I added my Steam friendlist to the FP namelist and there's a few names on there with non-numerical/alphabetical symbols, mostly underscores "_" but a few others as well, does OpenXcom not like those either?
Underscores are fine. Are you getting the same error I am? Some more testing:
anything wrapped with {} gives the same error I had (error at line 0, column 0)
Things wrapped with () are fine.
Thing's like ☭/░/ other unicode characters don't display but they still work (though I wouldn't recommend that as this can happen). Can I see the namelist you are using?
PSA: there is both a "Not-So-Long-War" and "Cinematic Mode" (slightly buffs soldier aim) second wave options plus the same old adjustable difficulty for Long War that make things more manageable if you've got cold feet about trying it.

There you go. I've noticed I still have a few square brackets in there for a couple names so I'll remove them, and as far as I can tell, yeah I'm getting the same error you were; I'd load up and get the black cmd popup informing me that I may not have installed OpenXcom correctly.
Does anyone take the non-medic path for support (smoke grenades!) I mean I can imagine it being an option if you've already got a medic, but i'm not if it should be done. It might be better to have two medics.
Whilst the assault and heavy classes have both their sides pretty balanced i think.
I tried the non medic support on my last run through and I do have to say that I stuck with her ever since trying it out. I did hand out some medkits to other soldiers to compensate for the lower amount of kits on site. The additional smokes saved my squad from certain death multiple times in that run.
I think the thing with air game is that you are no longer expected to safeguard the sky and swat ufos like flies, it's more of about pretending you are doing something important and potentially rarely bring something down for (honestly quite massive) gain. It's kinda a side thing (which you admittedly just cannot ignore) to the main game which is mainly about responding to abductions, terrors, and dealing with Exalt.
I personally have basically quit playing XCOM and the Long War when the mission in chrysalis harbour popped up, because I spent good two hours on savescumming and trying to go through it with my star lineup, and it was just fucking IMPOSSIBLE with what I had.
FUCK chrysalis squads in the Long War, they are absolute and utmost bullshit.
Are you kidding, that's like the easiest mission, I even had one pod of thinmen show up in it. Just bring a couple of grenadiers with 4 AP nades each, at least one infantry and at least one assault with close combat specialist to clean up any stragglers (Reaper rounds recommended). It may even be worth bringing a rocketeer with two shredders so the AP grenades can wipe an entire group. Overwatch-crawl your way through the high ground until you activate. When you do, blue-move back and overwatch, should put enough distance between you and the lids so they have to double-move. It's best to use your assault to activate because they can run 'n gun back or even double-move and use CCS.
Once you reach the ship, put everyone on the deck above the whale and overwatch while your most mobile soldier goes to activate the beacon, then you can pretty much dash everyone back with 4 turns to go on the airstrike
Overwatch crawl in Long War on Newfoundland? Um, how?
All Chrysalids in Long War have lightning reflexes so overwatch is a load of useless wet wank
Is that Civ, another Firaxis game or the volunteer in the second half?

Beyond Earth DLC
Is that Civ, another Firaxis game or the volunteer in the second half?
Its Beyond Earth, will be about the new expansion for it.

Rising tide.
I suspect Civ:Be is going to end up being something like Civ5 - it grows the beard with the expansions.

Where are you getting this from? The only Chryssalids that get Lightning reflexes are Pod Leaders, not every chryssalid.

Of course it is, why did you think it was so shit.

Removing the brackets from the bottom two give me no problems.

Rest in piece thunder-6, you died to your squad could live.
On to thunder-7 I guess.
Seriously shivs are the hero x-com deserves
I sometimes take a shiv in. With one of the upgrade they become a movable piece of cover, and later they obviously can't be mind controlled. Though honestly, I didn't find their aim to be incredibly notable.
How long should I be waiting between researching the ***PRIORITY*** stuff?
How long should I be waiting between researching the ***PRIORITY*** stuff?
If you're playing Long War, you can pretty much leave it as long as you like, not sure if the same holds for vanilla. I didn't get xenobiology/neurology til september, but the research credits gained from interrogating aliens probably makes it worth it
Lost a Major today, but then I remembered that I had 'not all soldiers are created equally' on. The guy had like 60 aim. So it's not that much of a loss.
Also, Should I be doing the immediate objectives... immediately. Right now i've just decided to research the tower you get from the underground base, two months after beating the underground base.

very nice if you don't want to risk troops too, just send the SHIV in first

What's that good for when he always goes first and wastes at least one reaction shot? And in general, I dunno if I was under the par at the time but I had laser weapons and just didn't do enough damage.
I also had literally three crys pods activate as very first encounter, all in span of two turns. I am not sure if it was bad luck but it was practically impossible to deal with.

Flashbangs and CCS assaults are your friend. Just flashbang as many as you get, shoot any that doesnt get flashed or is a pod leader, and leave your assaults out of blue range from the flashed, and just wait for the tower defense madness to start.

Lightning reflexes doesn't guarantee a miss on overwatch, especially against opportunists. If you have scouts or assaults with hit & run or assaults with close encounters, they can quickly mop up any that remain after rockets and grenades and as woot said, flashbangs reduce their movement range. When I last played the mission, I also had 3 pods activate and it wasn't that difficult to deal with

Grenades, Rockets, Flashbangs, Shotguns. To me it just sounds like you were not properly equipped for that mission at all. Also since there is no timed objective to begin with, you can take your time and not progress that fast through the map, you can try letting the pods run into you.
Methados drew a snakeman for a change.

I once activated a pod of Mutons with an Alloy Shiv once, the games AI decided that the muton taking cover behind the SHIV was a good idea.
The Shiv still had it's second move left, I imagine that whomever was in charge of that mission got a damn good slap.
I used to get really into the crazy stories of my little badass soldiermans, giving every one (even the rookies) unique names and brightly coloured armour. (As far as I'm concerned, if you're not fielding a squad of Power Rangers, you're playing the game wrong)
At one point after recruiting a bunch of fresh troops, I went to name one dude but couldn't think of anything funny to name him. So I just called him "John Expendable", turned his armour red, and moved on.
Then I realised hours later that the guy was black. Woops. :v: And there I was, expecting/planning to get him killed in some dangerous and risky endeavour. I laughed it off and moved on, but when the time came to use him I forgot about my plans, slapped the strongest armour available on him (as I always do with my rookies), and kept him alive.
I ended up unwittingly levelling him all the way to Colonel rank. Then I sent him in for Psi-testing, and he came back positive. Then I levelled up his psi-abilities, and he became the Volunteer for the Temple Ship mission. By the end of the game, he was the single most valuable person in the whole of XCOM.
RIP Colonel Expendable, the unlikely saviour of Earth, and final martyr for the human cause.

Oh. Well. :v:
I guess I'll make another John Expendable in XCOM 2, to carry on his legacy.
