so I decided to redownload Enemy Unknown, and I'm greeted with the fact that I can't change my soldiers' armour and dye colour because I don't own a £3,69 DLC? Fucking awesome.
Steam sales are coming up soon so if that's too much for you just wait until then.
So I've been playing an unmodded Enemy Within while also lurking in this thread a lot and I've seen y'all mentioned "The Long War" and I looked at it and I like a lot of what it adds (especially the 12 squad members thing, I had thought of how fun a bigger squad would be the other day) but it seems like it tries to hold you by the balls if you aren't super good at XCOM. I'm about halfway through the campaign right now and I'm doing alright, but is it worth waiting until I finish the campaign to mod it? The features are pretty tempting.

12 members? That's only on the Final Assault mission as far as I know. Also, yes, definitely finish Vanilla XCOM first before trying Long War.
You could do that in the original, the best way to clear a building was to pelt it with explosives.
Best way to play the early-game of Apoc, start off by removing the Cult of Sirius. The destruction system in first three X-COMs was great.

I wonder if ADVENT will try to capture your XCOM dudes, that'd be a pain in the ass.
It's really painful to see one of my snipers miss a 99% shot. There should be a feature if you miss a shot with at least 95% of hit a sound should play saying "THAT'S XCOM, BABY!"
More painful to see my upgraded sniper, who I customized and gave a name and everything, miss 3 80% shots on a thin man in a fucking row and then die from said thin man's crit.

I never played it without Long War. I'm generally alright at turn-based tactics and managed to get by on Ironman Impossible. My current run's on brutal and it's barely any easier, in fact it feels like it got harder since B14 which is what I was playing on Impossible. Anyway, if you're not feeling particularly confident about a LW playthrough, there are plenty of second wave options that make it easier but I'm not sure how much easier classic is than brutal.
Speaking of things not being easy:

Not seen: 3 more thinmints off-screen, another pod around the corner of the building and the 4 dead ones.
What do I do oh god

Kingsman: Secret Service, pretty good film

No kill like overkill, as my scout car with a pulse laser said to the entire residential district in Xenonauts.
curse you Amazon - Elite Soldier Pack is on discount for 1$ but only available to US customers and they cancelled my order because they somehow found out that my card has US address but is actually a UK card.
fuck

Even Xenonauts destruction is nothing compared to X-COM UFO Defence and Apocalypse
Starting Skyranger, everyone with rocket launchers with HE ammo and autocannons with HE / Incendiary ammo and a rocket tank.
Nothing left but flat, smoking ground.

Honestly, UFO Defence is worth playing just for the insane tactics you can try out. Afraid of losing your top troopers trying to capture an alien navigator? Charge the UFO with twenty rookies dressed on coveralls and wielding stun sticks. 80% casualties are acceptable.
Chrysallids threatening to start a zombie apocalypse? Equip every rookie with a live grenade and send them into battle. If they die they won't turn into a zombie due to the damage, and the Chrysallid is also damaged.
Got only one grenade left, but your dude can't throw far enough? Form a line and juggle the live grenade through several soldiers to reach the destination.
Yes they were, when marching just like DarkMonkey wrote. Because Greatswords are too long to carry around normally.
Actually, they were usually too large to carry on their back too. So what they did was put it in a sheath, and drop it on the nearest wagon or carry it on their shoulder.
[editline]4th June 2015[/editline]
It was drawn and ready for action before battles started.
It was commonly used to swipe pikes away, once closer to the enemy, they could hold the blade below the smaller parry guard and use it kinda like the half-sword technique used with longswords.
When I think of back scabbards, I think of this.

Only problem I can think of with a scabbard like that is poor protection for the sword against the elements. Wonder if anything of the sort was truly used.
Speaking of original xcom destruction, if you're on a UFO mission and you Skyranger pilot landed in the middle of a bunch of buildings (as he likes to do) just get guys with HE grenades and Autocannons with HE rounds. If you meet any contact just shower the building with suppressive fire like you're a grunt in the Vietnam War. Eventually you'll kill anything that moves, just don't try that tactic in the UFO proper.
[editline]4th June 2015[/editline]
Oh yeah, ALWAYS throw a smoke grenade off the ramp for your first turn. Even if there's nothing shooting you at the ramp the smoke will be helpful for fighting on the ground.

Always use phosphorus rounds. As someone in SA once said: "If you use enough incendiary, there are no night missions."
I see I'm not the only one following Methados

I'll be honest, I steal most of my shit from /xcg/ but after all the recent stuff I think I'll follow hjim a bit more closely.

Someone figured out you can edit an ini setting to enable it for free

So I was playing some xcom enemy within on my phone. Thinking it was some pleb shit since I beat the game numerous times on the PC and Long War. I disarmed the final bomb and I was just moping shit up then some thin men spawned and within a few turns they crit and annihilated my entire team.
I FUCKING HATE THIN MEN
I'm pretty impressed with the phone port though since its the full game with just reduced texture resolution. Nice to have to kill some time.

Also,
[sp2]ayy lmao[/sp2]
I have been having a really good run lately - only one or two folks get injured on a drop and I'm several months in with only two casualties
I'm actually really tense and waiting for the other shoe to drop :v:
I never have any casualties in my XCOM saves.
[sp]Because I quit the game whenever someone dies[/sp]
It's hard for me to really get into the game. Heavy losses can be pretty off putting for me. Hence why I never finish a classic game.

The base defense is what got my guys killed. Didn't lose the base, but I lost almost the entire roster defending it. Man was that hard to recover from.
I decided to start a Vanilla run of some Ironman Impossible to remind myself of the good ol' xcom, and I still see that the 3 first months are tough as nails, after which you start steamrolling the aliens easily. Right now I'm in July with Titan Armor and MEC-2s, got Plasma Rifles and working on Heavy Plasmas. I'm just waiting on the Base Defense now.
So I'm currently on my first playthrough of this game (Thanks Rotanixel) and its going pretty damn well, outside of the 3 in the tutorial i have only lost 1 soldier and I'm loving it.
Anyway this happened to me
