It gets worse.
Namely, Long War is more punishing for bad moves and not keeping on the up-and-up with upgrades. You can easily stream roll the early bit with SHIVs and overwatch abuse, but some missions are going to be neigh impossible without restarts.
(Looking at you, civvie panic in South Africa. 12 Chrysafucks and 9 Robosquids later (+1 zombie), somehow clutched a no-death victory only using standard ballistic weapons and a single SHIV.)

Welp, time for a new game. This time went with Brutal Ironman, plus Bronzeman mode. Same starting country, South Africa, with the two Resource Salvage foundry projects already completed.

EU/EW makes reference to it once or twice so I'm pretty sure it's considered canon, and the Bureau even has a little nod to EU at the very end of the game. The comment by the Uber Ethereal regarding [I]their[/I] inability to ascend also matches up with the Ethereal depicted in the Bureau looking similar, but being entirely composed of energy (meaning its very possible an Ethereal that diden't fail to ascend).
That said the Bureau as a game seems to have been more or less swept under the rug.

Except that I think they are pure robots. At least, I couldn't see anything biological in their design. But otherwise, they're MECs.
One thing that did look off was the animations. Everyone seemed to move too fast and cover looked like they were crouching a foot away as opposed to leaning up against it.
