Bought the bundle for EW and the extras. Should I do a vanilla playthrough first (I've already done it in EU), or should I go straight for Long War?
^ At CG-105, I'd say go straight for Long War, Classic or Normal, up to you.
But most importantly the game options, I suggest: Cinematic Mode, Red Fog, Hidden Potential, Iron+Bronze Man modes both, Aiming Angles maybe, and that's it. Have fun!
I've been trying to play on ironman but I'm too much of a wimp to handle that and classic, so i've fallen to normal ironman
The least you can do is opt for Bronze Man mode along with Ironman, and Classic for more aliens to be faced against.
This way you can restart missions. It's not as unforgiving and CGNick will forbid playing this Bronze man mode, but when you send a squad on a hard mission, you're still stuck in there for good. And sometimes you gotta weigh between this soldier dying or that soldier dying, or restarting the mission again. Or abandoning the mission completely even.
The spawning place, meld locations etc. will change every time too.
Even if you do the mission perfectly on your 3rd or 5th try, you'll still feel that "it wasn't indeed a perfect mission" cuz you had to do it so many times, so a punishing/failed feeling so to speak.

Long war has a lot of frustrating balance stuff with it but the new research and upgrades make it worth it. However, if you're prone to starting things and losing interest then I would really not recommend long war, since long war is pretty fucking long and it will get tedious unless you're REALLY a fan of the game.
Anyone seen Marbozir's Ironman Impossible lets play?
He absolutely destroys every mission and keeps his cool throughout the entire LP. There's one point 2 sectopods and a disk surrounds him and he doesn't skip a beat kills the fuck out of them. He only loses one dude and it's during the last mission
What is the best old X-COM to pick up while they're on sale?

Ufo Defense (Classic), Terror From the Deep (More of the Same, with more Lobster), and Apocalypse (MegaCorp shenanigans). You may also get Interceptor, if you can really give enough of a fuck.
From what I understand, UFO Defense is the easiest to get into of the three. Terror from the Deep is basically the same as UFO Defense, but way harder. Apocalypse is insanely complicated. From what I've heard anyway, I've only played the first one.

Bah, same strategies still work. HE against everything, just with addition of knives applied to the delicious Lobster.
What's the difference between Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within? Picked them up today.
Is is just a big dump of extra content on top like FTL: Advanced or is it very different to the base game like Generals: Zero Hour
It's more like Advanced Edition. New enemies, new mechanics, new maps added onto the base game.

Basically mec troopers, and mutation soldiers are added. And a terrorist faction is added.
- Terrorist faction. There's a king of the hill gamemode in there. It's pretty cool. Also a source for free laser weapons (unfortunately at about the same time you get plasma weapons)
- The option to remove all of your soldiers limbs and put them in a giant powered armours. They enemy get this too, though with less variety.
-Asphyxiation. Also invisible squid that strangle.
-A few new items. Some new grenades. An upgrade that lets everyone take two items. It's good stuff.
- A lab that lets you modify your best soldiers with things like superjump, probablyNotDeath,Don'tHypnotiseMe,DeathFueledAdrenalin and many more. Not absolutely needed, but really good anyways.
-more mutations for your campaigns.
-more maps (probably. I don't know. I haven't actually finished it yet)
It's harder though. Not in the sense that it's more brutal and unfair, but rather that there's more to deal with.

Oh yeah. You're the Valkyrie Chronicles person.

EW doesn't really have as much bullshit. In fact, it makes the game sorta easier, but at the same time more interesting, especially due to EggSalt being suicidal cunts.

I meant bullshit in the playful way.
90% chance to Hit
FUCK YOU, This is XCOM baby!
1% chance to hit?
FUCKING CRITICAL, THIS IS XCOME BABY!
[editline]12th June 2015[/editline]
Seriously, I tried the game on a friend's laptop with EU.
My assaults would make the biggest bullshit crit hits. Half way across the map, 1% chance. Nail em.
Welp, that's my first soldier death and I've already gotten my first taste of this XCOM bullshit you're talking about.
Sent my guy behind a car door, alien shoots it off when he moves because of Overwatch(?), guy now has 40% to hit with no cover. Alien dies, car explodes because it doesn't have a door, seriously hurts my guy. It's a chain reaction now, the car behind it explodes on the next turn and finishes him off :suicide:

Man, I need a way to make custom labels like these for a video I'm working on.
Also that font if at all possible, since the next-best alternative costs twenty-quadrillion dollareydoos.
My bet is edited language file, just don't remember if Unreal had those or not
So, latest landed raider in my campaign went tits up and had the outsiders trigger prematurely. Our hero CGNick got flanked by them in close quarters and by some holy chance had both outsider shots miss.

Atleast this time I can put a fedora on you.

Bought this while it's on sale with the DLC. I'm really liking this game so far, but it was a little frustrating when my entire squad missed one sectoid when they were only 3 squares away from it

Yeah, there's gonna be a lot of that.
Bah, same strategies still work. HE against everything, just with addition of knives applied to the delicious Lobster.
The same strategy doesn't work too well when the maps are fucking massive and you need to hunt down that last fishtoid motherfucker hiding behind a rock sniping your guys from the darkness.
I can barely get past the starting mission because the aliens hide a ton and it gets really boring crawling around a big map for an hour.
That's pretty much one of the reasons why XCOM UFO Defense is easier, because the map sizes are much more manageable.
Just finished Enemy Unknown, damn the last mission gave me trouble. However, I don't see how XCOM2 can be happening following this ending, is the Enemy Within ending canon and/or it has a different ending from EU entirely?
pls no spoilers I want to finish EW and see the ending for myself.
AFAIK the entirety of EU/EW is non-canon in a sense, since XCOM 2 takes place in a world where XCOM loses shortly after (or even during) the tutorial mission.
Also EU/EW share the same ending. EW just adds more ways to lose when it comes to endings.
