I caved in and watch TB's review copy video in spite of my xcom blackout for a few months. All that did is just increase my hype meter. I hate myself.
I'm forcing myself to avoid as much videogame news coverage as possible until the end of April, 'cause I'd get too distracted by uncontrollable hype for XCOM 2 and Dark Souls 3 :v:

Here's a neat heads up, people who want the steelbook can get it from amazon.de, in USD it comes out to ~$73, but you won't get it till the week after at the soonest. I'm weighing how badly I want to play vs the collectible case. Also 25% off at GMG. [editline]19th January 2016[/editline] Interestingly, this means that if you were already ordering a physical copy from Amazon (in the US), the steelbook is only a few dollars more and days later from Germany.
I'm so going to make these guys as soldiers when I research exosuits [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/TVAuVv3.jpg[/thumb]
Honestly I wonder if MECs or Gene modded soldiers will still be a thing in XCOM 2? MECs almost seem like they'll be replaced or massively supplanted by EXO suit equipped soldiers. And gene modded troops seem like they'll just be replaced or seamlessly integrated with the PCS chips/implants.
I want something bigger than Exosuit, though.

There is an outside chance it will be Shivs, but the use of "Soldier class" makes me think it is probably MECs. Exosuits are just a type of armour that exist to give you access to rocket launchers and other neat toys.
Didn't the Shen's Last Gift DLC get leaked with something about "Lazarus"? That could either mean Dreadnought-like MECS or Cyborg soldiers.

I wonder if you can capture Advent troops with a stun weapon or something.
Mecs were awesome in EW, but i would have preferred it if they could still act as normal soldiers as well as giant battle mechs. Do their cyber arms and legs not work properly or something?
at this point if it happens it'll be a dlc or expansion, i wouldn't expect it in the initial release without them saying so
Yeah, we know, we're spitballing about the Shen's Last Gift DLC.
Actually finding her as a dark VIP would be interesting, she was certainly more willing to push ethics than Shen (though not as far as EXALT), or at any rate didn't raise objections to anything. She might join them with the idea "Think how much we have to gain and learn from them".
They always tried to tell you that Shen was the cautious one and Vahlen was the one pushing the boundaries, but frankly giving troops better leg muscles and unlocking latent psychic powers seems a lot less ethically sketchy than permanently lobbing off their limbs. Hell, I bet he didn't even have to replace their voice boxes with computer ones, I think he just did it because it sounds cool.
Any good mods for XCOM:EW? I have EU and I was thinking I should get EW soon and play it, but there have always been a couple things that bothered me about EU. Namely that if you lose even a single soldier, the game is effectively over. Always seemed too silly to me that you killed a hundred aliens but now you've taken one casualty and now you lose. Another thing is that the human equipment is nothing more than useless starter junk that can't even kill naked Sectoids, and fails horribly to their tiny wrist-pistols.

The whole point of XCOM is about dealing with loss and managing risk

Soldier fatigue means you'll be keeping a MUCH bigger roster in rotation (instead of taking the same easily-broken super-squad on every mission), so a high-ranking soldier death means a 1-5% effectiveness setback rather than 15-20%. Soldiers also have 2 item slots per default so you can back them full of flashbangs, frags, motion scans and other utility items that help de-fang early threats. Early game is also helped by the fact that the classes' signature abilities actually makes them good at what they're supposed to be doing (Snipers get Squadsight instantly for example).
This advice isn't posted nearly enough: Small UFOs should give you a sense of joy every time you get to raid one. They're like a piñata full of XP and [del]space candy[/del] alloys, elerium, and flight computer or two which is good for a quick buck. Get your best guy as a babysitter (usually a medic, to keep the other alive and allow the rookies to get kills), then fill the rest of the roster with all your rookies and squaddies and other shitty troops who need to cut their teeth
What the heck are you talking about? You hire more soldiers from the barracks. The whole point of XCOM is about dealing with loss and managing risk
I was talking more late-game where losing a soldier is extremely punishing to the point where it's safer to build a SHIV than try sending a Rookie / Squaddie out there. Even with all the high tech armour and guns, they simply have such terrible stats that they're borderline unusable at that stage. I wouldn't mind a game that was more lethal at the cost of being less punishing. Personally I think it would be much better if normal UFO's still showed up, at least those would give you the option to send out your B-Team so you have a healthy number of replacements at all stages of the game. Darkest Dungeon lets you do that.
I'd argue Long War solves both those points rather elegantly. I like the game but I'm far from a professional or a masochist, and I've heard it's extremely difficult for the hardcore old-school players. What you mentioned does sound appealing though, but the difficulty and complexity has put me off it.

Plenty of small UFO missions in Long War though :v:
I've heard a lot about Long War, but I'm not sure if it's the mod for me. Currently about 1/3rd ways into the campaign, doing sort of OK. Other than going all-in on airgame, playing tactical missions defensively and bailing out on impossible ones I believe I'm not doing much differently. I don't think the "masochist" label is justified (unless you're playing aggressively or try to pick a difficulty higher than Normal on your first go), early vanilla seems significantly harder than early Long War.
Do EU/EW actually have a time limit? Or is it just soft-limits that make x enemies spawn the longer you take to undergo a story mission?
Do EU/EW actually have a time limit? Or is it just soft-limits that make x enemies spawn the longer you take to undergo a story mission?
You can take an infinite amount of turns on a mission, but there are a finite amount of enemies.
Do EU/EW actually have a time limit? No, not during missions, I mean to complete the game. [editline]20th January 2016[/editline] As in, if you take too long to do the first mission instead of sectoids and the sectoid commander it'll be filled with mutons.
