me of Ghost in the Shell where they comment that their work would technically be terrorism if the government didn't approve of what they were about to do.
the steelbook is too expensive to justify getting for me, that's a lot of money for just a nice tin
the last parking ticket i got was bullshit that guy would for sure take it up the chimney for advent, he's on the list

It's only for certain countries.
Weren't non-ballistic weapons really ass as time went on in the old X-COM games though? Or are they thoroughly superior now?
[editline]8th January 2016[/editline]
Just got to some unknown mission in a fishing village. Got a bad feeling, gonna send one guy and a bunch of SHIVs.
Update from this.
Figured I would send a bunch of rookies, got some dock, and then the game ends up crashing right as I was about to finish off a Crystal Kid.
So I start it up again and load the game, and wham, I get a completely different mission about some badasses with bandanas, gun and nice suits. Did I miss anything good?
Thanks. Do Thin Man do more damage than Sectoids?
On average yes, because they will crit a lot more often.
- Do not use half-cover at all unless that soldier is 100% ready to take a face full of plasma
- Destroy the enemies cover whenever possible with grenades/rockets, uncovering them will make them easy to hit.
- If given options, the aliens will target soldiers with the worst cover/defense. This can be used tactically to control who gets shot at.
- Avoid ending your turn with enemies in vision whenever possible. If you know you can't kill an alien this turn it may be better to break line of sight and force them to move up.
- Force the alien's hand whenever possible. Overwatching can prevent them from advancing on you, flanking them will force them to run for new cover, breaking line of sight will often get them to chase after you.

Gosh darnit. :(
And Canada isn't one of them :saddowns:
Yeah limited steelbook is a bummer, though it was originally AU only, so there's hope. (Not really)
It totally is, though.
-...You don't understand! You can't reason with them, can't bargain! They don't feel pity, remorse or fear! They are fanatically loyal to their 'cause' and will gladly die just to kill more us!
They almost never take prisoners, and those who got captured are found in pieces or never at all.
I remember when our squad got ambushed...
One of those psychos charged right at us, got up close, point blank and fucking shot Sarge in the face! And Sarge... Sarge's upper torso basically exploded, I... I panicked, I tried shooting Sarge's killer but he barely flinched, and, I swear, I pumped that fucker with almost full clip of lead, with blood spraying out of him and everything but he barely even noticed that! Instead he turned to the rookie and pulled out huge-ass sword, I shit you not, a real sword and chopped that kid in half. That's when I lost it, I dropped my weapon and ran away. While I was running one of their snipers got me in the leg and I fell in a roadside ditch. Why they didn't finish me? I still don't know. Maybe they thought I was dead. Or maybe didn't want to waste time finishing me off, after all I was unarmed and badly injured. I crawled to the side to see what's happening and, holy shit, I really wish I didn't.
I still remember their screams... They knew our reinforcements are coming and they were ready. New squad got dropped off right into their kill zone, it was a goddamn massacre. Those guys didn't even see from where they were killed. They butchered everyone except for the lieutenant, those XCOM fucks decided to take him alive apparently. Shows how fanatical they are, really. Lt was spraying his assault rifle right at them but none of them even ducked, oh no, those freaks charged straight right at him with fucking tazers... God, that was horrible to watch, I could do nothing but watch them do it. And all that time they were screaming something like "VIGILO CONFIDO" or some shit.
-Alright, that's enough. You can go rest now, we'll call you again if necessary.
*...There is no God but the Commander and Officer Bradford is his prophet...*
-Wait, what was that? You hear this?
*...We will cleanse this soil from xeno filth...*
-Oh shit, it's THEM! IT'S THE XCOM!
Loud explosion roars through the building as IED takes down few walls.
-IT'S TIME FOR RECKONING MY BROTHERS! KILL EVERYONE! EARTH WILL BE OURS! VIGILO CONFIDO!
Crowd of masked fanatics begin to chant *VIGILO CONFIDO! VIGILO CONFIDO! VIGILO CONFIDO!* while slaughtering all survivors in the building.
[sp]Another fine operation, well done Commander.[/sp]
I'm at the UFO-Defense late game, and Sectopods are really scary man.
I have so much trouble keeping countries from flipping their shit. I'm literally throwing as many satellites as I can, and completing every mission and still I have four countries that are at red.
