You get to choose the path your soldiers take instead of the game deciding which tiles they walk in for you.
Does anybody know what waypoints are? They've mentioned them once or twice but haven't really explained what they mean.
No more soldiers going across the entire map just to get to the other side of a wall, because there is fire there, agroing alien pods along the way.
I do dislike Bradford's voice, tho. He sounds too drunk.
I can't really explain why, but I really like the new shooting animations, especially the overwatch ones.

This. I don't like the new voice at all. It's completely changed.

I'm hoping it's a Wheatley situation where that voice is just a placeholder until they can get the proper VA in.

Well for one it looks like they've gotten rid of the death delay. No longer will sectoids take three bullets to the head, pause for a moment, then fly backwards.

I had totally forgotten about that deal. There is hope.
Honestly though from the gameplay, the running looks stuttery and the lighting is odd. (No shadows?) But we're still months away so I'm not concerned.
So here's my hopes for returning characters:
- Bradford is an alcoholic. Recovering. You're as likely to find him in command center as you are in Avenger's Pub. You probably start with him.
- Vahlen gone entirely crazy. Maybe even Snake Tits crazy (unwillingly). You maybe will have to save her from Alien gene camp, maybe even giving you an ability to recruit anti-Ay sentiment Aliums after stunning them. Or just cut them up in revenge. For science!
- Shen is now Brain in a Jar, so he can't just be old now. Probably second char you start with. If there is a Base-defense mission, he may or may not end up controlling a custom-made MEC.
- Anette will probably be mentioned, and may even end up being a target for a mission, but probably not recoverable.
- Zhang probably runs an anti-alien group in China. May be a post-mission recruit.
Sadly Shen was looking up there in EU, so I doubt 20 years of alien warfare has been good on him, save for gene therapy.
Zhang is immortal and cannot die. Don't you know this?
Was the camera a little too zoomed in or was it just me?
Other than than I'm damn impressed. Everything is so punchy, the weapon sounds and impacts and ragdolls and explosions. Good stuff, I'm excited.

Except with Wheatley, the placeholder VA was the amazing one.
[sp]Merchant was the original va, right? Or am I mixing this up[/sp]
What if Advent can stun and capture your troops, and then you have to go on a rescue mission? Or maybe one of the mission types is rescuing previously captured resistance fighters.

Merchant was the replacement/final one, but people still liked the first one.
Merchant is actually a professional who knows how to act. The placeholder VA sounded drunk the whole time.

so, the snaketits not only wraps around people to knock them out, they can also flick their tongue at enemies to pull them towards them so THEN they can wrap around them and knock them out
they use psychological warfare to turn our boners against us

Also they said it wouldn't be a one shot affair like it was in the demo.
I do hope the melee weapon on the ranger isn't a one shot weapon. I'd much rather is be a finisher for an injured enemy, otherwise it would be a bit overpowered, even if it leaves you out of cover.

I am not concerned about the gameplay ramifications (it cannot be worse than thin mint fart spam in long war), I am talking about the sexual tension this situation creates.
they use psychological warfare to turn our boners against us
If we must impale aliens on our dicks, just so we can get this much closer to free Earth, then be it!
So I just got a council mission on Long War that crashes to desktop anytime I try to play the mission. It loads, I can see all my squad and then it just crashes. Any ideas?

this is actually a horrifying scenario. death by snoo snoo
This looks like the tutorial mission, I doubt regular missions will be as "cinematic"
Compare EW's tutorial mission to the rest of the game
He admitted openly it was scripted and to show off the stuff in the limited time, namely aliens won't assblast you the same turn they get dropped off and snake ladies can't shag you on the same turn they pull you in with their tongue.
Generally it seemed to really happen outside of the usual turn rhythm, just don't pay attention to that.
Hopefully it's a sign that XCOM2 will be more balanced than EU and EW.
Hopefully it's a sign that XCOM2 will be more balanced than EU and EW.
It will have it's own version of thin mint gunslinging sniper spam, don't you worry. If not, someone'll mod it in :v:
So are the sectoids, mutons, etc capable of individual thought or are they all mindless dregs?
Mutons perhaps more so than Sectoids;
Though possessed of a certain… brilliance… they are marred by their cowardice and frailty… which made them cruel… and ultimately useless.
And Mutons;
-- incapable of brilliance, of independence… they will never be more than primitive warriors… serving only to fight, and die, as did those who came before them.

Back when the reveal trailer went up they said that you wouldn't be able to instantly kill the Evolved Sectoid with one melee attack like what happens in the trailer, so I think it was one of those things that was changed to make the gameplay more exciting.

Haven't seen E3 gameplay or anything yet, but I'm guessing the melee weapon can 1-shot kill some enemies, even tougher ones. Y'know, the occasional critical strikes?
[editline]16th June 2015[/editline]
Okay. That was probably some early footage which they showed at IGN. Cuz it was not bad, but not great either.
For example, the units don't seem to be correctly placed behind cover, just a visual thing. The environment seems almost too clean, like free of any details.. details which they surely didn't lack in EU/EW. Camera and unit movement didn't feel so smooth either.
Other than that, cool death animations, cool enemies, a pretty cool new "Stealth" mode which apparently greatly reduces the enemy detection range for setting up ambushes easily? Overwatch fixed as well.

How does an unconditional instant kill make anything more exciting? It should be about chance, and the trooper's ability to use it. It could leave the Evolved Sectoid maimed? Would be tad more exciting.

Finally, done. I originally though this achievement was gonna be a real pain in the ass, but it actually wasn't that bad.
I worried about stealth. One of the important parts of EU was restraint. You couldn't just barrel through the level, dashing up to half cover, because you could activate units and be shit out of luck. With stealth though, it looks like not only is their detection radius pretty damn small, but you can also see it from a really long distance away. Seems like there's no risk involved in running around the map in stealth, which would kind of kill all the tension that EU had.
